Title: How is ISIS getting weapons and munitions?
Post by Svengali on May 27th, 2015 at 12:35pm
It seems that in a recent battle the Iraqis and their allies ran out of ammunition while ISIS seemed well supplied.

Who is supplying weapons and munitions to ISIS? Where are the supplies coming from? Who is financing it and how are the transactions being made invisible to the international community?

It could only be 3 adjacent countries that are supplying weapons. Jordan, Turkey and Israel while the origin of the weapons is evidently Saudi Arabia.

It must be being done by air at night because road transport and day time flights are too vulnerable.

Separately, Hussein al-Ramahi, who heads the political commission of the Iranian-backed Hezbollah brigades, disclosed that his forces have discovered Saudi-supplied arms and ammunition in areas taken back from ISIS control that have been dropped to ISIS fighters from unidentified aircraft.

“The Iraqi security and popular forces have discovered Saudi-supplied weapons in regions liberated from ISIS control,” Ramahi told FarNews Agency.

“We have discovered boxes containing weapons and equipment with Saudi names and labels on them,” he said.

The allegation of supplying weapons could not be confirmed.

However, it is consistent with a recent report by the London-based Conflict Armament Research Ltd., which did an analysis of weapons and ammunition captured from ISIS forces in Iraq and Syria late last year.

“M79 90 mm anti-tank rockets captured from ISIS forces in Syria are identical to M79 rockets transferred by Saudi Arabia to forces operating under the ‘Free Syrian Army’ umbrella in 2013,” the CAR report said.

Saudi Arabia fingered as one of ISIS weapons suppliers

I have mentioned in earlier posts.  The whole situation is upside down there.  ISIL was formed primarily from anti Syrian forces and also tribes from Iraq.   We have supported the Syrian opposition force, which are allied with ISIL.  In effect, we are funding the ... entire conflict area.  We are funding Syrian opposition forces that supports ISIL, at the same time, we are funding Iraqi and Iranian forces in against ISIL.     On the other hand, we are supporting the Saudis who are finding against rebels backed by Iran, and the Saudis fund the Syrian opposition force who is supporting ISIL against Iraq who we support.

This is complete madness!

Well, the following map of the Sunni/Shia divide, could provide some indications -

As could the following Washington think tank article -
http://www.washingtoninstitute.org/policy-analysis/view/saudi-funding-of-isis

The recent bombing of a Saudi Mosque by ISIS, could be seen as "biting the hand that feeds you"?

http://edition.cnn.com/2015/05/23/middleeast/saudi-arabia-mosque-blast/
Then, the Mosque was Shia, not Sunni and ISIS & Saudi are both primarily Sunni!

But, you must also throw in the other BIG INFLUENCE, which is oil!

Finally, just to clarify things (NOT), there are a few things that MAY cause some confusion in some discussions?
1) Money
2) Politics
3) Religion

There are only 3 places that oil can be going. Jordan, Israel and Turkey which implicates those countries in financing ISIS.

Turkey is helping the Islamic state.

I thought they were just using the fifty thousand tons of armaments the yanks left behind, and then there is the other fifty thousand tons that saddam and assad left lying around.

Will take a while to fire off that lot.  ;D

Yes, ever since they heard of aussie centrelink they have been wondering what in the f#ck is the point of fighting, now they are just employing a rear guard action for as long as it takes to get another Greens / ALP aussie government in power.

You are obviously a specialist and extremely knowledgeable in rear-guard action. Please keep your weapon clean.

I doubt this is a fact, but it could pan out that way. I am willing to vote Green or ALP, but not before they get real.

As to the OP question, my guess is that IS gets its weaponry from anywhere and everywhere. This is not a conventional two state war with troops identifiable by tidy uniforms and front lines. The Islamic Caliphate consists bands of armed civilians with loose allegiances and unpredictable lines of supply.

One source is almost certainly the Wahabists in Saudi Arabia who would love to bring down the house of Saud. The Wahbs have the fanaticism, the money, and the access to sophisticated weapons through moles in the Saudi military.

my guess is they're primarily still surviving on captured weaponry/ammunition. Also they are getting a lot of defectors from Al Nusra and other rival islamists who bring their weapons/ammo with them.

They are also proving themselves to be good improvisors:

It says they are doing relentless suicide bombing,is that the improvising you mentioned your link doesn't say much more.

The link mentions how they rigged captured Humvees and other vehicles to become bombs which the Iraqis claimed destroyed entire blocks. The Iraqi PM claimed it was these devastating explosions that destroyed the Iraqis will to fight.

Their operational prowess must be acknowledged - how did they transfer all those troops and weaponry for the assault across open desert - while all routes are no doubt closely monitored by US air surveillance?

The umbilical chord of supply: could this be the end of ISIS now the discussion has started?

human ingenuity, (whether American or ISIS) is a wonderful thing.
