Title: No ‘shirtfront’ from Tony Abbott on Putin at APEC
Post by athos on Nov 11th, 2014 at 9:59pm
‘No harsh phrasing’: No ‘shirtfront’ yet from Australia PM on Putin at APEC encounter.
Tony Abbott promised it will be different in his home town Brisbane.

Russian President Vladimir Putin speaks with Australia's Prime Minister Tony Abbott before the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit plenary session at the International Convention Center in Beijing on November 11, 2014 without ‘shirtfront’ action.
Some think Tony Abbott will fulfill his ‘shirtfront’ promise in his home town Brisbane during G20 summit , probably with the help of Australian police.

The Russian and Australian leaders have discussed the crash of Malaysian Airlines MH17 on the sidelines of the APEC summit in China. Despite a previous promise to act tough, PM Abbott has abstained from physical force against President Putin.

“The leaders have quite resolutely called for a genuine investigation of the causes of the catastrophe [of the MH17 flight], Putin’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov told journalists.

MH17 was shot down over eastern Ukraine, claiming lives of everyone on board, 298 passengers and crew, among them 36 Australian residents. Abbott has stated on more than one occasion that in his opinion that Malaysian Boeing was shot down by pro-Russian rebels in Ukraine’s Donetsk Region.

Peskov said that both leaders have spoken in favor of speeding up the investigation process and condemned the situation when experts are unable to get to the crash site because “Ukrainian [government] units are shelling the site.”

In the course of the conversation President Putin stressed that Russia has always insisted on “an unbiased, quick and effective investigation,” Peskov told journalists.

Ahead of the upcoming APEC summit, the Australian PM made a controversial statement about dealing with Putin in a rough way once they meet.

“I am going to shirtfront Mr. Putin – you bet I am – I am going to be saying to Mr. Putin ‘Australians were murdered. They were murdered by Russian-backed rebels,’” Abbott said at the time of his supreme self confidence.

According to journalists at the event, Putin didn't have time for Tony Abbot and walked away chatting with much more important Chinese President Xi Jinping after the picture, leaving Mr Abbott in his wake.
Sadly, there was no shirt-front, but there were a heck of a lot of Star Trek references.

In accordance with international media Tony Abbott had only chance to say to the Putin:
"Nice weather Mr. President, isn't it".
Putin didn't reply at all because he was busy talking to other much more important officials.

Next day all Australian media reported how Tony Abbott demanded from Russia apology, compensation etc.???????? For what?????.
Let's see what's gonna happen in Tony's home town Brisbane.

Putin’s shawl chivalry gets blanket coverage from Western media.
Russia's President Vladimir Putin (R) helps put a blanket on Peng Liyuan, wife of China's President Xi Jinping at National Aquatics Center.

I think by the moral standards being applied here, the President of Iran has the right to go full-blown biffo on the US President - for actually shooting down one of their civilian airlines - directly, killing hundreds of men women and children.

I suspect that you really wanted to see a good shirt lifting -  a full on charge at high speed.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Considering the two individuals involved, I'm surprised it didn't happen.

Putin was given the cold shoulder by everyone. This gimlet-eyed throwback to the soviet era felt not the slightest warmth towards him, and so he took his leave a day early.

Maybe that's why he put that blanket on Peng Liyuan -- he didn't want her to get cold shoulders.

Actually I suspect that one of those koalas was trained to rip off Vlad's shirtfront but I think the chlamydia kicked in and ruined the black op.  Well at least a yellow stain is something.

I didn't see that. I missed it.

But apparently Putin ate alone; was shunted to the end of the photo-op line-up; was given a tongue-lashing by Canada's PM; was pood on by a koala; was eye-balled by Abbott; and was generally made to feel like Hannibal Lecter at a vegetarians convention.

For which he has been lauded in the Russian Press, and that is all which counts for/to him.

Hahaha I love it. But I'd love it more if he didn't have warships parked outside Brisbane.

They were only there to monitor the private satellite conversations between the leaders and their governments at home.

Nothing to see here, folks.

You can bet their hotel rooms were bugged like a termite invasion behind the walls and in the air-conditioning ducts.

Korrection: "lauded in the State-kontrolled press".

A few months ago there were riots all across Mother Russia with demands to get rid of this dinosaur of the Soviet era.

A quick google found lots of links.  Abbott would 'sell his arse' to have Putin's level of support among the people.

Link.
