Title: Stupid short-sighted ignorant
Post by Emma Peel on Nov 9th, 2014 at 7:49pm
So

talking about the way we have ignored some huge natural resources..  here on this continent. !!
What is even better about them is that they are  imports !!
Why is this I wonder.??

Because they don't get dug of the ground... by big business?  So govt can make big bikkies..?
OK  I am talking CAMELS  .. primarily.. but also there is no reason to ignore feral pigs and Buffalo

I have raised this opportunity before on this forum some time ago...

WE MUST utilise heretofore ( :)) unacknowlegded resources...  not the stuff of the earth but the cream///

Saw an interesting show about camel milk,  and its benefits.. not to mention the Camel Cult in Arabia...  WHY the F? aren't we benefiting from this rich trade.. whilst controlling feral creatures on the land.

The program covered  a bit of interesting information..  about the benefits of Camels milk...

worth $$ per ltre ..
not to mention the value of our disease free wild stock.. the best camels in the world.
(DO you Know why we have camels..??)

and the spokesperson pointed out ,  quite correctly imo.. the stupidity of the Aus govt for failing to recognise these major benefits.

TOTALLY AGREE  .. it was on 7 Sunday night..

I always wondered how it was possible for the Bedouin and related tribes to survive as they did in such harsh conditions, in the deserts of the Middle East.  Always always wondered how it was possible..

I think it may have been Lawrence of Arabia..  both the man and the movie..in that order, -  that first made me wonder ...

Now it becomes clear..  or clearer..  at least.  No amount of trade could really explain it..

Im  pretty sure we export camels and water buffalos so whats the issue?

There may be a few more things involved there Emma.

The population density in 'surviving in a desert' might be different to the economics of 'producing camel milk.'

But if the experts have it wrong, you are entirely free to buy camels, graze and milk them.

spare me sprinter..that is so simplistic a reply..

Ian..??  the scale is the issue. Making the most of these pests is the point. Obviously we do not do anything LIKE we could, in the way of economic inflows. Is that clear?
We MUST do more, rather than cull them.  Watch the program... it was very interesting.

Gawd talk about misdirection...  I suggested that camels milk may well be very worthy of our consideration on economic and export basis, and you talk about pops living in a desert.?   WE DONT YET
entirely live in desert...  because we all live on the coastal fringe .. mostly/ so  what about it.??  TOO HARD??  for a city/surfer/ocean guy??

LOOK at it before you pan it Sprinter.

Camels have been milked for many a year. Why camel milk is not a commercial thing other than a boutique business is due to yield.

There is a camel dairy only about 5km away from where I live.
I had a chat with the owner and he is very upbeat about his product, I think he is only surviving by having a tourist operation in tandem with the dairy side of the business.

As far as harvesting wild camels goes its a hard gig.

You have to go to remote places with no infrastructure, sort out the logistics and pray some drongo greenee does not start a save the camel campaign against you.

There are easier ways to make money.

At this point of time, beef, pork and lamb are just too cheap to make camel meat  worthwhile .

Not talking about Camel MEAT., :-?  Miketrees. ?

A dairy does not produce MEAT.( not primarily)
Huh?

No  I'm not talking about camel MEAT.  MEAT = DEAD.

Camel MILK  =  sustainable on-going yield.

Do YOU UNDERSTAND.??

I've never see a Greenie stand and watch camels die of thirst, they instead stay with the aircon on and saying its the natural selection process at work, and tough titty too many camels destroy the watering place for so many other fauna!

I would prefer a greenie shoot the camel as a feral species. If there is a demand for the meat or for breeding that can be done within fences.

Having said that I have had a think.  If there is no value in a wild unfenced camel no one will hunt them and they will be uncontrolled unless govt decides to kill them all, which of course will cost the tax payer.  Meanwhile there are business which use camels.  Nothing is ever easy and if you have an easy solution you probably don't understand the problem.

Seems to me a partnership with aboriginals tracking and hunting and some scale of subsidy that means that every camel is worth a motza, if we can drive rhinos and elephants into extinction, then the same can be done for camels in the outback.

Not like the aboriginals, custodians of the land and all that,  have not driven other large species into extinction.  8-)

Not picking on aboriginals bozo, identifying one of the few commercial enterprises that they can engage in that actually pays money and is not sucking at the tax payers teat.

Camel dairy has a very limited demand, and will make very little use of the feral population.
Camels have to be domesticated and trained to give milk.

Yes trained they will give you nothing unless trained.

From what I read in our paper yesterday, they give very little milk, compared to dairy cows, which is why the milk is expensive. The costs would be about the same.

Then of course at that price, $25per litre, you have to have a dedicated market. The size of your market has to determine the size of your investment.

One camel for a Bedouin family to milk is ok. They generally don't have refrigeration, Weetbix etc. So their consumption would generally be much less than Western society.

OK, then try this link.
http://www.australian-information-stories.com/camels-in-australia.html

"Australian Camels are now exported live to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and other countries where disease free Camels are considered a delicacy.

Australian Camels are also exported to Arab Camel racing stables as breeding stock.

The United States also impots them to use in tourist venues.

There are over 40 Farms providing rides and Safari Treks operating in Australia now.

Australia is home to the only wild herds of Dromedary Camels in the world"

As for the Buffalo:
"During the 1950s, buffalo were hunted for their skins and meat, which was exported and used in the local trade. In the late 1970s, live exports were made to Cuba and continued later into other countries. Buffalo are now crossed with riverine buffalo in artificial breeding (AI) programs, and may be found in many areas of Australia. Some of these crossbreds are used for milk production. Melville Island is a popular hunting location, where a steady population of up to 4,000 individuals exist. Safari outfits are run out of Darwin to Melville Island and other locations in the Top End, often with the use of bush pilots. The horns, which can measure up to a record of 3.1 m (10 ft) tip-to-tip, are prized hunting trophies.[30]

The buffalo have developed a different appearance from the Indonesian buffalo from which they descend.[citation needed] They live mainly in freshwater marshes and billabongs, and their territory range can be quite expansive during the wet season. Their only natural predators in Australia are large adult saltwater crocodiles, with whom they share the billabongs, and dingoes, which have been known to prey on buffalo calves and occasionally adult buffalos when the dingoes are in large packs.[citation needed]

Buffalos were exported live to Indonesia until 2011, at a rate of about 3000 per year. After the live export ban that year, the exports dropped to zero, and had not resumed as of June 2013.[31]"

well it seems this (CACIA) is failing bigtime to take advantage of what is elsewhere, and could become here in Australia a very lucrative business...  for several reasons..
it seems from anecdotal information that there are very BIG health benefits to do with consuming Camel MILK.

For many members of our society. The current price internationally is to do with supply and demand.  Get it..?

Anyone with a bit of nouse and entrepreneurial drive,  and the money and time,  could create an on-going hugely profitable industry out of this.  Why not??  we breed and milk cows, goats, sheep, ..  why NOT..?  when their output has so much VALUE.??

culling Camels for meat is a waste..

and lets get back on track... the benefits of such an industry here are multitude.

Got the brains?? work it out.

I am just sorry I'm too old and poor to take it up as an enterprise.  :)

Who are you getting cranky with EP?

If consumers want the milk and will pay for it some one will produce it.

I myself don't want camel milk.

Perhaps kangaroo milk, pre shaken is more my style.

You don't say whether that is for milk powder, or fresh milk.

Yesterday you were quoting prices for powdered milk.

1kg of powder makes about 7 litres of milk. Powder is lighter, takes less room and doesn't require refrigeration; although there is the manufacture cost of powder from the raw product.

Even then if you are quoting fresh milk, delivery has to be factored into price. That is if they deliver fresh to Australia.

Australian prices have to factor in the higher wages and other costs of Australia over India.

Yes, I understand that. The Queensland story was about fresh milk, not powdered.

Your most recent post is about powdered. Powdered milk is cheaper than fresh milk.

That is why I was asking the questions. Just to confirm whether we were talking about the same products or related products.

So to continue the theme.

What about the approval of the giant Indian backed coal plan which will decimate the Great Barrier Reef.?

Why is it so worthy that so much money has been spent on propaganda lying about how both the QLD and Australian govts CARE for the reef.?

What about the deaths of innocents in our Govt run detention camps?

What about govt programs which incarcerate and torture our original peoples.?

THINK ABOUT IT.
The above are just a few of the actions which impinge this Abbott government and show it  as the most harmful government Australia has ever had.
