Thirroul fruit shop pays teen $3.26 'training fee'

A 17-year-old girl is seeking to be paid wages for hours spent in "training sessions" at a Thirroul fruit shop.      :-?

Lauren Moon worked 24.5 hours over a nine-day period at Fancy Fruits in Thirroul Plaza in May and was paid just $3.26 an hour for her efforts. Miss Moon said she was handed $80 in cash, but instead she should have been paid $330.26 or $13.48 an hour.      :(

The teenager has written to the owners of the business demanding she be paid $250.26 in outstanding wages. She has also lodged a complaint with the Fair Works Ombudsman.

Miss Moon said she had received no response to the letter she sent to Fancy Fruits on May 26.

It's becoming a very common problem now.

I know of young people being paid just $50 a day.

Fight back against Abbott’s anti-worker laws ramps up

ACTU President Ged Kearney said everyday Australian workers can’t afford Tony Abbott’s plan to cut their wages and conditions.

“The Abbott Government is determined to deliver what business and employers want, and swing the pendulum back to them,” Ms Kearney said.

“This means more insecurity at work and less rights at work.

“If three out of the eight Senate crossbenchers vote against the Fair Work Amendment Bill - Tony Abbott's attacks on workers will be defeated.

“That’s why we are appealing to all of the crossbench Senators to stand with Australian workers to protect their rights at work.”

Tony Abbott proposed new laws under the Fair Work Amendment Bill will:

• Strip protections for workers on individual contracts to cut wages and penalty rates
• Allow workers to be paid with something other than money
• Make it easier for a boss to rip you workers by having them sign away their right to compensation.
• Take away workers’ right to strike by allowing bosses to veto industrial action
• Gives mining and construction employers a special deal to write their own Enterprise Agreements.
• Make it harder for workers to access and be supported by their union at work.

Ms Kearney said the Abbott Government has a clear agenda to strip away workplace rights, wage and conditions from everyday Australians.

“The Government is starting with the Fair Work Amendment Bill in the Senate before it launches a Productivity Commission review of workplace laws with terms of reference that may as well have been written by big business,” Ms Kearney said.

“Tony Abbott and the Coalition Government can repeat their mantra of workplace reform being ‘evolution not revolution’ - but no one should be fooled. This is the first step of the Coalition’s agenda to strip away worker’s rights and wages.

“Whatever the Government calls it and however they plan to do it, the end result is still the same – workers will be worse off under the Government’s anti-worker agenda.”

It is ILLEGAL

They KNOW it is illegal

But they will "try it on" for as long as they think they can get away with it
And quick to plead ignorance - when they get "busted"




Coco Cubano workers told 'training' would be unpaid

A new restaurant due to open in GPT's CBD shopping centre expansion has been caught out trying to avoid paying workers while they are being trained.

New employees at the Coco Cubano restaurant franchise were recently told they were to work for free for up to five "training" shifts.

They were sent a letter which said they would be required to go to the Coco Cubano franchise at Macarthur Square, Campbelltown, for the training shifts.

"This training will be unpaid however we will provide transport and a meal for you," the letter to the trainees read.

A list of the available shifts included two where the Wollongong store employees would run the Macarthur Square store on their own.

When the Mercury contacted a representative of the Wollongong franchise on Wednesday, they said the employees would be rewarded with transport and a meal.

However, several hours later, the representative called back to thank the Mercury "for bringing that to our attention" and to state the employees would be paid for their training shifts.

"They are all getting paid and they will be getting paid in the next few days - by the end of this week or the beginning of next week," the representative said.

A spokesman for the Fair Work Ombudsman said not paying employees being trained was unlawful.

"It's the Fair Work Ombudsman's view that employees must be paid for all hours worked, including trial shifts or probation periods, meetings, training and extra time spent opening or closing a business," the spokesman said.

I think I will wait until I see some actual detail and some discussion by commentators a little less biased and hysterical than the unions!
