Here's What We Learnt From The 60 Minutes Interview With 'Slippergate' Whistleblower James Ashby

...Ashby claims Christopher Pyne, then in opposition and now education minister, promised to organise a lawyer and job in state politics for him after he raised the harassment claims...

We knew Pyne was corrupt Cods, but we did not know the seriousness of it until this whistleblower has come forward:

Quote:
...Federal Education Minister Christopher Pyne allegedly offered to help find former speaker's aide James Ashby a lawyer and a job if he made a claim of sexual harassment against speaker of the House of Representatives Peter Slipper...

...Journalist Liz Hayes: "You'd been, according to you, assured by Christopher Pyne that you would have a job and you would have a solicitor who would be paid for."

James Ashby: "That's right …

As are some hard right posters !

Pyne is an ugly little man who used a fool to help bring down the government. Ashby deserves what he got and would have known exactly what Pyne and Brough wanted from him.

I doubt anyone will believe Pyne's denial, but then what he did isn't a hanging offence, but just dirty tactics. We know that the Coalition will stop at nothing to get what they want even if it means destroying people in the process.

Gillard's sacking of Harry Jenkins as Speaker and installing of Slipper to shore up her shaky numbers wasn't a "dirty tactic"?

Any government would have done the same under the circumstances. The tactics would have seemed dirty to the opposition at the time, but then they resorted to even dirtier tactics to get rid of Slipper. They destroyed him.

Not defending Pyne but what's the evidence?

The complainant made (apparently) timely notes of a meeting with Pyne. Pyne, no doubt, made none.

Senior politicians don't get to where they are and stay there by making questionable promises that can be proved by a disgruntled complainant.

So, if you believe Ashby its because you want to believe him, not because the evidence supports his claim.

What you could say is that 60 Minutes  stopped at nothing to get what they want even if it meant destroying naive and vulnerable people in the process.

He would have been paid by 60 minutes. Ashby obviously loves the attention. If he really was as suicidal as he claims - he wouldn't be trying to keep the story alive.

Unlikely he would sue... But it demonstrates that its not just politicians who could be accused of not playing a straight game...

Some 'Ordinary' citizens believe they can make wild, emotional allegations while holding politicians to standards they couldn't and wouldn't meet themselves... That's not to say we shouldn't hold politicians to a higher standard... But we should at least try to measure ourselves by the same standards.

I think the take home message is...

Don't use amateur tactics to beat professionals at their own game... The reason the David and Goliath story is so enduring is because its exceptional.

Ashby thought he could take on the political and legal forces of a major political party with a notebook and some lurid stories.

Ashby admitted he had been warned, but he is such a greedy opportunist that when the big boys paid him a little attention, he wanted to believe what they said and please them. He loved the intrigue obviously.

Actually out of the whole scenario - I feel sorry for Slipper. He'd got too comfortable in his job, but he didn't deserve his punishment. Abbott and his mates have done worse when it comes to rorting the taxpayer. Same goes for a few Labor MP's.

Did he report it immediately or did he wait, to see if he could benefit from this 'corruption'?

Ashby said in court there were no such promises made.....sounds like they all deserve each other.

This whole thing has been a massive waste of time and effort. As is the Pink Batts inquest and probably the Union "slush fund" case.

Former parliamentary staffer James Ashby has dropped legal action against former speaker Peter Slipper.

Ashby drop the court case against Slipper because Ashby says that Slipper is "mentally unwell"

Quote:
In his statement, Mr Ashby also cited reports that Mr Slipper has been "mentally unwell" as a further consideration in his decision.

"Under such circumstances, I do not wish to continue lengthy proceedings that could potentially cause him great harm," Mr Ashby said.

It would be nice to know who put the pressure on Ashby to drop the court case.

If you are taking someone to court the last thing you worry about is their mentally health.

I don't think it would be the lawyers that told Ashby to drop the case as they would like a verdict in their favour to get the cost back that they already spent on the first court case and the appeal. So who else would like the court case to be drop and why?

They way it always looked was that Pyne, Brought and up to the top of the Lieberal food chain were all involved, Now there is confirmation from inside that this was in fact what had happened.

Yep maybe there were no good guys involved at all.

Ashby, Slipper, Brough, Pyne, Abbott etc.

Can't see this one going anywhere. They very rarely do.

I was listening to the god botherer show on ABC last night and someone was saying that in regard to corruption with the Labor party, it's usually about personal gain, but corruption within the Liberal party is usually about them acting like the rules and laws don't apply to them - but for the advancement of their political cause - not personal gain.

Seems to be kind of true.

his mum and dad knew he was being used or taken for a ride...$160.000 a year with no experience...

how gullible can you get?

That's right, dear. James Ashby was being taken for a ride all the way to a safe seat in state government.

The ALP reward trusted union officials with such prizes. The Libs, it seems, reward those who do its dirty work. Who knows? Maybe Pyne got his seat the same way. Maybe even Mr Abbott himself.

It does make you wonder what the lovechild of John Howard and Bronwyn Bishop had on John Howard.

Thank heavens the grown-ups are back in charge.

That's right, Progressives. A senior Lib bribing a staffer to "out" the Speaker of the House in return for Liberal preselection is hardly news.

Happens all the time.

Well, these kind of things does happen in politics, it is a ruthless world.   The man was promised free legal representation and a job, and at  the end he had none, and everyone assumed that he was acting under direction anyway.  So his reputation is ruined, no other employers would want to touch him within a mile.  Of course, he is going to come back and bite as he can.  But, what he does only served to confuse the situation, with little benefit to him, and even less effect on current sitting member of the government as these 'allegations' can never be proven.

I agree that he dropped the court case, and its certainly not out of worry about Slipper's mental health, since he did not worry about it when he first lodge the case.

But, I do believe, that its his lawyers - said to be acting on behalf of some individual / party advised him to drop the case probably because they would not get paid if they continue on with it.

Cwissy reckons Ashby must have misunderstood him. ;D  That's as much of an admission as we'll ever get from the poodle.

I guess Ashby needs to ask himself, if he wants to play with the big boys at the high table, does he really have a few big chips to bring into the game?

After a torrid presser Cwissy Payne flew off for “urgent appointments” in Laos and China.

Abbott desperately trying to draw a line under it.

This has legs.

Also, in TURC, emails between Peta & a developer had a suppression order lifted—ICAC is now in Abbott’s office!

Yes - we've got on hell of a lot to learn from the education systems in Laos and China...

"Numbah One children strong courage patriots now repeat in democratic unison heavenly learning for today as way forward in comradely future of five year learning plan!  Tomorrow self criticism and spiritual cleansing and purification of thought and acceptance ways of decadent West and learning capital roading in socialist brotherhood!"

Guess who knew all about and covered up for Slippers miss adventures for well over a decade previously and just kept on pre selecting him for office as a liberal minister with their full support - time after time after time ?

The Libs had made Slipper :

Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister (John Howard) and government whip.

Well, well... Did Ashby secretly record the conversation... Or does Pyne suspect he may have?

Not that Ashby could use it legally... But, if he has, it would sure put the shivers up the recorded party.

legality is irrelevant ... if Ashby had a recording Pyne would be finished in politics. The only one to still vote for him would be Cods, longy and armpit

True, but only if Ashby releases it (if it even exists) and is prepared to risk prosecution.

If the Coalition even suspected Ashby had a tape, he would probably have met with a fatal accident by now.

Are you suggesting the Coalition is the Mafia and would commit an act of murder?
