Mike Carlton is getting older and some people do get bitter as they age. Nonetheless he is an honest writer and isn't scared of confrontation. There are a lot of people who agree with him and I doubt he'll be out of work for long.

Actually thats not what Carlton did. He didnt start the abuse. He wrote a column and then was abused on Twitter by people who disagreeed with him. He didnt abuse them at first, but when this was still going after a week, then he bit back.

I agree with you on this Cods. The only explanation I can give is that the Coalition of the Willing has had to retreat simply because they got involved in Iraq for the wrong reasons. It's gone from bad to worse.

I wish Australia had a national service scheme for when students have finished high school. If its done properly you wont see young people so heavily involved in drugs and partying and committing crime. We have had a National Service schemes in the past.  They have invariably been abandoned, perceived as a waste of time and money.  The conscripts invariably ended up painting rocks, mowing lawns and doing gardening, unless sent off to fight in foreign wars (a'la Vietnam).  The Military itself saw them as detrimental to the defence needs of the nation and diluting their ability to actually carry it out.   The only time the Australian public has accepted conscription in Australia has been when there has been a clearly existential threat to the nation.

Further, as we are a democracy, the very concept of conscription runs counter to our national belief in democracy and freedom.  Also, why should parents abrogate their parental responsibility to the State?  It would be better that they do their jobs as parents properly and turn out well rounded, tolerant and fair and well behaved citizens.    ::)

My opinion on child soldiers?

I consider it an abhorrence. Is that succinct enough?

Now, I suppose, we get down to the definition of what, exactly, defines a 'child soldier'.

So, please allow me to put a little personal spin on this particular issue. I, fortunately, missed the Vietnam fracas by a mere eighteen months and was under no illusions as to what lay in front of me while contemplating the possibility of conscription. Was I a 'child' at that time? According to the Government of the time, I was not. And given my personal relationships with some who had served in that theatre, I continue to count myself fortunate indeed.

The comparisons you offer between cadets and what is probably a forcibly conscripted member of an African kill-squad has little relevance to the discussion at hand. You may see little difference but I surely do.

You see, I don't have an issue with the Israelis conscripting their young men and women, because I am aware of the fate awaiting the inhabitants of Israel if they don't maintain a state of constant awareness and preparedness.
