UN shelter in Gaza shelled, killing at least 15

A UN shelter in northern Gaza was shelled on Thursday, causing "multiple deaths and injuries," according to a spokesman for the UN refugee agency.

At least 15 people were killed and scores hurt when a school compound in Beit Hanoun, designated as a haven for the displaced, was bombarded by Israeli forces amid heavy fighting with Palestinian militants, a Gaza health official said.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed his horror at the attack on the school.

"Many have been killed - including women and children, as well as UN staff," he said in a statement. "...I strongly condemn this act."

Chris Gunness, a spokesman for the UN Refugee and Works Agency, or UNRWA, tweeted that the precise coordinates of the shelter had been relayed to Israeli forces...

..Pools of blood lay on the ground and on students' desks in the courtyard of the school near the apparent impact mark of the shell, according to a Reuters photographer at the scene.

Scores of crying families who had been living in the school ran with their children to a hospital where the victims were being treated a few hundred metres away. Laila Al-Shinbari, a woman who was at the school when it was shelled, told Reuters that families had gathered in the courtyard expecting to be evacuated shortly in a Red Cross convoy.

"All of us sat in one place when suddenly four shells landed on our heads ... Bodies were on the ground, (there was) blood and screams. My son is dead and all my relatives are wounded including my other kids," she wept.

Ashraf al-Qidra, spokesman for the Gaza Health Ministry, said that as well as the 15 dead, another 200 people had been wounded in the attack. The director of a local hospital said various medical centres around Beit Hanoun were receiving the wounded.

A cease-fire accord remains elusive despite intense diplomatic efforts.

I was watching Al Jazeera last night.

That item - 'Bombs hit UN School' - was covered in one of its reports.

It was reported - on Al Jazeera last night - that the Israelis were contacted for a response, and the Israelis claim that they can identity the rocket types [by frequency monitoring, of the rocket engines?].

And the Israelis responded, reportedly, that the rocket that hit the school was likely a Hamas rocket that 'fell short' or malfunctioned.

That's what ya get, for using cheap Iranian equipment! :)

I totally agree.

They've actually been warning civilians to clear an area before firing rockets there ... a nice consideration that Hamas never extended to the Israelis.

And I haven't been hearing or reading any international outrage about Hamas firing rockets and storing their weapons of war in amongst the civilian population. Selective ignorance.

Just journalists with leftwing agendas running around getting pictures of Palestinian child-casualties with the aim of propagandising against the Israelis.

Israel has killed some 700 Palestinians in its latest offensive in Gaza. Every death is a tragedy, especially those of children. Some of the pictures coming out of the war zone are brutal, distressing and heartbreaking. God weeps at the suffering. If He has meaning and purpose in the pain, it is lost to the world's baffled intellects.

But it is a curious that Israel should be constantly singled out for special treatment.

After all, the Palestinians have suffered far greater atrocities at the hands of their Arab brothers and co-religionists. Hundreds of thousands have been displaced; tens of thousands terrorised, persecuted and ethnically cleansed; and many hundreds summarily slaughtered.

But the Arab League has been mute. There have been no resolutions adopted by the UN Security Council or by the General Assembly. Not a word is heard from the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees or any of its special committee dedicated investigating Israeli transgressions. And not a peep from the Special Rapporteur of the Commission on Human Rights.

All remain silent.

Of the 1991 Kuwaiti mass expulsion of 300,000 Palestinians, one observer lamented: "You can call it deportation... But I call it the third catastrophe after 1948 and 1967. Imagine what would happen if Israel deported 300,000 people. The whole world would be up in arms. But when an Arab deports or kills his Arab brother, it's all right; nothing happens."

And those who dare to speak up for Israelis or defend Netanyahu's actions are subject to all manner of verbal or physical abuse.

Wrong on both counts. England DID have the 'right to promise Palestine' to anyone, but they only offered it to the Arabs and the Jews (about 50/50 split). The Jews said yes, the Arabs said no.

And Great Britain's connection to Palestine was that the League of Nations assigned them the role of administrators for that area, just as France was assigned to manage other areas of the Middle East.

It's probably time the US launched a military operation to occupy Gaza and the other Palestinian territories to do an 'Iraq' and 'Afghanistan' on them.

And then leave NATO forces there on a permanent basis to keep it de-militarised and docile.

I really don't understand these people. They must know that the Israelis have them out-gunned and are quite determined, now that they have begun a ground operation, to destroy the vast underground tunnel system which has been built specifically to enable terrorist attacks inside Israel's borders.

I don't believe that Israel will withdraw from Gaza until either the tunnels are destroyed and/or Hamas has been effectively neutralised. What this translates to in terms of casualties is anybody's guess.

Truce after truce has been violated, yet Hamas still cries foul and pushes for outside intervention in a conflict that they themselves have initiated.

Those that condemn the actions of Israel, and there are plenty of them, should ask themselves:

'Would you tolerate sustained, targeted rocket attacks upon your own civilian population, concerted efforts to violate your country's borders in order to carry out terrorist actions within your country and the rejection of multiple offers of a negotiated peace.'

Somehow I don't think so.

A hundred times more Muslims are killed by other Muslims just i9n Syria, not counting the rest of the Middle East.

But you don't see protests on the streets of western cities about that.

The number includes 21,162 rebels, including 326 foreign fighters, but does not include members of the government security forces or pro-government foreign combatants who have died.
856 foreign civilians who have died in the conflict are also included in the toll, most of them, 684, being Palestinians.
