Labor only leads 54-46 in Victoria.

It is normal for polls to tighten as elections draw nearer.

But Labor are still cruising toward victory.

If Labor wins in Victoria, what difference does it make?
It's traditionally a Labor-voting state, though this can be expected to change over time as manufacturing increasingly disappears.
All it will mean is that some union officials will be able to get their hands on jobs that have been very scarce for them recently. That will be nice won't it.

The road is actually a good idea. The problem is that governments have been cowed by activists into building too much of it underground. This makes the whole thing uneconomical.

Jeff Kennett tried to build a sensible rod there but his attempt was blocked by the 'save Fitzroy pool' mob.

Better a Labor Government block the whole thing than to waste so much money on tunnels.

That is a very substantial and unexpected poll shift which aligns to expectations of Libs improving due to the MH17 incident.

The next federal opinion polls may show the same kind of movement and given Abbott back the lead.

It will be interesting to see how obstructionist labor and PUP will be when a DD is back on the agenda because Abbott would clearly win!

Your understanding of opinion polls is zero. Your post confirms it. You seem to inhabit a world where the margin of error does not exist.

The "substantial" poll shift was coming off a high base because the last poll was somewhat skewed towards Labor. In a poll climate where the typical Victorian poll is 54-46, the 59-41 result of the previous Nielsen poll is clearly an outlier. Comparisons with outliers are largely meaningless.

Also, as a further demonstration of your total lack of ability to grasp the facts, you're making up rubbish about this poll being able to be extrapolated to Federal voting intention for the country as a whole. Really? The sample size for the rest of the country in this poll is zero and the poll respondents were NOT asked questions on Federal voting intention, therefore your extrapolation is of absolutely no value.

Accept that Victoria has a Coalition Government presently, and many in the past including the Kennett and Bolte Governments.

If anything, the electorate has become more conservative with the rise of fundamentalist fanatical anti-abortion evangelical mega-churches establishing themselves in the southeast of the capital. Geoff Shaw, a prime example, was even elected MP in Frankston - a traditional working-class Labor stronghold.

watch the next one after the nations has had a couple weeks of watching a REAL leader in action. Vic libs got a 7% rise which is mammoth.  if Abbott gets the same federally then he is in front by a comfortable margin.

He cant milk the downing of this aircraft forever. The Coalition will get a boost for a week or two.

Have a bit of a scrap between the ADF and a bunch of Ivans that results in a few KIA on both sides and he might get a month to six weeks out of it.

He might get a sustained point or two if during the election campaign he trots out some MH17 crash images mixed in with a few pics of sweaty diggers in the Ukraine.

The voting public don't have great memories.

such poll boosts for situations like this are always temporary as it was for Bligh in the  QLD floods.  but what might be different here is that Abbott has been regarded by labor and greens and a few others as a diplomacy dud and an embarrassment on the international stage.  There was no justification for it and his performance has been quite the opposite but the public image still remained.  but in the MH17 issue, his superb international performance has been front and centre and unable to deny.  Abbott will come out of this with a permanent boost to his reputation.  His polls might rise by as much as 7% in the short term, but he is likely to keep 2-3% of that in the medium to long term.

Australia likes tough and gusty leadership and always has.  This is what Abbott has shown and the image of him as being lightweight and temporary are now gone forever.

Only time will tell, but I believe Abbott will gain massively from this incident.

Australia likes tough and gusty leadership and always has.  This is what Abbott has shown and the image of him as being lightweight and temporary are now gone forever.

Only time will tell, but I believe Abbott will gain massively from this incident.

Will somebody kindly explain to longliar belief and hope are not the same thing?

Yep...when its all done and dusted and Abbott is still responsible for the 300 billion dollar hole in the budget and his toxic plans to beat up the sick, the poor and the old the masses can once again focus on his incompetence.
Unless Abbott plans on riding into power on the back of the death and misery of others he better come up with a plan B  ;D

I thought the same thing.  laborites demand CBAs for everything and when they want to spend $100B on a network they refuse to do one.

Then when the next poll had figures much like the previous few polls - around the 54-46 mark - you suddenly come out of the woodwork and make grandiose claims about a swing to the Liberals, and the Federal Liberals to boot?

You really need to take some remedial statistics.

Yes, they have been rather a poor government.

How can a party that cannot even govern themselves be fit to govern the state? It was a compelling argument against Federal Labor at the 2013 election, and the same argument against the Victorian Coalition is equally compelling now.

for you even the bleeding obvious is not obvious,

the libs have spent several weeks now on a concerted advertising campaign smeering Daniel Andrews name implying he is corrupt because he was involved with the unions .. that is the obvious reason for the dent in the polls

unfortunately for the libs, it won't be enough, they'll still have their arse handed to them on a platter.

I'd be more inclined to call it the MH17 factor - and Abbott is riding it oh so MAJESTICALLY - to great success in the polls

If only that other "operation" could deliver press conferences on a daily basis ?

Quote:
While MPs of all persuasions dismiss the veracity of opinion polling, Swinburne University state political specialist Brian Costar says they pay more attention than they let on.

“Looking at this week’s figures, it’s fair to say that 59-41 (per cent) poll was an aberration, a rogue poll really,” Professor Costar said.

“The gap of about 54 per cent to Labor, 46 to the Coalition looks pretty accurate and all the commentary has been that it’ll probably tighten further as we get closer to an election, with the Labor party still on trend to win.”

Health, education and public transport are the key three issues that have traditionally dominated state elections and on that note, Labor gets a tick of approval from this week’s opinion poll.

The Age-Nielsen survey found the ALP scored strongly with voter perception in the first two categories although on public transport, sentiment was reasonably even.

Respondents gave the Coalition the tick of approval for law and order, roads and managing the state budget — areas where Ted Baillieu campaigned strongly at the 2010 state election.

Residents shocked after homeless couple, dog, found dead in car near Ballarat

July 26, 2014, 8:23 a.m

A young, homeless couple and their dog have been found dead in their car, apparently killed by a gas heater they were using to keep warm.

Police say the 27-year-old man and 24-year-old woman, both from Ballarat and believed to have been living in the car, were using a butane gas heater to keep the chill away when they died.

Officers found the bodies of the couple and their dog when they checked on the car parked at Smarts Hill Road, near Cardigan, about 9.30pm on Friday.

It is believed the heater may have contributed to their deaths, which the police are treating as accidental.

Paramedics were not called to the scene.

Nearby residents are still reeling from the tragedy.

Sandra Jones, who also lives on Cuthberts Road near the intersection with Finches Road, said it was a terrible event.

"You know people are doing it tough, but sleeping in a car...," Ms Jones said.

Dr Bruce Redman from the Salvation Army said that "unfortunately, this is not an unheard of situation", and that the most common face of homelessness - someone sleeping rough in a park or in the doorway - only made up a small per cent of homeless people.

"The Salvos are finding more and more people who are resorting to live in their cars because of a lack of affordable accommodation options," he said.

"When it's summer, people tend to sleep on the beach or in their cars and no one really notices . But when it's cold, most people expect to have a roof over their heads, somewhere where they can stay warm."

Dr Redman said homelessness in regional cities was becoming a big issue, as people were increasingly leaving major cities like Melbourne in search of work in the country.

"But when they arrive, they find it hard to rent a house without a job or relevant references, and they don't know any one in the area," Dr Redman said.

The young couple's tragic deaths have touched the hearts of Victorians, who have taken to social media to express their sympathy.

"This is absolutely devastating. We need to do better," wrote one user.

Another wrote: "A very sad story. Too many young and out-of-sight Australians are suffering from untold poverty and disadvatange".

Rod Dickson, duty forecaster from the Bureau of Meteorology, said Ballarat had an overnight minimum of 7.6 degrees.

However, wind chill had the air feeling like 4 degrees, he said.
