Claire Falls loves soccer. She also has a visual impairment and uses a cane that she calls Dexter when she is out and about. When she heard that Australia’s Paralympic Football team had lost its entire $175,000 funding she got writing to the Prime Minister with a heartfelt letter.

Tens of thousands of Australians have supported the petition to save the pararoos since it was launched.

Claire’s Letter To The PM

I love playing football and am playing my fourth season this year. I was diagnosed with low vision last year when I was playing with my junior league team. Having low vision for me means that I don’t have any 3 dimensional vision or depth perception. This obviously makes playing the game I love very, very hard.

Yesterday I read the article about the Pararoo’s funding going from $175,000 a year to nothing I couldn’t believe it!

I know that is not a lot of money to go around when it comes to supporting sports. I can see that because professional women in sport still have to work to make ends meet, and I know that there is even less for athletes with a disability. I even know that there is only a very small amount dedicated to blind sports.

Yesterday when I read about the Pararoo’s funding being cut off completely I couldn’t help but be angry and sad and disappointed.

I was upset to listen to the video on the Australian Sports Commission Website about how funding gets divided up, and I it makes me feel angry to think that football should ever be about winning medals or to read that funding was cut off because of the Pararoo’s ranking.

The Socceroo’s world ranking is at 62nd the Matilda’s are 9th, are they going to have there funding axed too? Of course they aren’t there would be a huge outcry!

Since when is sport meant to be about how many medals a team wins? What would happen if every Mum or Dad said to their kid ‘I’m not going to pay your football fees unless you win’?

Now that I have had time to adjust to my low vision it its not so bad but I still have to work ten times as hard as my new teammates to get the same results. For me there is no other option in football that suits my needs other than to play in a mainstream league, But the thing is their are some kids out there that have much bigger limitations than me.

If the Football Federation and the Australian Sports Commission are taking away the money for our countries only Paralympics football team that allows athletes with a disability to play, what hope is there for us kids? What do we have to aim for? What happens to our hero’s? How is that promoting encouragement, respect or inclusion?

My question and challenge for you is, if I can get 175,000 supporters to pledge and provide $1 each will you match it dollar for dollar?

Dear Claire,

Thank you for taking the time to write to me.

One of the most enjoyable things about being Prime Minister is hearing from young people like yourself.

I congratulate you on taking an interest in our system of government.

We are a great country and a great people.

One day it will be the responsibility of you and your generation to lead our country.

It says something positive about you that you were willing to take the time to write and share with me your thoughts about the issues that face our country.

Our democracy truly rests on the idea that every individual counts and everyone can have his or her say on the issues that matter most to them.

Thank you for your correspondence and I send you my best wishes.

The PM’s response sounds mighty familiar.

It’s not the first time the PM has been caught out trying to dodge questions from young people.

I agree John, cutting funding that enables disabled people to participate in a tournament other nations embrace shows opportunity is only offered to people whom are considered worthy.....This Government has shown it does not care about people with disabilities where participation in such events would provide them with pride and achievement otherwise denied to them.....Abbott's response did not address the concerns of this young person and misses the point completely!!!

the question is how much of these fundings are borrowed at interest rates that are crippling this country...sorry I do sympathies...but really its only a game.. I would much rather money went to maybe saving her eyesight..

the cane she is using was also funded it didnt happen overnight...someone was paid to invent it..

I am sorry but as far as I am concerned $175.000pa for soccer is not on...

write to the FIFA they have huge money...

Certainly no low Tony won't stoop to, can't even give a disabled child a straight answer, who can you trust, yeah right.

I wonder if Richard Honan and the Manildra group are still getting their funding from the LNP, those poor billionaires need all the help they can get, just yesterday one turned up to the club in a 2013 and not a 2014 Austin Martin, the sneers from the other members nearly pushed him over the edge.

It gets worse. Apparently Abbott followed little Claire into Tiffany (a clothes store) and waited for Claire to be distracted. He took Dexter and with a cruel laugh he watched from outside the store as Claire bumped into chairs, customers, fixtures and other obstacles. Is there no end to Abbott's vileness?

Defending the dead?...All Abbott is doing is his usual Chicken Little impersonation.
A real statesman would not be using the dead for personal publicity so Abbott is nothing but a slimy grub and this tragedy proves it once and for all.

2 parts

1) This is a long bow.
Abbott wouldn't not have even seen the original letter & the person on his staff tasked with responding didn't even read it as well.
They saw the hand writing or read as far as her age and pressed auto reply.

2) After some of the trivial crap Gillard was taken to task for You shouldn't complain.

and being articulate is hardly the top quality for a leader. other than Whitlam and perhaps keating, our PMs have been pretty ordinary public speakers. the best public speaking president in decades is Obama, but in times of crisis and in dealing with Russia he is weak as.

I would also like to point out the previous government cut funding to sport and left the decision of funding up to the ASC.....It is the ASC that decided disabled sports did not deserve this funding......Abbott has been criticised for his response that failed to address the issues raised in a letter from a constituent.....There are far more cuts to disability support than just sport that shows the most venerable are being ignored by both major parties whilst those whom are better are off are being thrown money to have children and maintain their lifestyle.....This sucks!!!

Labor had committed to a package and not to just remove the price on carbon - there was a second part to the arrangement, it was never a plan for one without the other. even Gillard called it the carbon tax.

She was arguing that it wasn't a tax a month after the election with Alan Jones. She later conceded that it was effectively a tax.

i.e when she agreed with the Greens to implement a fixed carbon price she didn't really believe that it was a tax, when she was interviewed by Jones she didn't believe it was a tax.

Someone had obviously explained to her why it was a tax later, not many people actually understand why it is a tax except for the sustained media campaign insisting that it was. It isn't a tax in the same way that Abbott's suggested carbon tax is a tax - it is very different which is one place the confusion came from. It was never a tax paid by anyone in the general community.

Nobody posting here ever paid one cent of carbon tax, In fact nobody ever paid one cent of carbon tax to the tax office.

It could have and should have been implemented to not be a tax.
