Title: What varieties of fruit do you prefer? Post by bogarde73 on Jun 4th, 2014 at 12:13pm
Apples. Whatever happened to Red Delicious apples? Haven't seen them around for a while. Have all the trees been pulled?
Don't like Fuji much, definitely don't like Pink Lady. Of the varieties that seem to be available these days I prefer Red Gala. |

Red Delicious are still around I see them at Coles regularly but I avoid them because they tend to go floury very quickly. I like Fuji and Sundowner varieties :) |

Ah well, you see I shop at Aldi so haven't seen them. But you're right, they do go floury unless you have them at their peak. Sundowners I don't mind but they tend to be a bit tart. |

I'm a Pink Lady fan of Aldi.
Passionfruit, Mixed Berries on my Ice Cream, Aldi sells a great one. Kiwi Fruits, Watermelon (Sugary Ones, they are hard to find). I haven't seen 1 good banana for a very long time. I love Luscious Peaches, Mango's and Red Plums. Strawberries only from the farms. Can I get all these right now, probably not. Haven't seen a good watermelon in years. |

Love mangoes.
At Hungry Jacks, they have a mango thick shake, and it's yummy (forget about the fattening factor!). $2, can't go wrong. In the mornings, I can't stand to eat breakfast, until about an hour later, after my first cuppa coffee. If I have to go out somewhere, then I take a banana and when the tummy rumbles, it does the trick. I must have looked really uncool, eating a banana going into auto barn looking at reverse cameras for the hubby's vehicle ;D But honestly, what better brekky to grab and eat on the run except for a banana. I love pears also. Lemons are a fave, squeezed in water, makes a nice cleansing drink. |

Before the newer high coloured varieties of red delicious apple came along, (High Early , Richer Red)the red delicious was a pale pink apple.
My father inlaw still has a tree of the old variety and the fruit is fantastic, but only for about 10 days before it goes floury. But for that very short time they are just one of the best apples you can eat. No way you can buy any red delicious apples from a supermarket, they overstore and destroy them. I must preserve that old pink delicious variety I think its quite rare now. Does anyone know what I am talking about here? A tree ripened Granny Smith that has gone yellow and the skin gets oily, they are fantastic to eat as well. You only find them long after harvest where some one has missed them. A Sundowner tree ripened and picked in July, fantastic aromatic apple flavours with an agreeable sugar acid ballance. Red Delicious BTW have quite low sugar, its just that they taste sweet because there in very little acid in them. A Lady Williams has about the highest sugar, yet tastes like a battery when you eat it straight from the tree. |

Tomatoes. Yes I am sure they are classified as a fruit.
To get a decent tomato you have to go to home grown heritage varieties. Favourities - Rouge de Marmande (otherwise known as crinkly tomatoes), Black Russian (blackish skin but delicious inside, steady there sunshine), Tommy Toe (I think that's the name). |

Pretty sure most tomatoes you buy at shops are classified as bags of water, not fruit.
