Title: Pseudo climate science gatekeeping reveals fraud
Post by progressiveslol on May 17th, 2014 at 11:13am
With the rejection of a paper that
Quote:
May be harmful
to the pseudo climate science, it has revealed that there is no concern at all because models and reality should not be compared.

Therefore, we can go on reality and ignore the fairyland of climate models and even more so these days, the reality is, is that the raw data is being homogenised into a fraudulent cool the past and warm the present debacle.

There is no global warming. Thanks goes to the climate change community for clarifying it.

Looks like these pseudo climate scientists are falling apart as they get exposed for the bullying, hiding real science.

Yep, world famous climate scientist Andrew Bolt reports...what precisely? ::)

If you actually read those reports you'll see that it was merely 5 scientists questioning the accuracy of the current models, NOT their conclusions. Bolt obviously didn't bother doing so.
Although the media likes to report speculation as fact all reasonable people know, as do the modellers themselves, that predictions are only likely projections, no more, and that fluctuations in any given data set can, indeed should, be expected. These do not invalidate the data nor the conclusions drawn.
Glaciers are a simple measure of the worlds climate due to their nature and composition, and there the facts are highly visible and irrefutable, even for a pseudo-genius like the Bolter!  ::)

From the referees report detailing part of the reason-

' the Otto et al forcing is deliberately "adjusted" to represent more closely recent observations, whereas AR5 has not put so much weight on these satellite observations, due to still persisting potential problems with this new technology'

http://ioppublishing.org/newsDetails/statement-from-iop-publishing-on-story-in-the-times

So it's not the models that are wrong but the satellite data.

But apparently they are only potential problems, so we must assume they have no proof of such.

And that of course is a contradiction of IPCC 2013 - where they used an "expert panel" for projections because the models were running too hot.

So because one paper gets rejected, suddenly there is a conspiracy and the rejected paper is really true?

What you are suggesting is next to impossible (having that many scientists collude to hide the truth).

Here is what the publisher had to say about it.

You did read it - right?

' i.e. the Otto et al forcing is deliberately "adjusted" to represent more closely recent observations, whereas AR5 has not put so much weight on these satellite observations, due to still persisting potential problems with this new technology'

So the satellites are wrong and the models are right? If the data is different to the supposition the data is wrong- adjust as necessary.

So why did the IPCC need an 'expert panel' as opposed the the models?

Hottest May on record in Sydney, and what does our LNP leaders do...

Halt all climate change research, and increase number of chaplins in schools.

"Prayer" seems to be the only answer.

Yes, of course I read it.

You are suggesting that because a group of experts looked at a variety of models and data when deciding what the most likely outcome is that in fact the entire premise is completely incorrect? Do you think they are just making it up as they go along?

Models have a predictive power, but we currently don't have the computing power or sensor data to achieve a high degree of fidelity. As the data and resources improve, so too does the power of the models. This isn't a reason to dismiss them.

Basically reviewer one rejected the paper because it made the mistake of saying "here is an inconsistency" rather than doing any meaningful analysis of why. Yes there is inconsistency, but it is expected because methods and what is being measured varies. There was no identification of what caused the variations, or exploration of how meaningful such variation is.

The second reviewer goes in detail, basically saying the paper is unclear and seems to use the wrong formula.

It's not surprising or suppressing that an important journal might reject a paper. It's certainly not sufficient evidence that climate change is entirely wrong. It raises questions about details, but that's the point of science.

It amazes me how you would be willing to accept the word of the author of one rejected paper over the the near entirety of the field as correct. I can only assume it's because it suits your beliefs.

Well spotted.  However it would take a particularly cold snap to not break the May record, and forecasts are predicting the same hot weather for the rest of May.

It may be out on a limb for deniers, but I think "hotest may on record", or at the very least "one of the hotest mays on record", is a lock.

Over the past 5,000 years the Earth underwent an overall cooling of around 0.5C
In just the last 100 years - since the start of the industrial age - it has warmed by the same amount.

Yeh, it's news-worthy but when push comes to shove the truth is it's all about the 'heat content' of a system and that system does not include state boundaries.

Temperature is an indicator of the 'heat content' of a system, basically! The 'heat content' is not always uniform throughout the system and in the case of the earth it obviously is not!

Bingo!

It's totally irrelevant.

The time period they're talking about is like a drop in the ocean.

100 years is quite a long time in a human's life.  No argument there.

However, it is infinitesimal when it comes to the history of the planet and changes in climate over that period.

The fact that humans changed the climate of the planet in just 100 years is in fact the point. Yes it's a drop in the ocean in terms of existence of the planet, but then so is all of human existence.

The earth may have seem some pretty warm times in the past, but we have not. The conditions that existed in the past were also due to different conditions in the past.

Current warming is recent and linked to human activity. i'm not really sure what you are trying to get at by saying 100 years isn't much time.

One cannot come to an accurate conclusion about the Earth's climate based on only one or two hundred years of official records.

You cant underestimate the significant cost and upheaval of any movement away from the record.

Farmers who turn on a tap do not really care what the world was like 10,000 years ago. They plan, and want the world to be like it was 10, 20, 50 years ago.

I addressed this further up, but yes it's not a fact, it's a theory supported by facts.

Like anything is science it's unproven, but it's more than mere supposition. It's strongly supported by the evidence we have to date.

Things that are facts are things like the amount OF C02 released, the temperature recorded at different times, the reduction of energy at C02 absorption wavelengths. These things are facts that support the scientific theory that the C02 humans have released is affecting the global climate.

No Greggery.  You have no point.

We are discussing the impact of human induced warming on human habitations and infrastructure over recent decades.  In this context, a century of weather records is very significant.

The billions of years of pre-history to this is not relevant.  It's mention is merely a feeble attempt from ignorant people to try to hide the fact that they do not understand the issue.

And it is a fact that humans changed the climate of the planet in just 100 years.  To deny this is just silly.

Things that are facts are things like the amount OF C02 released, the temperature recorded at different times, the reduction of energy at C02 absorption wavelengths. These things are facts that support the scientific theory that the C02 humans have released is affecting the global climate.

This has all been explained to Greggery a hundred times before.  He is a bit clueless unfortunately.

I can't make it any clearer.

It's relatively insignificant.

One cannot come to an accurate conclusion about the Earth's climate based on only one or two hundred years of official records.

Well if the first point is NOT a 'a fact', how can you say that this :

Things that are facts are things like the amount OF C02 released, the temperature recorded at different times, the reduction of energy at C02 absorption wavelengths.

Is a fact??? Either the THEORY of AGW is a 'theory' or it's NOT a 'theory'....pick ONE!!

What didn't you understand about Kytro's explanation?

It is a fact that we can measure the amount OF C02 released
It is a fact that it is increasing
It is a fact that we can measure the temperature recorded at different times
It is a fact that it is increasing
It is a fact that we can measure the reduction of energy at C02 absorption wavelengths
It is a fact the outgoing energy at C02 absorption wavelengths is decreasing.

These are facts.

And all of these facts, along with countless others support the theory that anthropogenic emissions are warming the planet.

What is missing - are any facts that indicate that anthropogenic emissions are not warming the planet.

This is why the theory is held to be a sound theory, and has become more and more sound in the century or so since it was first postulated.

In laymans terms - AGW is a fact.
It is about time you started to accept it.

A theory, in scientific terms is a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world that is acquired through the scientific method, and repeatedly confirmed through observation and experimentation.

So basically AGW is a theory, based on factual observations, such C02 release, temperature records etc...

The facts are the basis for the theory, but like all scientific theories it isn't a fact itself.

Yes, I know that..however, a 'theory' that isn't allowed to be falsifiable is not actually a valid theory, and since no one is actually permitted to challenged the idea of AWG, it's not in fact a scientific theory.

I find this to be a little incredulous. You are making a claim that papers are not published because they disagree, but the evidence for this can't be that the papers are not published because many papers are not published because they either flawed or don't meet the journal criteria.

Scientists have measured the influence of CO2 on both incoming solar energy and outgoing long-wave radiation. Less longwave radiation is escaping to space at the specific wavelengths of greenhouse gases. Increased longwave radiation is measured at the surface of the Earth at the same wavelengths. This is how they are testing (part of) the theory. If this wasn't occurring then you could say that was evidence the theory wasn't correct.

Simply because a scientist complains to the media about not being published isn't strong evidence they are being suppressed.

There seems to be a plethora of dates

Early records - from settlement
1870 - on
1900 - on
1910 - on
1979 - on...?

A maximum total of 244 years of records; not long is it?

And of course the data is no longer data, it has been adjusted so many times it i suffering an identity crisis.

Your "observed data" is relatively insignificant.

That's one of the major problems with your theory.

The temperature at my place right now is about 6 degrees warmer than it was when I woke up this morning.  Oh dear! The planet is warming!

If it had been falsified, then it would mean the theory was incorrect.

The Co2 question has been tested, and is backed evidence (direct measurements). The models offer a range of predictions, and so far observations have large fall within that range. Models are of course subject to fine tuning as more power / knowledge becomes available.

In terms of data, climate change studies are no different to any other scientific study in the way data are handled.

All science is a theory. In fact they are theories that are continually tested and refined.  Gravity, electricity, climate.

You cant dismiss a scientitic argument by saying it is "just" a theory, because you will have to dismiss all science if you did that.

Yes.  AGW is a theory.

Just as gravitation is.

And there we have it: the gravity "argument".

Didn't take too long.

Are you going to tell us that we really don't know if physical bodies attract each other, because  gravitation is "just a theory"?

No.

Are you?

I can't make it any clearer.

It's relatively insignificant.

One cannot come to an accurate conclusion about the Earth's climate based on only one or two hundred years of official records.

To suggest otherwise is just naive foolishness.

One can come to an accurate conclusion about the Earth's climate during the period of time that humans have populated it with significant infrastructure based on only one or two hundred years of official records Greggery.

This is what we are discussing Greggery.  This is the issue.

One can not accurately conclude that it is unusual, or even significant.

No Greggery.

An anomaly well beyond the observed data is unusual, and even significant.

The planet is warming.

To deny that is sily

Your "observed data" is relatively insignificant.

No Greggery.  Over a century of climate data is very significant in the context of man's built environment.  This is how we have towns and cities built where they are and how they are.  And this is why agriculture and other industries have developed the way they have.  All based on the relatively stable climactic conditions observed during the period of their development.  These climactic conditions are now changing significantly.

greggerypeccary wrote on May 27th, 2014 at 11:34am:

Not my theory Greggery.  A theory developed over decades by those that study these matters.  If the 'theory' had 'major problems' - it wouldn't be a valid theory.  But it doesn't.  So it is.

greggerypeccary wrote on May 27th, 2014 at 11:34am:

Yes Greggery.  Most parts of the planet generally warm and cool on a daily basis because of the rotation of the earth.  This is why an hourly time frame is not appropriate when discussing long term climate.

And there are other drivers such as ENSO or solar irradiance which affect climate over yearly or decadal time spans - this is why a yearly time frame is not appropriate when discussing long term climate.

And there are other non-cyclical drivers such as volcanic activity which may affect climate for a short amount of time on an irregular basis.

But when measured over many decades - these irregularities tend to even out - and we can observe a relatively stable climate.  This relatively stable climate is now being observed to be changing to a degree that is beyond the normally expected anomalies.

Two hundred years isn't.

If a 50yo man who had had a relatively constant weight of 80kg for a decade weighed himself every morning and noticed a 10% weight increase every week - would you argue that it is impossible to know if he is in fact gaining weight - because from his point of conception 50 years ago he gained weight at a much quicker rate?  Or would you perhaps disregard his embryonic and adolescent periods of weight gain as being not relevant to the issue of his current adult health?

That is wrong. Scientists gather all data that is available, and use that data to match to theoretical models.   If a model cherry picks data it is quickly exposed through peer review.

You seem to have a problem with the data not being linear in granularity. You seem to be alone there.

Deniers have had a long history of cherry picking data within the scientific data to push agenda's. muso posts a nice graph every now and then.

So dont go around painting scientists with this cherry picking nonsense.

Models can be fine tuned- agreed. After that fine tuning why don't they redo the hindcasting and see if that still fits the curve. Common sense tells you that it is unlikely to do so. Twenty odd years of models and they still aren't anywhere near correct.

If they want to use models it is time to throw away the ones they are using because they don't work, and start on a new series that may work.

Enough data to support their predictions.

Scientists arent predicting the world will become a molten volcano infested rock as it was 100 million years ago. They arent prediciting it will become a snowball as it was some x millions of years ago.

They are saying a shift of a few degrees will impact our ability to feed 6 billion people, and a few degrees will raise sea levels to impact coastal infrastructure.

These are things that will severly impact us humans. The rest of the planet may not notice so much.

What do you mean "rather than"? The expert panel relies on models vis CIMP5. It's a report on the current state of climate research and the predictions made by it.

Quote:
CMIP has received model output from the pre-industrial climate simulations ("control runs") and 1% per year increasing-CO2 simulations of about 30 coupled GCMs. More recent phases of the project (20C3M, ...) include more realistic scenarios of climate forcing for both historical, paleoclimate and future scenarios.

The IPCC seems fairly confident in the models, as do the vast majority of climate scientists. I see no reason to assume the dissenters are correct in this instance, it's not as though they have presented compelling evidence that attacks the fundamentals of the science of its predictions

As opposed to the argument these guys are right because I like what they say? Back it with credible science, instead of tired rhetoric that the truth is oppressed.

The reason there is appears to be a consensus is because of the vast amount of compelling evidence. The only controversy is political, not scientific, the dissent in climate change scientifically is no different from any other field in science. It's a part of normal practice. In most cases there is little public discourse on it, but since a bunch of short-sighted business people are worried about having less immediate profit they have created this nonsense controversy. This is no different to fake controversy over evolution.

Yes, like all science it is always possible there is an alternative explanation but ignoring overwhelming evidence and cherry picking the dissent isn't how science works. It's tin-foil hat conspiracy nonsense.

Exactly.

However, when it comes to climate change, the cult members don't agree.

There are actually members on this forum who think that AGW is "an undeniable scientific fact".

Their words, not mine.

Do you call people who accept the scientific evidence supporting gravitational theory "cult members" Greggery?

If not.  Why not?

I haven't actually seen any believers in gravitational theory who want to bring massive societal and economic changes, because they think gravity is being changed by human action..

So...you accept or reject science arbitrarily, based on your own personal prejudices?

Did you learn that from Andrew Bolt?

I am sure it has been explained to you many times - but you just refuse to listen.

Put simply - many things cause the planet's climate to change - orbital variations, tectonic movement, volcanic emissions, solar variation etc etc etc

None of these drivers are responsible for the observed warming over recent decades.  What has been measured however is a decrease in outgoing thermal energy in the same spectra that is absorbed by CO2 and other anthropogenic greenhouse gasses.

And the planet is warming.

This really isn't that difficult to grasp, is it?

https://www.ipcc.ch/report/ar5/wg1/docs/WGIAR5_SPM_brochure_en.pdf

So the level of certainty is lower than the 5%-95% model range. that is why they had an expert panel assessment. Less than 5% confidence? Doesn't sound good to me.

The observations have thus far been falling within the projected range. Climate models don't really make predictions so much as they do projections, which are under these conditions, this is what will happen. They make many runs and basically average them, but in reality the climate is much more likely to follow a specific run rather than the average.

The 5-95 percent range covers different possible outcomes, with some being much more likely than others, it does not mean there is less than 5% certainty that AGW is occurring. It means there is less than 5% certainty for specific outcomes.

This goes into more detail about the accuracy of projections.

I wonder if a moon sized meteor was on collision course with the earth (due to gravity)  in 50 years time how these skeptics of science would react ?

Would they shoot the messenger, cheery pick the flight paths, and prove it was a hoax and the meteor was going to miss by 1000's of miles.

That is what they are supposed do. Come up with a range of possible projections based on the conditions, but all the projections show some rise in temperature.

And the disagreement is over the CAUSE of the rise. Repeating that temperatures have risen is pretty pointless since most skeptics already know that.

well well well... 8-) 8-)

So...what is the alternate explanation for the cause of the rise?

And how does this alternate explanation negate the fact that anthropogenic emissions are re-emitting increasing thermal energy to the earth's surface?

According to the cult members, there is no disagreement.

Global warming is caused by humans, and that's an "undeniable scientific fact".

While natural actions do influence temperature, they know how much Co2 is being released by human activity as well as temperature measurements both on the ground and in the atmosphere. They can see as co2 level rises that less energy escapes at the corresponding wavelengths. This is pretty good evidence that co2 levels which people are responsible for are having a warming effect.

Sorry , who is Bolt? I seem to remember a children's show with Bolt in it.  Ah, I've found it - an Eastern States type.

Sorry he doesn't have a voice in the South of WA.

Some people seem to think that a level of confidence below their (IPCC) benchmark 5-95% is somehow a vote of confidence- convince me.

Nobody responded to the leap of faith between the Physics, which is the science, and the ECS, which is the shamanism.

The world has been warming for very many years, long before a postulated affect by CO2. If the 'pause' or cessation in global warming trend is attributed to natural variation, as it is, why cannot the increase in trend that was attributed to CO2, not be attributed to natural variation? Especially in a world of increased CO2 emissions.

Logic should tell us if the CO2 emissions are the cause, the increased emissions should have increased the trend.

It's not that the increase can't be natural, it's that evidence strongly suggests that it is not. It is possible that we have completely missed something, but no good reason to assume it is the case.

Well of course correlation isn't causation, but in this case there is also a mechanism involved, it's not simply correlation without any underlying mechanism. The greenhouse effect is fairly well understood.

yes but how does it equate to AGW? What metric should be used? The ECS is a construct that varies according to reports. CO2 is only a minor GHG. Why is it postulated that it has a much greater effect on the climate?

As requested:

Quote:
In 1970, NASA launched the IRIS satellite that measured infrared spectra between 400 cm-1 to 1600 cm-1. In 1996, the Japanese Space Agency launched the IMG satellite which recorded similar observations. Both sets of data were compared to discern any changes in outgoing radiation over the 26 year period (Harries 2001).

What they found was a drop in outgoing radiation at the wavelength bands that greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) absorb energy. The change in outgoing radiation is consistent with theoretical expectations. Thus the paper found "direct experimental evidence for a significant increase in the Earth's greenhouse effect".

This result has been confirmed by subsequent papers using more recent satellite data. The 1970 and 1997 spectra were compared with additional satellite data from the NASA AIRS satellite launched in 2003 (Griggs 2004). This analysis was extended to 2006 using data from the AURA satellite launched in 2004 (Chen 2007). Both papers found the observed differences in CO2 bands matching the expected changes from rising carbon dioxide levels. Thus we have empirical evidence that increased CO2 is causing an enhanced greenhouse effect.

A compilation of surface measurements of downward longwave radiation from 1973 to 2008 find an increasing trend of more longwave radiation returning to earth, attributed to increases in air temperature, humidity and atmospheric carbon dioxide (Wang 2009). More regional studies such as an examination of downward longwave radiation over the central Alps find that downward longwave radiation is increasing due to an enhanced greenhouse effect (Philipona 2004).

Taking this a step further, an analysis of high resolution spectral data allows scientists to quantitatively attribute the increase in downward radiation to each of several greenhouse gases (Evans 2006). The results lead the authors to conclude that "this experimental data should effectively end the argument by skeptics that no experimental evidence exists for the connection between greenhouse gas increases in the atmosphere and global warming."

Huber and Knutti (2011) published a paper in Nature Geoscience, Anthropogenic and natural warming inferred from changes in Earth’s energy balance.  They take an approach in this study which utilizes the principle of conservation of energy for the global energy budget using the measurements discussed above, and summarize their methodology:

"We use a massive ensemble of the Bern2.5D climate model of intermediate complexity, driven by bottom-up estimates of historic radiative forcing F, and constrained by a set of observations of the surface warming T since 1850 and heat uptake Q since the 1950s....Between 1850 and 2010, the climate system accumulated a total net forcing energy of 140 x 1022 J with a 5-95% uncertainty range of 95-197 x 1022 J, corresponding to an average net radiative forcing of roughly 0.54 (0.36-0.76)Wm-2."

Essentially, Huber and Knutti take the estimated global heat content increase since 1850, calculate how much of the increase is due to various estimated radiative forcings, and partition the increase between increasing ocean heat content and outgoing longwave radiation.  The authors note that more than 85% of the global heat uptake (Q) has gone into the oceans, including increasing the heat content of the deeper oceans, although their model only accounts for the upper 700 meters.

As expected, Huber and Knutti find that greenhouse gases contributed to substantial warming since 1850, and aerosols had a significant cooling effect:

"Greenhouse gases contributed 1.31°C (0.85-1.76°C) to the increase, that is 159% (106-212%) of the total warming. The cooling effect of the direct and indirect aerosol forcing is about -0.85°C (-1.48 to -0.30°C). The warming induced by tropospheric ozone and solar variability are of similar size (roughly 0.2°C). The contributions of stratospheric water vapour and ozone, volcanic eruptions, and organic and black carbon are small."

Since 1950, the authors find that greenhouse gases contributed 166% (120-215%) of the observed surface warming (0.85°C of 0.51°C estimated surface warming).  The percentage is greater than 100% because aerosols offset approximately 44% (0.45°C) of that warming.

"It is thus extremely likely (>95% probability) that the greenhouse gas induced warming since the mid-twentieth century was larger than the observed rise in global average temperatures, and extremely likely that anthropogenic forcings were by far the dominant cause of warming. The natural forcing contribution since 1950 is near zero."

Conclusion
There are multiple lines of empirical evidence that increasing carbon dioxide causes an enhanced greenhouse effect. Laboratory tests show carbon dioxide absorbs longwave radiation. Satellite measurements confirm less longwave radiation is escaping to space at carbon dioxide absorptive wavelengths. Surface measurements find more longwave radiation returning back to Earth at these same wavelengths. The result of this energy imbalance is the accumulation of heat over the last 40 years.

ah the satellite data.

But according to the reviewer on the recent Bengtsson paper -

'the Otto et al forcing is deliberately "adjusted" to represent more closely recent observations, whereas AR5 has not put so much weight on these satellite observations, due to still persisting potential problems with this new technology'

So can we rely on the satellite data?

How much is the naturally occurring CO2? How much effect does this have compared to human emissions?

Total CO2 must equal natural plus human caused. I haven't seen this question answered anywhere,

From the above paper-

'Thus we have empirical evidence that increased CO2 is causing an enhanced greenhouse effect.'

But that is not the argument. The argument is "How much"?

'Between 1850 and 2010, the climate system accumulated a total net forcing energy of 140 x 1022 J with a 5-95% uncertainty range of 95-197 x 1022 J, corresponding to an average net radiative forcing of roughly 0.54 (0.36-0.76)Wm-2."'

There's that 5-95% uncertainty range again.

As for the satellite issues, there are some known problems with some aspects of the data they collect, which keep needing adjustment. They are however not the only measurements taken.

For a bit more insight take a look

In terms of Co2 emissions:

Quote:

Manmade CO2 emissions are much smaller than natural emissions. Consumption of vegetation by animals & microbes accounts for about 220 gigatonnes of CO2 per year. Respiration by vegetation emits around 220 gigatonnes. The ocean releases about 332 gigatonnes. In contrast, when you combine the effect of fossil fuel burning and changes in land use, human CO2 emissions are only around 29 gigatonnes per year. However, natural CO2 emissions (from the ocean and vegetation) are balanced by natural absorptions (again by the ocean and vegetation). Land plants absorb about 450 gigatonnes of CO2 per year and the ocean absorbs about 338 gigatonnes. This keeps atmospheric CO2 levels in rough balance. Human CO2 emissions upsets the natural balance.

About 40% of human CO2 emissions are being absorbed, mostly by vegetation and the oceans. The rest remains in the atmosphere. As a consequence, atmospheric CO2 is at its highest level in 15 to 20 million years (Tripati 2009). A natural change of 100ppm normally takes 5,000 to 20.000 years. The recent increase of 100ppm has taken just 120 years.

Additional confirmation that rising CO2 levels are due to human activity comes from examining the ratio of carbon isotopes (eg ? carbon atoms with differing numbers of neutrons) found in the atmosphere. Carbon 12 has 6 neutrons, carbon 13 has 7 neutrons. Plants have a lower C13/C12 ratio than in the atmosphere. If rising atmospheric CO2 comes from fossil fuels, the C13/C12 should be falling. Indeed this is what is occurring (Ghosh 2003). The C13/C12 ratio correlates with the trend in global emissions.

You do realise that they are still 95% certain that current warming is caused by humans. It's a range of certainty for specific scenarios, the 5% is for extreme situations with higher or lower warming.

That is what they are supposed do. Come up with a range of possible projections based on the conditions, but all the projections show some rise in temperature.

And the disagreement is over the CAUSE of the rise. Repeating that temperatures have risen is pretty pointless since most skeptics already know that.

So...what is the alternate explanation for the cause of the rise?

And how does this alternate explanation negate the fact that anthropogenic emissions are re-emitting increasing thermal energy to the earth's surface?

No, I mean that this the first time that humans have had the knowledge and technology to actually study and attempt to understand a warm period. The Romans didn't, neither did people in the Medieval era.
It's impossible to be certain of the relationship between Co2 and warming, until we've observed a reduction in one, and either a corresponding reduction in the other, or no reduction in the other. (Which may be happening now, with the 15+ years of no warming, with a continued increase in the 'AGW driver' Co2.)

And I don't know what the natural action is, because no one has ever looked, they just went straight to Co2 = warming. It's much more likely, give ALL of the previous climate/temperature variations that pre-date human industrial technology, that the same drivers are at work now, that were at work in all the other warm periods.

No we didn't. We actually examined a range of possible causes and all bar this have been dismissed for lack of evidence.

We have a good idea of what was responsible for the medieval warm period and it isn't the same mechanism of action we currently see.

The fact warming has existed in the past does not invalidate the evidence we have for current warming.

How does it invalidate evidence? This isn't a case of them guessing, the evidence stands independently.

The climate has changed in the past, for various reasons, and no one is disputing it - like I pointed out they know the mechanism behind the medieval warm period is different to what is currently happening. Not only that but they can distinguish the ratio of man-made emissions to natural and can track the corresponding increases in temperature.

What does it matter if there are natural mechanisms that can affect climate. If it were a natural phenomena don't you think the evidence would indicate this?

It's like people are just grasping at straws, trying to find the smallest seed of doubt and inflate it to ridiculous proportions.

We can only work with the best data we have available and not having actual time machines means we use indirect measurements to make estimates. This isn't a blind guess, it's based on actual research with verification of the methods used to make estimates.

This is exactly the sort of thing I was talking about before. Grasping at straws trying to find something, anything at all to make the case appear weak despite the solid evidence backing it. Greens win was just as bad with the GMO stuff. What is it with people not wanting to actually accept science when it goes against their personal beliefs.

It's not like I have any vested interest in this being true. I don't actually think the governments will get their act together in time to deal with it cheaply anyway, because they are too concerned with the immediate economic impact. It's just frustrating as hell to see people dismiss large swathes of evidence they find inconvenient.
