Title: Tinnitus
Post by Peter Freedman on Feb 14th, 2014 at 9:07pm
Does anybody here have this affliction?

I do, it's getting worse, and there's no cure. It's bloody annoying to have constant ringing in the ears.

It's to do with being a prog. They all have it. It's an affliction brought about by being such self-contradictory p!cks. makes your brain go BZZZzzzzz.....

Try common sense.  Might not stop the BZZZzzzz but at least you will not have a ring in your ear AND be wrong.
It's all about your contradictory mental states catching up with you. Your brain (biology) can't cope with your mental disarray as a prog (spirit).

I am guessing, of course, and as a psychiatrist I advise you not to take this as professional advise but seek face to face medical help.

Excuse me, I've got to go - someone is buzzing at the door.

Well, at least they weren't ringing, I guess that's something.

I know someone that has it so bad he is deaf. He cant hear anything through the ringing. Apparently you can get hearing aids that filter it out but i guess his is too bad for that. Go see an audiologist if it continues. Otherwise (if its intermittent) its prolly nothing to worry about. Ignore soren.

;D ;D ;D

I've had it since my 20's...one too many heavy metal concerts.

At first I couldn't bear the thought of having to live with it forever, but now I don't even notice it unless I think about it.

Can't say it's brought me much joy. Just another one of those things in life to transcend.

****************

I've had it for a few years now, but it can't be that bad, because it's never really bothered me. I must have a very mild version of it.

I once saw a segment on one of the Current Affairs shows where there is an organisation which sends someone around to tinnitus sufferers with an injection that gives almost instant relief for 15 minutes or so.

In the segment, the woman who was given this injection looked ecstatically relieved as the ringing faded into blissful silence. The pleased look of enormous relief on her face was something to behold.

Every few weeks or so this nurse would come around to give her another 15 minutes or so of blissful silence.

Men on the moon ~ and yet they can't silence a simple thing like ringing in the ears, or migraine, or macular degeneration, alzheimer's, muscular dystrophy, etc etc. Incredible.

what about other symptoms?

If you have tinnitus, vertigo, and hearing loss, then you might want to check for Meniere's disease.    No cure for that either tho...

They say stress can be the cause of tinnitus.

So ..... where are you on the stress scale?

Myself:

Quote:
Lucky you! You appear to have no problem nodding off unlike 59% of Australians who say they worry about how well they are sleeping

Quote:
42% of Australians also felt more anxious when things around them where untidy

Quote:
Sadly 45% of Australians felt their lives were out of control, you seem to have this in check though, well done

I've experienced it mildly a couple of times - but about a year ago - I woke up during the night and the room was spinning. I couldn't get my balance and was nauseous. I thought it was some sort of stroke, but it was my first experience with vertigo.

I went to hospital and the doctor used the Epley Manoeuvre on me. It was amazing and I felt well almost immediately. You can do it at home by yourself if it hits you suddenly.

As for me,

Overall you appear to be a little more stressed than most. See below for more information on how you compare to the rest of Australia*

sleep
59% of Australians also said that they have trouble sleeping
untidy
42% of Australians also felt more anxious when things around them where untidy
expenses
66% of Australians also found bills and expenses to cause stress
* Based on a nationally representative sample of 1,524 Australians aged 18+

Tinnitus...caused by many factors.. I have it but don't notice it normally, unless I am stressed or very tired and then it's louder, usually caused by exposure to explosions and extremes of noise..concerts etc...you will learn to ignore it after a while.

Usually, but not always.

I've lived quietly all my life, and wore good ear-plugs in the workplace.

My head sings like a tree full of cicadas ~ always has, as far as I can remember.

Right now it's singing in High 'C'.

yes tinnitus is caused by many factors...noise damage being the most common....
I imagine it could drive you completely nuts but I have learned to ignore it...completely

Searching for something else I found this.

A few years ago a virus invaded my left ear and largely destroyed the cochlea and left me with “severe to profound” hearing loss in that ear.

Eventually, tinnitus showed up. Initially and still sometimes, like now, it manifests as a rushing sound, white noise perhaps. Most irritating, it manifests as music—the first two notes of something, once the first two notes of the Dr Who theme music.

Reason for this is that the part of the brain processing sounds from that ear eventually processes the signal of our pulse. Hence the two notes produced by the “deaf ear.” Not sure where the white noise comes from.

I bought a bluetooth speaker, placed that on the left side of my desk and have it on a little bit too loud. The theory? Whatever sound reached the sound processing part of the brain would help avoid tinnitus.

Worked well for a couple of months. Have the “white noise” in my left ear right now, heard the other tinnitus effect as well. Have an idea to reduce this and will report back.
