Thanks to Abbotts obsession with sending Aussie jobs overseas all of our navy bean growers will be going to the wall.

SPC is in trouble because they can't compete with dumped foreign products. We are supposed to have a watchdog or someone who monitors dumping because it's illegal - but this problem is being totally ignored.

Governments don't care.

If we buy SPC over the cheaper products - it will help the company and its contractors stay afloat. Unfortunately most people opt for the cheaper product. So much for FTA's.

Like most politicians - he puts his family, friends and church before the rest of us.

He is closing the Charity Watchdog down because the Catholic Church has made too many complaints. There will be no-one to complain to about corruption. It's best not to give to charities at all now. Good work Abbott.

Quote:
The Abbott government's decision to scrap the national charities watchdog will remove crucial oversight and could affect public confidence in the system, the public sector union says.

Social Service Minister Kevin Andrews confirmed this week he would move to abolish the Charities and Not-For-Profits Commission, just as the agency released its first full-year results showing dozens of allegations of fraud and corruption in the nation's charities. Up to 100 public service jobs look set to be lost.

Mr Andrews said the commission, which has been bitterly opposed by Catholic charities, would be replaced by a more voluntary approach to regulation.

There would also be a move to restore the role of the Australian Taxation Office, which previously regulated much of the sector.

After a marathon or long distance cycle a tin of SPC baked beans with lashings of bacon and eggs is like heaven.
We grow the best navy beans in this country but thanks to Tony Abbott we are going to lose another industry.

Abbott has nothing to do with it, and even you should be able to realise that if you take your blinkers off.
SPC cant compete with the imports, and SPC spent a motza buying up Ardmona some years back.
This has absolutely nothing to do with a government who has only been in office a short time.
SPC has priced themselves out of the market, and your average Australian shopping in Coles / Woolies will take a cheaper price over Australian ownership considerations any day of the week and there is nothing any government can do to change that.

Ask yourself..

If you were to put money into shares on Australian companies would you put it into bad companies losing money?

NO... no you wouldn't...

You'd find profitable well run companies and invest your money there...

The Australian government handles tax payers money and we expect them to make wise decisions in how they invest our money....

The decision by the Abbott liberal government not to throw away hard earned tax payers money into poorly run unprofitable companies with greedy workers and thug unions is the right decision...

100% right...

Abbott degree in economics is paying off  ;)

It makes a difference having educated and qualified personnel in your political party... Labor should try it some time..

The bigger picture is whether anyone is concerned about the demise of Australian food production and manufacturing. Are we to become totally reliant on imported products which aren't subject to the same regulation our growers are?

There might come a day when we don't have the resources to feed ourselves in the event of an overseas disaster which contaminates or blocks supply.

Yes there are a range of issues here...

First one is wages and staff....

Two, supply of OS canned food being dumped in Australia...

Three, people here are NOT buying SPC products... the same people complaining that it may be shut down...

Four, we pay foreign aid to poor countries... billions... those governments then pay the peasant farmers a few miserable dollars from our foreign  aid to grow fruit then they need to get rid of it...

So it gets dumped in places like Australia...

So you see ... we have helped create this problem by dishing out foreign aid.... and Labor increased it by billions...

Vicious circle ...

the region has received in the order of $1.2 billion of irrigation infrastructure in recent years specifically built around the fruit growing properties...

Another 1.8 Billion dollars was given to that area for flood relief a couple of years  back...

So that's 3 billion dollars in government assistance in that area in recent times...

There has to be a line drawn in the sand at some point because it seems that area is becoming welfare dependant...

How much would they want next year? And the year after that? Etc etc..

Arguments like - well, they got welfare so why shouldn't the rest of us? - and herein lies the problem...

Because all of this corporate welfare is getting headlines all over the country they are starting to line up one after the other with their hands out...

"PLEASE SIR, CAN I HAVE SOME MORE"

for goodness sake...

Governments, businesses and Australian workers must all learn to live within its means...

And if they can't.... stop blaming everyone else except yourself... take some responsibility for crying out loud  ::)

Coca Cola Amatil own SPC, it is an American Company worth billions and billions of dollars.

Why then are they asking the Australian Government to put in 25 million to 'save' SPC.

If the answer is as simple as spending 25  million to make SPC a going concern again, then why doesn't Coca Cola write a cheque? They most probably have more money than our gross domestic product.

We were conned for years and years with GMH, poured in hundreds of millions and look at GMH pulling out now that the tap has been turned off. Nice to see that Tony Abbott is going down that track for us. He must, he has to, make a stand against this Multi National con job for our dollars.

Yes it is going to hurt but Tony Abbott has to make us competitive. SPC is already an American subsidiary.

Than heavens Rudd, Gillard etc have been kicked out. They would have decimated this Country with another term of office.

Countries served[edit]

Coca-Cola Amatil currently employs 14,900 people in six countries across the Asia-Pacific region, and had after-tax profits of A$558.4 million in 2012 calendar year on EBIT of A$895.5 million. Its share price has consistently outperformed the ASX 200 market index over the past few years.

The company is the bottler of Coca-Cola products in Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, and Samoa.

Ownership[edit]

Coca-Cola Amatil is an Australian company, however The Coca-Cola Company has a 29% shareholding in Coca-Cola Amatil, as it does with each of its primary or "anchor" bottlers in the worldwide Coca-Cola system.

History[edit]

The company's Australian origins date back to 1904 as the tobacco company British Tobacco (Australia). Its first foray into soft drinks came in 1964 with the purchase of Coca-Cola Bottlers (Perth), and the company was listed on the Australian Stock Exchange in 1972.

Soft drinks and snack foods gradually became the primary focus of the company, which was renamed Amatil Limited in 1977. It began to expand bottling operations overseas in Europe, purchasing a Coca-Cola bottling plant in Australia in 1982 and expanding into Fiji and New Zealand in 1987. A majority stake was purchased by The Coca-Cola Company in 1989, although today its ownership is 29%.

The snack food operations were sold in 1992, and European operations were spun off into a new company, Coca-Cola Beverages, in 1998. Expansion into Asia continued, though Filipino bottling was eventually sold to San Miguel Brewery and parent The Coca-Cola Company.

Coca-Cola Amatil's Managing Director is Terry Davis, and the board chairman is David Gonski.

CCA has facilities all over Australia, with key sites at Northmead (NSW), North sydney (NSW), Richlands (Qld), Moorabbin (VIC), Thebarton (SA) and Kewdale (WA).

From 2006 to 2011, CCA had a joint venture (named Pacific Beverages) with SABMiller to distribute its drinks in Australia. In 2011, SABMiller acquired Foster's Group and full ownership of Pacific Beverages; in exchange, Foster's sold its Fiji and Samoa

Originally the British Tobacco Company (Australia) Limited.

Then changed their name to Allied Manufacturing and Trade Industries Limited, and then AMATIL Limited, and finally Coca-Cola Amatil Limited (CCA).

I don't think your average Australian housewife considers the demise of Australian food production and manufacturing whilst walking the isles with the shopping list in her hand.
Why?
She's too busy comparing the prices.
Cost is the primary consideration.

Try thirty plus years, and get the blinkers off.
As to the production workers, thanks to long term effective bargaining by Unions and their Labor flunkies has ensured that our goods will never ever cost compete with an imported one, and those same goods can never cost compete on an overseas shelf next to local product.

Yes it is going to hurt but Tony Abbott has to make us competitive. SPC is already an American subsidiary.

Than heavens Rudd, Gillard etc have been kicked out. They would have decimated this Country with another term of office.

I'll ask you the same questions True Blue does not seem to want to answer:

Why give Cadbury $19 million? (owned by overseas interests who made a billion dollar profit last year)

Why give Manly Warringah RL club $10 million?

Pork barrelling before an election is different to being an asshole in the first year after an election.   Their timing was wrong - in 2 years time Tony will be begging them to take a handout.

I think you have all missed the point here.

See, killing-off the baked-bean industry is all a part of Toenail's
'Direct Action' plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

We all know that baked beans, when digested, release large quantities
of methane gas, which is what causes those thunderous 'bean farts'.

But methane also contributes to AGW, so getting rid of it is a great
initiative by Toenail, and one which should be loudly and vociferously
lauded.

And as an added benefit, the land which once held the bean farms
can now be dug up to provide a quick profit-fix for Gina & Co. Or
flogged-off to the Chinese in another classic 'sell the golden goose'
scenario.

Everybody wins (well, everybody but us average Aussies).

or maybe he could pull up trees from elsewhere and replant them on the farms and call it a 'direct action' success!  :)

Regrettably Glee you are correct on both counts. Tony Abbott 'pork barrelled' before the election in regard to Cadbury's future there in order to secure seats in Tasmania. Manly Warringah League's club 10 million, you don't have to be a genius do you? Where does he live again?

I'm not 'for' this approach, I'm dead against it.

It is my personal belief that the Taxpayer should not prop up businesses that are not Australian. I make exemptions for wholly owned Australian businesses that might survive with a loan.

e.g. Australian Farmers often need help to get them through drought ravaged years...that type of scenario, by all means help out.

You see I'm for Australia and not a political party in particular.

At the moment I think the Liberals are our only way out, Labor was a full on disaster.

They had their chance twice and they blew it twice.

Listen pal...

I'm not just sitting here all day awaiting for your beck and call... I've better things to do than to spoon feed a man information with childlike mind who can't  secure his own education...

Apart from my already extensive list above...

Liberals not wanting to lose ground in Manly "MATCHED" Labors 10 million dollar election promise...

Most likely because they didn't know the "real" extent of how  bad the budget was at that time...

In Tasmania they were also trying to win a tight seat trying to take it off that scumbag Wilke..

SPC is a safe Liberal seat holding a 70% margin... the liberals would have to kill the first born son of every family in Shepparton to lose the seat....

So this is no better time for the Liberals to take a stand on Corporate Welfare...

See... its not rocket surgery...  :D

thanks for the considered answer.  I also am not a sycophant to any political party, but these particular "grants" I find ludicrous.  A bit of consistency from Abbott would be refreshing, cause at the moment all I can see is a party that has no definite plan and seems to be making these type of decisions based on how the wind is blowing at the time.

LOL.  Would you mean rocket science by any chance  ;D

So in your opinion, pork barrelling is fine?  SPC can miss out because the LNP won't lose the seat either way?  Not much of an argument is it!

As for my "education", I asked two questions both of which I already knew the answer.  I was interested in how you differentiated the grants (SPC vs Cadbury) based on the excuse Abbott offered SPC; ie the parent company was in profit, when Cadbury is in the same boat.

And as for Manly Warringah........ just pure waste.  If the local council cannot manage their own infrastructure then maybe they should ask their fans for help.  It is a football club FFS

So - no need to get your knickers in a knot. I am sure you are adult enough to cope with being challenged aren't you?

Thanks to Abbotts obsession with sending Aussie jobs overseas all of our navy bean growers will be going to the wall.

From what I heard this morning, Abbott wouldn't go to the aid of SPC in Shepperton because the unions have benefitted the workers out of jobs.

One has to wonder at the agenda of the unions. They seem to concentrate in destroying industry.

Only a couple of nights back, Brian Wilshire (the so-called conservationist) was going for Abbott for refusing to come to the rescue of these workers.

Now I understand why, once again, the unions have benefitted workers out of their jobs.

Not "bean" farmers but workers too well benefitted by our criminal unions.

Why the business hadn't seen the fall is remarkable.
The best the industry can do is to band together, kick out the unions and make a fresh business start.

Other consequences too, Red.

The UK DSS in Manchester requested supporting mothers to disclose details of the fathers of their children, one reply was, : " I cant tell you his name, it's like when you eat a can of beans, how do you know which one made you fart."

There was a fairy tale of a fisherman catching a fish. The fish promised all sorts of rewards if he returned it to the water.

When the fishwife heard the story she took over from her husband, started making demands of this fish . . . er. . . more and more until the fish gave up and returned the fishwife to her hovel.

Liken this fishwife to the union officials whose demands lost the locals their jobs.

Many Australian jobs are shifted overseas because of te generosity of the blo.dy union interference.

Being an EBA, it must be lodged with the fair work commission and is thus on the public record for anyone who could be bothered to look it up.

http://www.fwc.gov.au/documents/agreements/fwa/AE899535.pdf

No mention of the Melbourne Cup anywhere. 28 days annual leave ( including non-working days = 4 weeks ). There is some poo in there but as far as EBAs go, nothing out of the box.

Very unfortunate that SPC is about to vapourise. It is an endemic problem that is seeing the closure or departure of our traditional industrial base. SPC is not the only one in recent times to struggle and will not be the last.

It is very convenient to lay blame at the relative wage levels locally, union activity and the high dollar. Unfortunately, the effects of these are quite small. By far the biggest influence on the demise of local production is the appalling decline in Australian productivity growth. The last one and a half decades has seen the most sustained fall in this area. Even spending time in negative territory.

Productivity growth is one of the major economic performance indicators that point to real wealth sustainability. Without it, our competitors eventually catch up and are able to move their products to us at a lower cost.

It is true that many world leading economies have suffered the same fate but ours has been thoroughly abysmal, the 2nd lowest in the developed world. This is the one that that will bite each and every one us on the arse. Leading economists have warned about this to governments of both persuasion with no changes in policy settings to encourage businesses to make the necessary investments in this area. Instead our illustrious leaders seem to think that stopping the boats is far more important.

I've rambled on enough for now. For anyone truly interested in this most important phenomenon, the following is tedious reading at 86 pages but a great insight into the real picture.
