We definitely do need more politeness. You can insult people politely - but you can't be guaranteed the same in return.

Being Polite is always a good starting place!
You can still make a point or points, But it can generally be done in a non antagonistic way. I recommend it be tried, whether you think you are the oppressed or the oppressor! |

Sorting the wheat from the chaff: shouldn't "politeness" perhaps be codified as the only forum rule? ...or is that too daring for some? :D |

I much prefer to do unto others before they get the opportunity to do unto me. Much safer, that way. |

You know what I mean - as do other polite people. [smiley=smiley.gif] You can make a polite comment without swearing or being personally abusive and although it mightn't appeal to the person it's directed at you get a disgusting response in return - something along these lines.... "get f?#& you b@&%# and c&%#" or they make it so personally offensive that you're shocked into being unable to respond. I've seen many people forced off forums over the years because they can't deal with these ugly people. They demand free speech, but make it impossible for others to enjoy the same. |

Thank you. :) Sometimes I get stuck with being too polite. I have a Chinese dentist who literally can't stop talking once I flop down into the reclining chair, ready for her to start butchering me. While she has needles, drill-bits, suction-tubes, sharp prongs, chopsticks and God knows what else in my wide-open mouth ... she demands constant acknowledgement from me while she chatters away emotionally at high speed about something in the news that has greatly upset her. I'm choking and gagging, and trying not to scream with the pain of needles hitting the roots instead of the gums ~ and all the while I feel obliged to grunt every few seconds while nodding my head to let her know I'm hearing everything she's telling me with her mouth only 6 inches from my face. I seriously thought of finding another dentist because of her nervous chatter. And that's what it is ~ any silence between us makes her nervous. But she's otherwise a nice lady and very good at her job. |

The Chinese are very polite and well mannered generally. I've got a Chinese dentist too and even though his work is probably average at best, he's quick, painless, very pleasant and available on short notice.
You have to wonder why the Chinese choose dentistry - their eyesight normally isn't very good. Maybe their parents choose it for them? |

It's probably about uni entrance marks for the different courses in descending order. 1st. Doctor 2nd. Dentist 3rd. Optometrist 4th. Chemist 5th. Chinese restaurant owner. 6th. Bargain shop manager. 7th. Massage Parlour. 8th, Sweat shop in the rag trade 9th. Illegal drugs trafficking Something like that. ::) |
