Survey finds ignorance uptick on climate change

Posted by NUVO Editors on Thu, Jan 16, 2014 at 11:45 AM

Editor's note: The news desk received the following press release from Yale University at 10:14 a.m. on Jan. 16.

ABOUT 1 IN 4 AMERICANS SAY GLOBAL WARMING IS NOT HAPPENING

HALF SAY THEY ARE "WORRIED" ABOUT IT

A national survey conducted in the final months of 2013 finds that there has been an increase in the proportion of Americans who believe global warming is not happening (23%, up 7 percentage points since April 2013). But about two in three Americans (63%) believe global warming is happening, a number that has been consistent since spring 2013. The proportion of Americans who say they "don't know" whether or not global warming is happening has dropped 6 points - from 20% to 14% - since spring of 2013.

On other measures, the survey found that public awareness over the past year has remained essentially stable:

About half of Americans (51%) say they are "somewhat" (38%) or "very worried" (15%) about global warming.

Fewer than half of Americans (38%) believe they personally will be harmed a "moderate amount" or a "great deal" by global warming. By contrast, majorities believe that global warming will harm future generations of people (65%) and plant and animal species (65%).

"Our findings show that the public's understanding of global warming's reality, causes, and risks has not improved and has, in at least one important respect, gone in the wrong direction over the past year," said researcher Ed Maibach, PhD, of George Mason University. "Better public communication about global warming is needed now more than ever."

The survey also found that Americans (59%) are "interested" in global warming.

Moreover, about four in 10 say they feel "helpless" (43%), "disgusted" (42%), or "sad" (40%) when thinking about global warming. By contrast, four in ten (42%), say they feel "hopeful" about the subject.

"Global warming stirs a number of emotions among Americans," said lead researcher Anthony Leiserowitz, PhD, of Yale University. "But these emotions differ greatly across 'Global Warming's Six Americas'. For example, other than saying they feel 'interested,' the 'Alarmed' are mostly afraid, sad, and angry about global warming, while the 'Dismissive' are mostly disgusted and angry. These different emotional responses are clearly fueling the debate."

These findings come from a nationally representative survey - Climate Change in the American Mind - conducted by the Yale Project on Climate Change Communication and the George Mason University Center for Climate Change Communication. Interview dates: November 23-December 9, 2013. Interviews: 830 Adults (18+).
Total average margin of error: +/- 3 percentage points at the 95% confidence level. The research Energy Foundation, the 11th Hour Project, the Grantham Foundation, and the V.K. Rasmussen Foundation funded the research.

It also says that those who believe global warming is not happening has gone up from 16% to 23%.

Probably freezing their keysters off at the time.  ;D

I wonder what the %'ages would be in Australia ?

You'll never get total agreement in the public, so 20% denialism is always down to the tin foil hat brigade who still think the moon landing was faked.

Well THAT is a massive over simplification. Maybe 20% OF skepticism is down to the tinfoil hat brigade..

yes it was a simplification. Denialism is a complex position to be in.  Many contradictory factors, which only confuses them more, pushing them into a sort of "dont understand, dont like" mentality.

The limitations of their brain capacity frustrates them to such a degree they get angry, and what better target for their anger than intellectuals and governments.

And then you need to factor in skepticism...those people who DO believe the climate is changing, but aren't convinced as to the amount of man's contribution to the change.

It's like the extraterrestrial life idea, lots of people believe that there IS life on other planets and other solar systems, but not all of them believe that Queen Elizabeth is a shape shifted alien reptile.

So much better than the religious left who to jack up electricity prices through a carbon tax and have them expire in the heat and freeze in the cold. And both left and right have been happy for their jobs to be sent overseas. The sad thing is you think the Labs are any different and  really care. You have a short memory if you don't remember the savage cuts to single mothers benefits at the start of last year.

Electricity prices have shot up because of gold plating, low income people were compensated for the price on carbon. If you think that what Labor did to single parents was bad, and I certainly didn't agree with it, you ain't seen nothing yet, wait until Abbott gets to 'em and everyone else that relies on welfare. As for jobs being off-shored, it sucks but that's private enterprise for you.

Yes gold plating that prevents regular black and brown outs when you have periods of higher than normal usage. And where new growth areas have insufficient infrastructure to cope with demand there would be whining like you wouldn't believe about the lack of forward thinking.  ::)

We don't use Aircons or heaters, we do have fans but they don't use much, neither does opening windows. Why should I pay so people that want to live in a climate controlled environ can? The doubling and more of electricity prices is not due to the price on carbon, which is what you were insinuating.

Same reason u pay for 8 lane freeways and only use one lane. Gold plating is good, it could also be called future proofing but the retards led by Gillard couldn't spin it that way.

Of course you would rather maintain the status quo on electricity capability of the poles and wires and go without airconditioning and a host of other electrical devices in your home, that consume ever more power.

No, he's right...too much gold plating going on...(drove on one a few months back hardly anyone on it) those 8 lane freeways (or more latterly feeways)... cut them back to 2 lanes and sell off the excess land to pay for increases to welfare payments.

That made me smile, good to see some of you have a sense of humour. :)
