Title: Giant Antarctic glacier beyond point of no return Post by # on Jan 15th, 2014 at 11:05am Monday, 13 January 2014 AFP Antarctica's Pine Island Glacier, one of the biggest single contributors to world sea-level rise, is melting irreversibly and could add as much as a centimetre to ocean levels in 20 years, say scientists. The glacier "has started a phase of self-sustained retreat and will irreversibly continue its decline," says Gael Durand, a glaciologist with France's Grenoble Alps University. Durand and an international team used three different models to forecast the glacier's future based on the "grounding line," which is the area under water where the ice shelf - a sea-floating extension of the continent-covering ice sheet - meets land. This line has receded by about 10 kilometres in the past decade. The grounding line "is probably engaged in an unstable 40 kilometre retreat," according to the study, published in the journal Nature Climate Change. A massive river of ice, the glacier by itself is responsible for 20 per cent of total ice loss from the West Antarctic Ice Sheet today. On average, it shed 20 billion tonnes of ice annually from 1992-2011, a loss that is likely to increase up to and above 100 billion tonnes each year, the study's authors write. This is equivalent to 3.5 to 10 millimetres of global average sea-level rise over the next 20 years. The global mean sea level rose by 3.2 millimetres in 2010 - itself a near-doubling from the rate of two decades earlier. The European Space Agency said last month that the West Antarctic ice sheet was shedding ice at a much faster rate than before - currently at about 150 cubic kilometres per year. Climate scientists are keeping a worried eye on the mighty ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica, as continued losses could threaten vulnerable coastal cities with dangerously high sea levels. Last year, the United Nations' climate science body, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) projected sea levels would rise between 26 and 82 centimetres by 2100. |

It's all Tony Abbott's fault.

Title: Re: Giant Antarctic glacier beyond point of no return Post by Sprintcyclist on Jan 15th, 2014 at 11:40am So if it is 'beyond the point of no return' .............. it doesn't matter then ? |

First it hasn't melted yet so currently in the prediction category.
Second natural variability and the geological record have recorded the cyclical patterns in climate where extreme heat (more than currently) has been followed by extreme cold... and repeat...and repeat...etc So hardly irreversible. |

Its not Tony Abbotts fault at all. He's just advocating a position of making it melt faster from here on in. |

Well, ....ok then, it doesn't matter. i.e. Bad things are going to happen, but hey, what's new! And the sun will crack the horizon tomorrow morning yet again, too. Its just all too difficult. ::) |

Your not the only one who can read data although you don't seem to comprehend much. I'm at a loss as to what you are disputing is the ice is all gone is it? If not it's a prediction. Do you dispute that there cycles where it has been hotter than now and much colder and this seems fairly regular from the ice core data... Do you dispute that such data exists? I'm not an astronomer either but I predict the sun will rise in the east and set in the west once a day for the next week... |

Saying the glacier will be gone in 20 years and raise sea levels 1cm is opinion. The cyclical nature of past climate and evidence of the scope of that variability is as much scientific fact as the rotation of the earth producing sunrises and sunsets. You really are starting to make a knob of yourself. |

Title: Re: Giant Antarctic glacier beyond point of no return Post by namnugenot on Jan 16th, 2014 at 4:01pm What does the graph say? Well pretty much... Hot, cold, hot, cold, hot, cold, hot, cold, and back to hot... I'm going to opinion that there are points on this graph where according to the revolutionary and controversial theory that ice does melt when it's hot that glacier's and ice retreated multiple times over this time period. So in fact this was not irreversable and ice did reform otherwise there would be no ice to melt now. |
