Senior Gold Coast LNP member admits to trolling online


A SENIOR member of the Gold Coast LNP has admitted to having troll accounts to attack political opponents anonymously online.

LNP Currumbin branch chairman Tim Gear recently boasted on his Facebook page: "We all have troll accounts".

Mr Gear's post about trolls was followed by a satirical, but not offensive, comment involving Labor's Burleigh candidate Gail Hislop.

Another member of the Young LNP claimed he had been blocked from Ms Hislop's state campaign Facebook page and that he intended to set up troll accounts closer to the election.

Mr Gear could not be reached for comment.

It is likely that staffers from all parties are instructed to influence public opinion online by participating in internet discussions, social media and the like. I doubt many of the politicians themselves do it, but I've seen plenty to suggest that their staffers do.

Did I hear them say, in parliament, that internet bullying must be stopped?

No, it isn't "human nature to troll". Trolling is a sign of mental illness. Some poor souls gratify themselves by irritating others, but it's far from normal.

If he got elected, he's entitled to represents his constituents. I doubt he will be there long, though; he might be in one of the 20 or so seats that the Newman government will inevitably lose with the 7% swing against them at the next election.

How fit are you Skip?  Could you do a triathlete course?  You are around Abbott's age .... 50ish ....  Even Julia could run faster than you can, I imagine.  ;D

I could beat Abbott or Gillard over any course, bike, swimming or running, Nef, as long as the course was less than five metres.
