Title: Pope Francis denounces ‘trickle-down’ economics Post by ImSpartacus2 on Jan 8th, 2014 at 8:03am
What a pleasant surprise. I'm actually starting to like this guy. For a while now he has been warning the world about the tyranny of unfettered capitalism and recently had this to say:-
"Some people continue to defend trickle-down theories which assume that economic growth, encouraged by a free market, will inevitably succeed in bringing about greater justice and inclusiveness in the world. This opinion, which has never been confirmed by the facts, expresses a crude and naive trust in the goodness of those wielding economic power and in the sacralized workings of the prevailing economic system.... Meanwhile, the excluded are still waiting.” Full article in the Washington Post http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/economy/pope-francis-denounces-trickle-down-economic-theories-in-critique-of-inequality/2013/11/26/e17ffe4e-56b6-11e3-8304-caf30787c0a9_story.html |

Title: Re: Pope Francis denounces ‘trickle-down’ economics Post by Kat on Jan 8th, 2014 at 8:08am The trouble with 'trickle-down' economies, is that the trickle dries up once it reaches the middle-class. The working class and those on welfare always end up with nothing. |

Title: Re: Pope Francis denounces ‘trickle-down’ economics Post by pansi1951 on Jan 8th, 2014 at 8:11am He could be speaking from a personal point of view, not as a representative of the Catholic Church. He lived a frugal down to earth life before he became the pope. I am wondering when he will start to offload some church assets to help the poor though. Maybe he is. |

Whilst not a big fan of the vatican (they do seem to surround themselves with the trappings of the elite), i , do find, the current pope to be quite sensible on a lot of levels and he may be able to slightly modernise the church. to do so would require some sort of miracle though ;)

That's a pretty extreme interpretation of trickle-down theory. Sounds like the pope is building a strawman.

Yup - good old Catholicism as a social force has reared its ugly head once more and the Church Militant is on the field....
About time, too. Now - I'm no Catholic though my mother was - but there has always been a strong element of social justice in the Catholic Church and any other church worth its salt... and it is good for the church and the people for the religious heads to raise issues that impact on the majority, primarily in a negative way, such as piss-poor economics leading to endemic poverty for many to favour a few. It has been a source of amazement to me that churches can trim their sails to the prevailing wind so much - and like Labrador here - lost sight and track of their prime aim in life - ordinary people. It has also been a source of amazement to me that 'communist' governments tend to hate the very forces in religion that advocate most strongly, in many cases, for the ordinary person. That's politics for ya! Good on ya, Frank! Give it to 'em! |

Francis is spot on. Trickle down never works. It is just a theory expounded by the rich and powerful to ensure they stay that way.

The Pope has also emphasized environmental awareness as part of his critique of the capitalism, writing: “In this system, which tends to devour everything which stands in the way of increased profits, whatever is fragile, like the environment, is defenseless before the interests of a deified market, which becomes the only rule.” Sooooo true. |

Growth economies slowly add the poor: oh look you've won the lottery! Dodgy theories backed by standing armies and nuclear might got attacked and why would it stop?
Just because americans no longer travel the world thinking they're untouchable ..... well i suppose it does help to try the small target strategy but lol war is conducted in the economic sphere so..... |

What a giggle. The left hate the Catholic Church and all it stands for, in fact they hate all religions except maybe Islam and that only because of their radical mindset against western values.
And yet a Pope says something vaguely aligned with their own misguided philosophies born out of envy and they're all over him like a rash. |

Trickle down can work in a business model but only when the employees or Unions are strong enough to squeeze a few bucks out of the bstds.
Otherwise they will just keep the lot. |

Your old & a little simple so let me explain at least my POV I do not hate the Church or any religion What I despise is the leaders & so called followers of these worthy ideals blatant hypocrisy. As light points out, the Catholic church alone could solve poverty, yet it doesn't. No ONE single person on this forum that claims to follow Jesus Christs teachings comes even close to the Jesus Christ I was taught about. In fact they more often than not support the position exactly opposite to Jesus's teachings. Money is the New Golden Calf, & your all worshiping at it feet. Quote:

Lou Reed captured the trickle down intent of the captains of capitalism when he penned:
"Give me your hungry, your tired your poor I'll piss on 'em That's what the Statue of Bigotry says Your poor huddled masses, let's club 'em to death And get it over with and just dump 'em on the boulevard" |
