Title: Hottest year on record Post by the wise one on Jan 3rd, 2014 at 9:04am
Australia has just sweltered through its hottest year on record, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
Average temperatures were 1.20 degrees Celsius above the long-term average of 21.8C, breaking the previous record set in 2005 by 0.17C, the bureau said in its Annual Climate Statement. All states and territories recorded above average temperatures in 2013, with Western Australia, Northern Territory and South Australia all breaking annual average temperature records. The country recorded its hottest day on January 7, as well as the hottest week and hottest month on record. Meanwhile, extreme conditions have persisted into the first days of 2014, with soaring temperatures in areas extending from Queensland's interior to Central Australia, northern South Australia and north-western New South Wales. http://www.abc.net.au/news/#state=nsw So come all you d!ckheads explain how you think it isn't getting warmer and wasn't the 2012 the hottest on record back then |

This proves the we are in a global cooling cycle.
Since January 2013, Australia's temperatures has cooled. We are saved, and we have Tony Abbott and his removal of the evil carbon tax to thank. Congratulations to all the deniers who for year valiantly exposed the biggest conspiracy the world has ever seen. Your faith, and belief in God, won over those dirty communists. |

I'd like to know where all of these record high temperatures were because they were certainly weren't in my area and I live in part of Australia...
over the past 6 months (Victoria) I'd have to say its been below average as far as temperatures go... and a bit higher in rain fall compared to recent years... |

The problem is, we just don't have enough accurate data. Those who pray at the church of AGW believe that humans are contributing to global warming. Humans have been around for about 200,000 years. Therefore, at the very least, we would need to see accurate records that go back 400,000 years: 200,000 years before humans were here and 200,000 years of them inhabiting the Earth. |

Lack of accountability clouding the climate change debate January 3, 2014 John McLean The world's so-called authority on climate change engages in exaggerated science and has become a political tool. The reality is that the IPCC is in effect little more than a UN-sponsored lobby group, created specifically to investigate and push the ''man-made warming'' line. With no similar organisations to examine other potential causes of climate change, it's only the IPCC voice that is heard. But the IPCC's voice isn't heard in context and with all the necessary caveats; it's distorted via the UNFCCC and others who imply that the IPCC is the sole scientific authority on climate matters. Of course those with vested interest support it, which include governments, politicians, government bodies, ''green'' groups and many scientists. Ultimately it's the unquestioning media, or perhaps a media unwilling to admit that the UN and its agencies might be dishonest or wrong, that misleads the public into believing the IPCC is something it's not. John McLean is the author of three peer-reviewed papers on climate and an expert reviewer for the latest IPCC report. He is also a climate data analyst and a member of the International Climate Science Coalition. http://www.smh.com.au/comment/lack-of-accountability-clouding-the-climate-change-debate-20140102-307ja.html#ixzz2pHquzPEi |

These are the BoM temperature charts for 2013, plotted as deciles (tenths). The dark orange is the area where the temperatures were the highest on record. Note that the temperatures were not the highest on record in the whole of the country on any of the charts, but just in some of the country. Much of the country recorded temperatures that were in the top 10% (top decile).
The mean and maximum temperatures showed a greater tendency to be unusually high (top decile) than the minimum temperatures. annual maximum temperature deciles - 2013 annual mean temperature deciles - 2013 annual minimum temperature deciles - 2013 |

Wow - 1.2 degrees....
We're experiencing the coolest summer for a while and besides, I thought that regional differences didn't count...... Just saying... it always seems that the moment we get a heat patch it means global warming, but the moment we get a cool patch it doesn't mean global cooling... Sounds a bit selective to me..... especially when we've just come out of a drought cycle here, and we have more rain and overcast than normal, which will mean a warmer winter if it persists..... just saying... |

I tend to trust plants, birds and animals before I trust paid scientists.. and the average here has been lower... though winter was warmer due to more cloud cover. Same reason as summer is cooler - drought broken, more cloud cover and more rainy days..... Simple... altogether a relatively mild year 2013.. we had two frosts - a far cry from the -8 frosts of 2003.... in the middle of the drought.... while generally true, none of that changes the perception that where climate predictions are concerned, we are being lied to and lied to badly. BoM lies to us repeatedly telling us things that pollies and activists want to hear but some of which is transparently folly. NASA temperature recording is predictable in advance. in 2007 they reported that the year was cooler and showed a change in the direction of warming ie cooling. a few weeks later they changed their mind and said the diametrical opposite. So who do you trust? not NASA or BoM or Flannery or pretty much anyone who preaches the catastrophe that never comes. IM calling BoM liars. In a world where the laws of thermodynamics can be happily ignored to ply yet another fanciful warming fantasy science itself has sold its soul for ideology and the research funding trough. |

I don't have the skills or knowledge to usefully debate climate change with you and more importantly you don't have the skills or knowledge to disprove climate change (or more particularly, in your case, the projected catastrophic effects of climate change) in the face of what the overwhelming majority of expert climate scientists are telling us. So I do what any rational human being in the 21st century does. I accept what the experts tell me esp when (i) the consensus is as overwhelming as it is in the climate change debate and (ii) the stakes are as high as they are in the climate change debate. That's why I don't believe that you are genuine in your denial of climate change. Clearly you can have misgivings about what the experts are telling you. But to be so forthright and ardent about your position when you couldn't even possibly know where to begin to properly assess the evidence, tells me that there are other things at play here then what the truth of the matter might be. Esp when you insist like a school boy denied his favorite toy that "There is no evidence" when literally tons of evidence has been produced and continues to be produced in support of climate change; esp when you insist that "there is no consensus" when the consensus has remained overwhelming for almost a decade now; esp when you insist that "they must be lying for the funding" with no evidence to back that up beyond conjecture; and esp when you rely for your information and arguments on internet sites sponsored by fossil fuel industry that has much to lose if the world breaks its dependence on fossil fuels. Question the motives of the fossil fuel industry? Oh no you can't do that but how quick you are to accept that the expert scientists have conspired to dupe you for a relative pittance in extra funding. "Oh yeah that's the reason, that's why they're telling us all this BS, its for the funding". If I accept that you are a rational human being and I do then your approach to this issue leads me to the conclusion that you are not being truthful about what you really believe about climate change. |

A year has 12 months and Australia is a continent. You're also assuming that the tomatoes are "late", but for all you know this was probably normal 30 years ago. The BoM observations are based on temperature readings in the whole of the country, not when tomatoes ripen locally or the timing of the blooming of Jacaranda trees in your area. Quote:
The plants and animals don't know how to read a thermometer. They just feel hot or cold and act accordingly. Do crows have an opinion on whether Celsius or Fahrenheit is better? Conversely, BoM readings are from instruments, not tomatoes. In this case, they have taken the temperatures across the whole of the country (or those parts with weather stations, at least), added them up and announced that the average for the whole country was the highest recorded. That doesn't mean the average for every part of the country is the highest. You're also assuming that the average temperatures across the whole year and whole country must of necessity have a particular influence on the local behaviour of plants and animals in specific locations and at specific times. Do the tomatoes that were planted in September have any idea what happened the previous February? Quote:
Again, you're confusing local weather with continent-wide averages. Much of the continent is desert and this is where the most extreme effects were seen. In populated areas the effect was measurably less, perhaps highest decile in many cases but not the highest on record. I've posted it twice already without commenting on it. Here's the BoM map again. The dark orange is the area of the country where the average temperatures in 2013 were the highest on record. It covers only about 30% of the country. Most people here seem to have the misconception that "warmest on record" means that the whole country recorded the warmest temperatures on record. That's simply not true. Then we have people here who are remarking that their own particular dot on this great big map didn't get record high average temperatures, therefore they're not going to believe it. Averages don't work that way! Averages are calculated by adding up all the readings and dividing by the number of readings. In particular, it does not add up by the number of PEOPLE. Some populated areas might not have had such extremes but that does not mean that the country as a whole did not have a record high average. Take a look at the east coast strip in particular - few extremes and lots of people. Note the following points: (1) there are also weather stations in remote towns with a population that only gets to double digits if the dogs are counted, (2) most of the country is uninhabited desert, and (3) it is mostly in these remote parts of the country where the greatest extremes in average temperatures were seen. Take a look at the map again. The dark orange area of highest on record averages extends from western Queensland through SA towards southwestern WA. Not a lot of people live in these areas. |

Last year at the American Oil Producer Conference there was an interesting set of slides shown to the audience. 75% of the scientists proclaiming doomsday messages about human made climate impact are significant investors in projects which directly benefit from hysterical messages of change. In Wall St, if you give out messages which deliberately entice investment and benefit companies in which you are investors, you go to jail. It's called "stacking the deck". Think - Invest in alternative energy project + Give out deliberately alarmist message on climate change = Increased return and investment in your project. If we in the traditional energy sector do the same thing, we are hung out to dry. |

Physics.. It's plausible because certain gasses are known to act in certain ways. These things can be measured, tested, falsified if they are wrong, have you done that? Does anyone say that CO2 is not a GHG? Adding gasses to our atmosphere that are known GHGs are going to produce that effect. You don't need a lot of plutonium to poison someone, you don't need a lot of GHGs to change the balance of Earth climate. We know the GHG CO2 has been rising rapidly, now over 400ppm, and higher than it's been since our species has been around, higher than the last million years, how did it get that high? Is it natural(volcanoes?) or is the the fact we burn carbon based fuels? How do we know which carbon was combined with o2 to produce this CO2? There are many different carbon isotopes, when we test the carbon in CO2 we can know whether it's from wood, high c14, from old carbon, low c14 for example. It's not only plausible but probable. Why is Venus so damned hot? It's further from the Sun, less solar radiation. It's the atmosphere full of GHGs. |

A group of climate change scientists were rescued by helicopter Jan. 2, after being stranded in the ice since Christmas morning. But the majority of the broadcast networks’ reports about the ice-locked climate researchers never mentioned climate change. The Russian ship, Akademic Shokalskiy, was stranded in the ice while on a climate change research expedition, yet nearly 98 percent of network news reports about the stranded researchers failed to mention their mission at all. Forty out of 41 stories (97.5 percent) on the network morning and evening news shows since Dec. 25 failed to mention climate change had anything to do with the expedition. In fact, rather than point out the mission was to find evidence of climate change, the networks often referred to the stranded people as “passengers,” “trackers” and even “tourists,” without a word about climate change or global warming. Chris Turney, the expedition’s leader, is a professor of climate change at the University of New South Wales. According to Turney’s personal website, the purpose of the expedition is to “discover and communicate the environmental changes taking place in the south.” Twenty-two crew members stayed with the ship for the time being, as the scientists and researchers were rescued. According to CNN, the ship has enough supplies for “a very long time.” Three rescue attempts had been thwarted by growing levels of sea ice and weather conditions. "Outside, blizzard conditions packing an abnormal amount of ice in to the area for this time of the year, summer in the Antarctic," ABC News Correspondent Gio Benitez reported on “Good Morning America” Dec. 31. On Jan. 2, all 52 passengers were airlifted to a nearby Australian icebreaker ship which had tried, and failed, to plow through the ice and free the Akademic Shokalskiy, on Dec. 30. “Good Morning America” said on Dec. 30, that “the ice could be as thick as 13 feet.” According to Fox News, Turney admitted “we’re stuck in our own experiment.” They reported on Dec. 30, that a statement from the Australasian Antarctic Expedition said, “Sea ice is disappearing due to climate change, but here ice is building up.” There was only one news story out of 41 that mentioned climate change. That was CBS “This Morning” Dec. 30. “Despite being frozen at a standstill, the team’s research on climate change and Antarctic wildlife is moving forward,” CBS News Correspondent Don Dahler said. That night, all three evening news programs still failed to make any mention of the group’s climate change research. The MRC’s Business and Media Institute was unable to view a copy of CBS “Sunday Morning” for Dec. 29, so that broadcast had to be excluded from the tally. Before their ship got stuck in ice, the researchers were following the trail of the explorer Douglas Mawson, who was stranded in Antarctica for more than a year, beginning in December 1912, according to the website about the expedition. http://newsbusters.org/blogs/mike-ciandella/2014/01/02/frozen-out-98-stories-ignore-ice-bound-ship-was-global-warming-missi Frozen Out: 98% of Stories Ignore That Ice-bound Ship Was On Global Warming Mission By Mike Ciandella | January 2, 2014 | 12:43 |

Andrei, You have fallen for a gross simplification. On Mars, the biggest warming effect comes from dust. As far as the "solar" influence is concerns, the dust storms cause the surface to darken in certain areas leading to more evaporation of volatiles. There is no evidence that Mars is warming at the "exactly the same rate" as the Earth, and the solar output measurements don't show an increase over the past 50 years. Mars has a very chaotic climate compared to the Earth, and that is partially caused by the fact that the obliquity of its orbit is the primary consideration for determining the heat that it obtains from the sun, and the fact that the Northern and Summer seasons are precessing with respect to the perihelion and aphelion. As I said, very chaotic, very complex and an entirely different kettle of fish compared with the Earth. |

The aim of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, led by Chris Turney of the University of NSW, was to prove the East Antarctic ice sheet is melting. Its website spoke alarmingly of "an increasing body of evidence" showing "melting and collapse from ocean warming". Instead, rescue ships and a helicopter, all belching substantial carbon emissions, have had to be mobilised to pluck those aboard the icebreaker MV Akademik Schokalskiy from their plight, stuck in what appears to be, ironically, record amounts of ice for this time of year. In that lies a hard lesson for those who persistently exaggerate the impact of global warming. We believe in man-made climate change and are no less concerned than others about it. But the cause of sensible policy is ill-served by exaggeration; there is a need for recognition of the science, which shows there are variations in how climate is changing and what the impact is, or will be. Professor Turney's expedition was supposed to repeat scientific investigations made by Douglas Mawson a century ago and to compare then and now. Not unreasonably, it has been pointed out Mawson's ship was never icebound. Sea ice has been steadily increasing, despite the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's gloomy forecasts. Had the expedition found the slightest evidence to confirm its expectation of melting ice caps and thin ice, a major new scare about the plight of the planet would have followed. As they are transferred to sanctuary aboard the icebreaker Aurora Australis, Professor Turney and his fellow evacuees must accept the embarrassing failure of their mission shows how uncertain the science of climate change really is. They cannot reasonably do otherwise. apology accepted in advance... :) ;D |

There is a difference between consensus based on the opinion of self-styled experts, or appeal to authority (320 ex- NASA Geriatrics can't be wrong) and a conclusion based on the bulk of evidence based on properly researched papers that can be verified.
The type of consensus we're talking about is the latter - evidence based consensus as opposed to "feeling in my bones" consensus. |

I think it was Vuk who first posted that graph here. It was taken up by the Daily Mail in England, but it was put together by a blogger. The main problem with these graphs is that they conveniently leave out the grey bits - the error bars. |

Right, the orginal source of that graph was a climate scientist in Reading, UK called Ed Hawkins. The graph was redrawn and misrepresents the original data.

Give up, greggerypeccary. You posted fabricated "quotes", greggerypeccary. When challenged, you tried to cover up your fabrications, greggerypeccary. Then you tried to cover up your cover-ups, greggerypeccary. You continue lying but, guess what, greggerypeccary? Nobody believes you, greggerypeccary. |

With pathological liars like greggerypeccary, truth lies less in what they say than in what they refuse to say. So what has greggerypeccary revealed?

Refusal to address the issue of the probability that the vast majority of the best qualified and every organisation of reputable scientists is wrong*, reveals that greggerypeccary's belief has no basis beyond faith. Losing the debate, greggerypeccary tried to distract. In the process, he gave convincing evidence that denial of the significance of majority in science is based on fabrication, supported by the disreputable. |

The onus is on you. Sorry. "If memory serves, you once said to me that you have "no scientific faith". Nope: that's a lie. You are a liar. No such statement by me exists. The onus is now on you to substantiate your assertion. |

Yeh, f'n heat is heat! The ipcc reports are necessarily conservative as all involved must agree to what is included! Everything is(or more properly, can be thought of as..) systems and systems, over time, tend toward disintegration. Big money knows you just attack and the confusion lasts for a long time. Unbelievably, however, Gary Kasparov wrote how the laws of thermodynamics say that a less organised system will lose more energy in manouvre than a more organised system Big energy won't be able to handle the cloud debate: ask andrei for sources and his strategic gap will be seen as bigger than that of earth to heaven! The fascists from planet accountant have no plan: socialism allows them to exist... :D |
