Gee wow, one boat in a matter of weeks. Lets all hit the panic button. No, hang on! That might be a bit hasty. I seem to recall a time when we were getting 2-3 boats a day. Oh yeah, that's right - it was the norm under Labor over the previous 6 years!

No, I've come to the conclusion that asylum seekers are just as over seeing morrisons jerk off sessions every Friday as the rest of us, and probably hope that if they don't come he'll eventually stop showing his ugly mug on tv.

Or perhaps the reduction has come not only from png solution but also from the fact barely anyone is left in Syria, or that Indonesia has cracked down on visa for Iranians, or the fact that Sri Lanka has increased security on Tamils fleeing.

Sounds fair, tis a complex problem and will require multiple inputs.  The Labor PNG solution is a big part of those inputs.  Labor always go hard on country shoppers and good on them, much harder than those softcock liberals.  8-) 8-)

Yes, leftards, but they are stopping, they are stopping, and they will be stopped, you have to admit that. Only Mr Abbott can stop the boats. Say what you’ll do and do what you say, that’s Mr Abbott’s motto. Under-promise and over-deliver. Sensible, reliable, stable, predictable, honest and trustworthy government, steady as she goes, the grown-ups back in charge.

And thank heavens for that.

Fact Check consulted two researchers from the University of Queensland who specialise in data analysis, Dr Angela Higginson and Jason Ferris. They modelled the data and concluded that: "There has been a statistically significant reduction in the number of arrivals since the Coalition took Government... But it sits as part of a trend in reductions of arrivals that began with the last government. So in short, Mr Morrison is right, but he's not taking context into account."

The researchers say the comparison period of before and after Operation Sovereign Borders used by Mr Morrison misses the point, "because this trend began back in July and there is no sign that the election of the Abbott Coalition Government has had any impact on arrivals whatsoever".

They say over the past five years, there have been several changes in the trend of asylum seeker arrivals, the most recent change being in July 2013, "but that there is no evidence of any further change in trend since the election

Sri Lanka has already stated it will accept every boat person coming from there as economic illegal migrants.
We should take them up on their offer.

Worth noting Bob Carr congratulated Sri Lanka on the huge steps taken since the civil war and declared it safe following his visit.

What did your pm, Cameron, have to say about Sri Lanka?

But no you're right, let's listen to the government that is the one with human rights violations hanging over it's head for abusing and killing the very same people that are trying to flee.

Sri Lanka is an ally of Australia in the war on terror.

I myself work with a Sri Lankan who says pretty much the same thing about how those arriving into Australia are mere economic migrants wanting a better life.
They aren't fleeing anything at all.

I'd take a knowledge of a guy from there than yours, mine or even Dangerous Dave's.

"SIEV".   Hmmm.

That's an ADF term, isn't it?

The ADF says it stands for: " ... suspected irregular entry vessel ... ".

http://www.defence.gov.au/siev36/

What about the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service?  What do they say about that little acronym?

Let's have a look, shall we?

Here we go:  "SIEV - Suspect Irregular Entrant Vessel"

http://www.customs.gov.au/webdata/minisites/annualreport0809/pages/page85.html

Hmmm    :-/

Perhaps you should start calling the boats "irregulars".

Well it is refreshing to see you both arguing for the other side for once, just a couple of things.

1. the term under the previous government was "irregular maritime arrivals"
2. the term was recently changed by the current government to "illegal maritime arrivals"
3. Asylum seekers are not committing any crime despite what their entry is called, irregular or illegal

Your definition of 'SIEV' is irrelevant for three very clear reasons.

1. it refers to boats, not people

2. it deems the boats irregular, not illegal

3. it's 2014

That's for the passengers of the boats, not the boats themselves.

Andrei is talking about the term used by the ADF for the actual boats - SIEVs.

And SIEV, today, stands for "Suspected Irregular Entry Vessel".

Andrei seems to be living in the past.

And you are correct, the passengers are not committing any crime.

"Irregular" changed from "illegal", lol. By the stroke of a pen it completely changes the perspective of the legislation. Perhaps they can just change it again to "idiot" or "illogical". After all, if it's embedded in law how can it be wrong, eh "progressives"?

Don't bother, sparky suffers the same disease as the rest of the loony conservatives and it prevents him from processing information properly.

That's why you'll hear from him at times that it's about deaths at sea. But other times it's about stopping people smugglers.  But then it's because all asylum seekers arriving by boat are economic migrants?  And do you know how he knows this?  Because a people smuggler said once that they tell asylum seekers how to talk to our immigration department.  It's similar to you know, a footy team that's on top of the ladder no longer needing to train as otherwise they would be cheating.  Sparky just can't assess information and make logical conclusions.  But not his fault, it's the loony conservative disease.

The truth is, for sparky any excuse will do.  Because it's not about deaths, or people smuggling, or economic migrants.  No,  it's not even about "queue jumping."  It's quite simply fear. And this fear means any excuse will do and any bit of news that may justify the fear by the slightest is above all else fact.

Quite sad, really.

Yawn. The whole thing is a political football for the "progressives' as well. They're no different in this respect. For example, the deaths at sea are down and the boats have slowed. But you're all still whining about Abbott and Morrison.

Obviously, you're an idiot. An absolute, breathtakingly stupid imbecile. I don't recall a single one of Abbott's speeches in which he gave a deadline for when he would stop the boats by. That's because he never did. He said he would stop the boats and they are stopping. Since becoming PM, he has overseen a dramatic reduction in the number of boat arrivals in a very short period of time - something Labor was simply incapable of. At its worst, Labor was getting more than one boat a day much of the time, whereas now we are lucky if we see more than 2-3 boats in a week. Have the boats completely stopped? No. Are the boats coming at the same frequency or higher than under Labor? No, not even close. Boat arrivals have reduced by more than 70% in the first 2-3 months of Abbott's term. That's another thing - we're only a few months into Abbott's term, so I think that he is entitled to a bit of time to get his policies working, especially given the blocking of legislation that shows Labor just wants him to fail because for him to succeed would be too embarrassing! Given these FACTS, your absurd and incorrect conclusion that Abbott has failed serves only to demonstrate what a colossal moron you are. Grow up. >:(

LOL,  people smugglers and country shoppers both say that they are coached, a govt report says that they are coached.  Those statistics are rubbish and unreliable.  It is obvious to anyone who has the wit to connect that fact that people smugglers are coaching country shoppers.

I was addressing the 90% statistic.  Why they lie is another matter.  I can think of many reasons why they do, and not all those reasons include fleeing persecution.

I really cannot make it any simpler for you than that.

Yeah about that rational and critical thinking, Data...

asylum seekers pay people smugglers thousands of dollars to get them to Australia. They want value for money, and the smugglers want satisfied customers. Just like any other business model.. right? So the smugglers provide them with an attractive service that will give them the best chance of being accepted. This includes "coaching". It doesn't mean they are not genuine refugees, but it does mean they have the nous to understand the virtue of playing the system as best they can.

Anyone would do exactly the same in that position - whether or not they are genuine or not. Your argument neither proves nor disproves them being genuine. Please actually use that rational and critical thought you claim you possess.

I agree, it has never been my position that country shoppers are stupid people at the mercy of wind and tides.  I consider them intelligent and resourceful.   I give little brown people more credit than a lot of lefties.

And it is true,  I cannot prove they are genuine or not, but I can demonstrate that greggorys much loved 90% is unreliable and worthless as a statistic.

As to why they lie and rely on coached stories,  again, unknowable, suffice to say if they were genuine there would be no need for reliance on coached stories.  Having said that, if I was a country shopper, I would go for the story that works as well.   8-)

Good one - lets all start using the Occupy movement as our source of intelligent, well-researched information.

You actually believe what the government is (not) telling you.

Why does that not come as a surprise?

Nope.

The figures are provided by the government, and published in official Department of Immigration reports.

I have posted for you before evidence that people smugglers say they coach people in stories to tell and that country shoppers say they use those stories.

If you cannot recall then I suggest you see a doctor, because your memory is shot, but I suspect you do recall, but because it doesn't fit your narrative or agenda you prefer to ignore evidence that the barrier tests are being circumvented.

That sort of wilful ignorance I cannot help you with sorry.  8-)

And again Data, this proves nothing about whether they are genuine or not.  For the amount of asylum seekers you have shown to be anything other than genuine, the number very well could be correct.

I've provided an official government report demonstrating that my figures are accurate.

There never WAS a "carbon tax"

There WAS a FIXED PRICE on carbon - as "roll in" to an EMMISSIONS TRADING SCHEME - for a period of one year*

( ... the SAME ETS model proposed by the first Rudd Government

... the SAME ETS model proposed by the HOWARD Government)

* ... this one year period was re-negotiated to THREE YEARS - with the Greens and independents - as a condition of passing ETS legislation

The tag "carbon tax" was applied to the interim fixed price by the media and opposition

( ... not that this clarification will sink in ... as Tony Abbott can't tell the difference between a carbon tax and an ETS, I doubt his supporters can)

LOL,  people smugglers and country shoppers both say that they are coached, a govt report says that they are coached.  Those statistics are rubbish and unreliable.  It is obvious to anyone who has the wit to connect that fact that people smugglers are coaching country shoppers.

they are coached to the extent that they are told what to say so as to claim asylum and  so that they are not thrown on the first plane out of here ... they are not coached in how to bypass the checks that the government does after that point ... what do people smugglers care if they are ultimately refused?

In fact, it works in their favour if they are sent back because the person being refused may try again and hand over another $10 000. No one without ID is approved if the govt. hasn't had an independant 3rd party confirm who they are .... in fact they cannot send them back without evidence of their real identities because the country they send them back to will in most cases refuse to take them back if you cannot prove they are originally from there

Yes, you did. You also said he has failed. If he'd said he would stop the boats by a given date and they had not stopped, then you'd be correct. However, he gave no deadline for stopping the boats, so one can safely assume he expects to stop them before the end of his first term in office. That means he has a lot more time to actually stop the boats. That means you're wrong - he has not failed in this policy. They have slowed dramatically, however, much to your obvious disgust. You won't be happy until they're arriving at 2-3 boats a day and thousands of people are dying at sea again, as was the case under Labor. It irks you greatly that Abbott is succeeding where Rudd/Gillard failed spectacularly. That's simply disgraceful, even for you.

You just love shooting yourself in the foot, eh? How much business do you reckon those people smugglers would get if their customers were reported in the media as having their request for asylum rejected almost straight away and being deported? It's in the interests of their "business" to provide as much advice/assistance as they can for their customers to ultimately succeed so that they will gain more customers. Yes, would-be illegal immigrants do watch the news and read the papers! ;)

I suspect that the budget will be his best opportunity to stop the boats once and for all. He can announce the closure of the many fairy run. He can then claim to his followers that the red neck peninsula is finally safe from the western bogans.

BTW your immature and thoughtless comments about people dying at sea are disgraceful and a childish attempt at political point scoring.  The almost gleeful attitude of some of the right on here using deaths of people to make a cheap point shows their shallowness.

So Tony hasn't stopped the boats - as he promised during his election Mantra?    No one gives a crap about Labor, they are not in government.   The Coalition are, and a key cornerstone of their election commitment was to stop the boats.  They have obviously failed.   When are you Roids going to start holding this pathetic government to account for lies and failed promises?

Grow up. >:(

thanks for the personal abuse - but if you read my post I said that Tony had promised to stop the boats.  I merely pointed out that he hasn't. I hope you get a trip to the banned bin

No, I just don't like the ability Tony seems to have to fool most of his followers.   He hasn't stopped the boats, he and his ministers have backflipped on just about every decision they have made, Bishop and Abbott have made us look fools on the world stage, but you Roids hang in there hoping they will improve - well, sorry, they won't

BTW your immature and thoughtless comments about people dying at sea are disgraceful and a childish attempt at political point scoring.  The almost gleeful attitude of some of the right on here using deaths of people to make a cheap point shows their shallowness.
Labor and the Greens did play a massive part in those deaths at sea. They wouldn't of happened if they didn't start people smuggling up again.

So, the installation of the Coalition Government has solved the problem?

Noting the last months of the Rudd govenment basically reinstated Howard's policies (with the exception of TPVs) why are the Coalition EXPANDING the detention centres at Nauru and Manus?  Isn't Operation Soveriegn borders supposed to negate this need?  Why is Abbott allowing our ACPBs to enter Indonesian waters to rescue people?   According to the right on here, they should be just left to drown

It all boils down to the fact that when in Opposition, you can make all the promises you want and the gullible will vote for you.  Once in Government though, it is a different story.   Many of the rusted on right on here still believe the Coalition is doing a great job - one day, I am sure they will wake up very dissapointed.

I just found it funny you knocking some poor bugger that has nothing to do with the deaths while bypassing all the Labor and Greens politicians that  caused it. Do you admit that Labor border control amendment (with help from the Greens) caused the death of thousands of people.

Rudd went to the people in 2007 with a promise to reinstate on shore processing.  He won and did that.   There were push and pull factors associated with a large increase in asylum seekers to Australia - I am sure not even Rudd could have projected such a large increase.

Rudd should have acted much earlier than he did.  But it is true people died trying to get to Australia just as people are still drowning.     So, a change in Governemnt has done little to stem the flow and the unfortunate deaths.

Regrettably, some of the right on here seem to orgasm in blaming Labor for anyone who dies - regardless of the circumstances in which that happened (roof insulation for instance)

There are 8 ACPB, two major warships (equipped with state of the art detection equipment), JORN, Customs and Border Protection platforms, and a couple of leased civilian ships up North at the moment - and still the boats come and the drownings continue.

This is happening under the Coalition Soverign Borders Policy, so what is your answer?  And please don't consider asking Indonesia to help - Bishop already blew that option!

I also find it amusing when I hear posters on here bashing the Greens.      Part of Abbott's election mantra was no dealing with the greens - and yet Hockey ran to them cap in hand when he needed to get legislation through the Senate.   Greens and the Coalition - best buddies now.

Yes because in the process of stopping the deaths Of country shoppers in a bid to stop people smuggling, wank and his right hand are continuing systematic abuse of Genuine asylum seekers for political gain.

As a progressive my objective is clear.  I want my country to ensure people don't risk their lives via people smuggling not through deterring those people, but through 1) processing them and 2) helping end the conflicts.

And I don't go out trying to find 101 reasons to keep the fear.  Like datalife, with his "critical" analysis.  Apparently if you get advice, help, "coaching" if you will, it instantly makes you a country shopper.  ;D. Same in any aspect of life.  Footballers are no longer footballers as they get coached.

I suspect that the budget will be his best opportunity to stop the boats once and for all. He can announce the closure of the many fairy run. He can then claim to his followers that the red neck peninsula is finally safe from the western bogans.

It irks you greatly that Abbott is succeeding where Rudd/Gillard failed spectacularly. That's simply disgraceful, even for you.

How many may have been avoided were the Abbott opposition not making sure that there was no solution for as long as possible ???

Abbott did not stop the Malaysian non-solution, the full bench of the High Court did. Don't blame Abbott for Labor's incompetence on this issue. They had the numbers in both houses to do as they pleased. The Rudd & Gillard governments failed spectacularly in this regard.

Abbott originally offered to assist in changing the legislation but then reneged on his commitment.

The sri Lankans come here to work, no doubt the majority are economic migrants.i would prefer them anytime to the middle easterners with zero work ethic. We all know the arabs come here to breed kids and go on the dole. We know their women don't work because they arent allowed to. Ever get behind one of these arab people at an atm on dole payment day? Wait at least 5 minutes while they check any number of accounts to make sure their payments are in.

i think the thing that the average suburbanite (ie the 12 million average australians who determine election results) finds peculiar about this issue is the following.

we have many many do-gooders who seem to be sprouting all these messages of concern and weeping tears about "drownings at sea' and 'human suffering'. that in itself would probably be acceptable if it werent for the following....

your average suburbanite sees single mums with no support from the community struggling to get their kids educated and off to school
your average suburbanite sees divorced dads with no money doing hard labour and trying to care for kids on weekends with no community support.
your average suburbanite sees elderly people with disease struggling to do their activities of daily living with no community support or encouragement.
your average suburbanite sees kids with anxiety disorders, kids living in abusive homes, lonely people, people with addictions, people who are close to breakdown, people who cant pay their mortgages.

they see ALL THIS SUFFERING which is very real to them and pervades their world and then they see the absolute MONUMENTAL ammount of outpouring of compassion (in words anyway ;)) from the politicians and the journalists and the army of hand wringers, and they say

wheres my share of your compassion.??

until this situation is rectified and some balance restored, assylum seekers will continue to get little sympathy out in voter heartland, and rightly so, they are certainly getting the lions share from the "compassion talkfest wanker brigade"

Yeah I'm sure the article clearly stating that Bob Carr was tlaking out his arse was clearly "some do-gooder backed by some Labor".

Systematic abuse eh? Free food, free shelter, free clothes, free medical, with the prospect of living in Australia. Yep, sounds like your regular Auschwitz.

The statistics I refer to say that after five years only 9% are in full time employment and thats because they are all a bunch of useless bludgers and layabouts that have come here to retire on centrelink and they are being ably assisted by the left to do just that because the left does not give a flying f#ck how many fake reffos come here to retire on centrelink.

We seem to know a lot and have little doubt.
I do my shopping in a high density reffo area. I observe what is around me. I have a lot of time for the African immigrants, despite their high crime rate I have noticed that they readily assimilate and appreciate their opportunity in this country. I see a lot of them male and female employed in the service occupations, supermarkets, security guards, fast food restaurants, etc. I have respect for people prepared to work hard to get somewhere. Cant say the same about middle easterners, their women don't work and appear to be little more than baby making machines and the males rarely have a legitimate occupation, you certainly rarely see them working in a service related role.
