Title: ENOUGH
Post by dsmithy70 on Dec 28th, 2013 at 8:47am
So over this festive season I've read report Australians have spent 29.6 Billion $$$ on gifts

http://finance.ninemsn.com.au/newsbusiness/aap/8760421/australia-to-spend-29-6-billion-over-xmas

Another 1.9 billion $$$ on boxing day sales

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/newslocal/news/boxing-day-sales-set-to-hit-an-alltime-record-this-year/story-fngr8gwi-1226789909928

And although I cannot find a link have heard we also spent 11 billion $$$ on Christmas Food

Totaling 42.5 Billion $$$

That's $1847.82 for each of our 23 million citizens.

So in 2014 I don't want to read here or in any newspaper, hear any mealy mouthed pollie cry that Australians are struggling with the cost of living, cannot afford a few measly $$ to fund the NDIS or that the Carbon Tax is forcing the large majority to freeze in Winter, that families need the compensation to remain if the tax is repealed.

BECAUSE FRANKLY IT'S BULLSH!T >:(

It's obviously not how much Australians bring home but what they choose to spend it on.

Time for a very large proportion of our populace to get some tough love & re-prioritize their spending.

I'm a grinch it seems. I have spent more over the last week but only because we have two sons back for christmas, maybe an extra 200 with food/beer etc. If I only spent an extra 200, some people have a lot of money to waste if that is the average. No COL problems for some.

You should have tried harder and got yourself a better education so you could get a reasonable job then, most  do not have to save for three years to pay bills. It is not our fault you did not make a better life for yourself.

It's not unusual for chinese students to get a brand new BMW for christmas.  By the looks of it, they also do the bulk of the spending at the boxing day sales too.

Also, how the bugger do they calculate 11 billion on "christmas food".  Wonder how that compares to any other period, since we have to eat all year round.

Not at all

In fact I'm here more often than not arguing for those at the bottom to be given a fair go.

However most of our liberal posters seem to think a family on 200K need assistance with Private health, Child care etc.

As I said to LW a couple of days ago 80K for a single & 150K for a couple should be the cut off point for ALL government assistance.

That way we ALL end up paying less tax & the tax that we do pay will be used the way it was intended

Like I said I heard it on an AM interview & cannot find references.

How they calculate it would be to look at the food spend in say Aug then the food spend in Dec Minus Aug from Dec

well that's my layman's idea.

It isn't the cost of living that people will complain about, it the cost of lifestyle, but they will blame the cost of living.

You can see it coming can't afford to go out and eat 4 or 5 times a month instead of stopping home to eat. Can't afford the oversea holiday next year instead of having a holiday in Australia for a change. Can't afford the new 4K TV the 60 inch TV they brought 2 years ago will have to do them. (I am not have a go at you smithy) Can't afford the new I pad or I phone in 6 months time, the one they got for Xmas will have to do them.

So it is the cost of lifestyle that they complain about not the cost of living. Do you ever see a low income earner complain cost of lifestyle because they can't keep up with the Jones

Those figures sound mighty fishy to me - I'll be a lot of that 1286 or whatever was buying groceries and stuff... I certainly didn't spend that much..

It's actually the other way around.

They go overseas because holidaying in Aus is a rip off.

Every year I say to myself I'm going to holiday in Aus & every year I can get better value & experience a different culture(not to mention I like collecting stamps in my passport) for the same money or even sometimes a little cheaper.

And before it happens no its not just because places have to pay their staff a liveable wage.

Quick expedia search

Syd to Hamilton Is 19th to 26th Jan flights & room = $1287 per person or $1702 p/p

Syd to Singapore same dates flights & room(comparable hotel) = $1318 p/p ( The Swissotel center of town)

So, even though it not a boarding house, which has it's own definition, it's people sharing a house your statement stands? Her parents paid for her to come study here, she flew home about a week ago, my son is flying over in Jan, he's a programmer(Software Engineer if you like). Yep an accountant and a programmer would live in a doss house in Canberra. See the level of disingenuousness in your response? You try to belittle. It's obviously not how much Australians bring home but what they choose to spend it on.

Time for a very large proportion of our populace to get some tough love & re-prioritize their spending.

Not everyone can afford a ps4 and 60 inch TV for christmas.  Those that can drag these averages up.

Yes, 12% of Australia lives under poverty.  But the conversation, the crying that it's all too hard, it never seems to come from them. But rather, as dsmithy rightly points out, from those who CAN afford their ps4 and 60 inch TV, and then still go out and whine that the utility price is too high.  Enough is enough. It is time for some tough love, so that we can actually reprioritize towards those things that ACTUALLY matter (ie: 12% poverty line).

dsmithy, wait a few days, they'll have a story on how much of that $11billiuon in food is WASTED, thrown out!  Happens every year.

It's difficult finding the time to complain when every waking moment is occupied with brute survival while weighed down by stress and despair. The unemployed are lied to incessantly about employment opportunities, exploited, savagely and unjustly discriminated against, do endless battles with the Centrelink bureaucracy and experience real hardship. It doesn't help that they cannot improve their lot due to the endless banshee whining from self-entitled greedy farks who are far too selfish and greedy to sacrifice a few hours and $100 a week in employment income so others can find meaningful employment or $5 a week in tax so Newstart can be increased to grinding poverty levels. The so-called "fair go" is a myth.

For less than half that, we can increase Newstart by $50 a week for all recipients ($2b) and provide basic dental care for the disadvantaged ($1b). It's not as if we as a nation can't afford to help. Instead it's considered better use of money to buy a big turkey and ham for Christmas just to impress the family, only to throw it out a few days later with much of it uneaten and wasted. It is a sad indictment on our country that throwing out food is considered less wasteful than increasing taxation by a modest amount to fund needed expenditure.

Watching the news report on the boxing day sales, my attention was caught by a couple of 20-somethings gleefully telling the reporter that they were there to max their cards out and would probably spend around $3000 on clothes & makeup.

My first thought was - geez girls, have a thought about next year.
My next thought was - go for it darlings, whatever you spend it on I'll probably make a few bucks from it on the stockmarket.

My first thought was - geez girls, have a thought about next year.
My next thought was - go for it darlings, whatever you spend it on I'll probably make a few bucks from it on the stockmarket.

If most people can piss away $3000 on frivolous stuff like this, it's difficult to defend the proposition that Australians cannot afford an increase to taxes to get the budget back in balance.

Time for a very large proportion of our populace to get some tough love & re-prioritize their spending.

you presume the figures are true...  family of 6 having spent nearlt $12,000????  not only do I not believe it, I find it near impossible.  When my kids were young and I was earning triple the annual wage I spent lavishly on Christmas and yet never went anywhere near that amount so what does the average income earner spend?

this feels like an estimate based on a guess which is extrapolated from a few sotres in Toorak and the north shore.

Not everyone can afford a ps4 and 60 inch TV for christmas.  Those that can drag these averages up.

You don't see me crying poor either.

Oh & not that it's any of your business but the 60 inch telly took me 2 years to save for.

about 10 years ago I paid $5000 for a big screen TV which the nearest equivalent now can be had for $600... and its hi-def.

all it all... don't invest in tech

I don't have a problem with that as long as the largesse for everyone else is severely curtailed as well.  cut welfare dramatically, period.  then cut income taxes etc in response and watch the economy take a rise as spending increases on the back of extra income.

I raised 4 kids on the back of next to no govt welfare and they didn't suffer.

There's a difference between wealthfare and welfare.  Remove all wealth fare.  Then start to cut taxes from bottom up when circumstances allow it.

No problem as long as health & education are not touched.

Super earning over 200K being tax free
5 billion to private health companies
4 billion to miners

You know that won't happen.  They'll cry poor and claim they'll need to cut jobs.  And then spend millions on ad campaigns and we will be right back where we started.  Apparently markets should be left to their own devices as long as government subsidies them.

This is why governments should NEVER subsidise private industry,  all that happens is artificial influx and their subsidies get sucked up into extra profit that companies become accustomed to.  But hey, Howard was terrific.

My electricity bills have remain unchanged for a couple of years now. You should have signed up to one of the deals the electricity co's were offering. I got a 17% discount for two years and became a little more diligent with my power usage.

The electricity suppliers have suggested that when the carbon tax goes - our bills might not be reduced. If you're unemployed or on a low income - the previous government was subsidising you for the increase. This won't continue - so when the tax is repealed, you'll be a lot worse off.

No problem as long as health & education are not touched.

If he really wants to impress me he can start with all the crap Howard brought in for those I sighted in the above post.

Super earning over 200K being tax free
5 billion to private health companies
4 billion to miners

Are all worth losing if a surplus is what you base success on.

the problem with that is that you assume there are no consequences to that.  Just as Rudd in his well-intentioned stupidity assumed that changing the FBT rules would simply raise money and not affect sales or the leasing industry or damage the car industry.

that's the problem with the 'bright ideas' on here- that they assume nothing will be affected.

But hey, Howard was terrific.

nice principle as long as EVERYONE does it.  but they don't.  and sometimes by not subsidising all you do is end up with no industry at all.  not exactly a success.

This won't continue - so when the tax is repealed, you'll be a lot worse off.

that's why you need a Costello type in parliament.  when the state govts were refusing to cut state taxes as promised for the GST, he threatened them with cuts to the GST and then some.  Jockey needs to do the same to power companies.  when the carbon tax comes off the prices need to be reduced or else he will penalise them in some other fashion.  He has the power of the position as well as the power of being right.  Use it.

I agree with the first part, re: misinterpreting posts, although I would suggest that it goes much further than posts - and whilst it might relate to IQ (the laughable intelligence measuring scale) and poor education, it simply boils down to blatant lack of comprehension (either deliberate or learned).

In short whilst you name names and, in particular, target one specific "side" of the political arena, the above link demonstrates exactly that it is not a one sided issue (firstly) and secondly, by the list you offer, demonstrates that you are looking to score ideological points rather than make any kind of insightful commentary. Well, firstly, I have been disagreeing with him. I only agreed with the first part of his comment, i.e. comprehension is an issue on this forum because, quite frankly, it is. I just notice that it occurs regardless of ideology and not (seemingly at least) because of it. Ergo, no one is safe, lol....

I don't know what to do about the link, I am tried reposting the link but it didn't work again.

http://www.ozpolitic.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1380263025/0 - hmmm, maybe this will (if I got it right this time...)

If not, it was a thread titled "Abbot turns first boat back" - which was completely refuted by the link posted in the OP by the same poster who made up the title... Comprehension issue?

Are all worth losing if a surplus is what you base success on.

But hey, Howard was terrific.

nice principle as long as EVERYONE does it.  but they don't.  and sometimes by not subsidising all you do is end up with no industry at all.  not exactly a success.

So then you're basically admitting that free markets are a con, because industry can't survive without government injection? A bit of welfare for the company?

Whatever happened to economics 101 where businesses provide a service or product, offer a value proposition, and then generate revenue from that which leads to a profit for them? If they don't have the right value proposition then perhaps their management shouldn't be paid the millions that it is and instead should go back to the drawing board.  Quite simply, enough of this nonsense that somehow they can only survive through government injection. All government injection does is raise their funds in the first year, and then what? Then it's there for life.

If they want bail outs, that's a different story.  Put a proper cost-benefit proposal to the government on a bail out strategy, and if it is sound, guarantees money back to the tax payer, and if it provides benefit to the tax payer, then do it. Otherwise, fold.

It seems that this whole idea of cohesive society, role of government and the tax dollar has gone complete hay wire.   Just like businesses, people shouldn't be expecting to have their tax dollar give them some sort of subsidy back for some private service. The value proposition with the tax dollar has always been for government to provide necessary social and economic infrastructure, public services, welfare for those falling into the safety net or on the pension, and defence.  That is it. Enough of this wanting more and more and more, and wanting to pay less and less and less. What joke.  And then some dare to even make the argument of "individualism"...

I hear the Pilbara port is going to close for a few days due to the cyclone. Will Gina et al need some funding because they'll lose a few million as a result? poor fellas.

Time for a very large proportion of our populace to get some tough love & re-prioritize their spending.

If most people can piss away $3000 on frivolous stuff like this, it's difficult to defend the proposition that Australians cannot afford an increase to taxes to get the budget back in balance.

the assumption that there is even a connection is ridiculous. just as is the silly assumption that they are typical.  and even worse is the typical left-wing viewpoint that if people have money to waste then it should be taken off them so that he govt can waste it instead.

The only ridiculous thing is that you think this is a coherent argument. Your argument is about as coherent as an explosion in a spaghetti factory. And as usual, you offer no proof, just vague mumblings.

That's right Skippy....
I haven't been able to buy anything decent for 3 years because after saving up to pay all my utility bills there is nothing left over for something decent....  not what you've been saying right Scribbler..? :D :D :D

You said It took me 3 years to save up to pay a utility bill.  NOT THE SAME THING AT ALL YA LYING MORON!
For goodness sake... I do get sick of correcting your idiocy and lies.  ::) ::) ::)

Oh and Aussie you idiot...  I was replying to Crowbait, get an adult to explain what it means if necessary...  obviously it will be ::)

misinterpreting posts is common on here largely because of the low IQ and poor education of so many (eg john smith, pansi, greesn_snot etc).  but skippy is one of the worst.

I agree with the first part, re: misinterpreting posts, although I would suggest that it goes much further than posts - and whilst it might relate to IQ (the laughable intelligence measuring scale) and poor education, it simply boils down to blatant lack of comprehension (either deliberate or learned).

Oh, and you and many of your ideological mates also are well qualified, demonstrably, for that list of people.

Just saying   ;)

poor comprehension is perhaps the worst.  you have the john smith type who seems simply unable to comprehend a post unless every point is articulated in excruciating detail, skippy who seems to lack the cranial horsepower and the worst is green-dumbo who deliberately misinterprets every post and if that still doesn't work, simply lies.

The intelligent posters are relatively rare.

It took some finding but here is a link that absolutely highlights the comprehension issue, but, even worse it demonstrates a blatant refusal by many to even read links when posted....

Oh, it is noteworthy that the main offenders in this link are NOT actually on your list too.

In short whilst you name names and, in particular, target one specific "side" of the political arena, the above link demonstrates exactly that it is not a one sided issue (firstly) and secondly, by the list you offer, demonstrates that you are looking to score ideological points rather than make any kind of insightful commentary. Not that there is anything wrong with that (apparently).

your link doesn't work

little experiment for you, Phemanderac., if you want to try ... disagree with longie on something and $100 says sooner or later he will run away calling you stupid or questioning your IQ.
