Title: New GG - but what is the cost of a Republic?
Post by Maqqa on Dec 26th, 2013 at 8:41am
General Peter Cosgrove is tipped to be the next GG

My question is - if Australia was to become a Republic - what is the cost of changing everything over?

It's like changing from Android to Apple

It all depends...do u want to stay subservient to a foreign power or do you want to be a part of a totally independent country?
Ask the Americans if the war of independence was worth the cost.

The cost of servitude compared to the price of freedom..

Im a Republican and a proud Australian patriot through and through so I'll leave the sniveling and grovelling to their English masters to one term tony and his cheer squad.

If anyone would rather swear their allegiance to a foreign power rather than to this country they should go to the airport and leave.

Maybe Australia becoming a Republic would be more akin to an Android becoming a Hemorrhoid..... ;D

The constitutional monarchy, the GG and the flag.
All perfectly fine and a complete and total waste of money to change.

I have BARE ARMS when I work in my garden. I bare even more at the beach, etc.

I *think* codswallop was talking about the supposed right to bear arms. Then again, with her, who knows what she meant? I have stopped trying to work it out.

using that logic, why were you so keen to change govt? very time we have a new PM we spend a fortune on updating pictures, signs and stationary ... surely you'd prefer to have kept Gillard or Rudd? We already had both sets of stationary printed

I hope Cosgrove declines any invitation to take the job on.  He is a military man and nothing more than that.  Bryce was Governor of Queensland and is a Lawyer.  Cosgrove has no experience which will assist him in such an important Constitutional role.  It would take some shine away from his career in the Army as well.  He does not need the money, nor any additional prestige.  Why would he want the job?

Yes I read what you wrote  I am asking what costs? Name them. BTW, I am not a republican, I just don't buy the bullsh it it would cost a lot of money. To change the title of our head of state would cost sweet fa, the new head would live in the same house as the GG no cost, what would cost?????? Btw no body said we had to change the flag to become a republic, although again, why would this cost huge dollars if we did?

What experience do you think a GG requires? It's a do-nothing job anyway.

The biggest single cost would be holding the referendum itself.  I would be interested to hear where you get the 'enormous cost' from.

For the last referendum the '64 changes' (from memory I thought it was 74, but that's of little importance) were removing references to the Queen and the Governor General (and consequential changes because of the removal) and the process for appointing a HoS and possible removal of the HoS).

As for coins, I love that, you all think the queen is going to live forever and we will never change our pissy coin, which BTW is being gradually phased out anyway as a result of people now using cash less and less.
Who said we have to change Army airforce navy regiments and flags??? Please explain? Canada didn't. Again I stress, I am not a republican, I just don't swallow bullsh it.

Assuming the referendum was held jointly with a Federal election the costs stated above would be substantially less.

I cant see the cost of photographs being a big deal.
Existing currency would still be used and replaced over time (the same as it is now) with changes (as happens now).
I cannot see  why a HoS (President?) would need more staff than the GG already has.
Changing the Aussie flag is a different issue but I see no need for a change.

I am indifferent either way

The classical case is Hong Kong

Has Hong Kong really changed since falling back into Chinese hands?

How would the laws reflect the change?

Do we say that the new Republic will adopt existing laws?

We we have to change everything that says "Commonwealth"

Are we excluded from CHOGM? What is the cost of that?

Trade deals that are signed with "the Commonwealth" - does that need to be changed?

I have a small bias on the Republic side of the debate, but I am not overly fussed about it.

What I have very strong feelings about is the anti-republic zealots that use distortions, lies and completely irrelevant points to argue their case.

Start another topic Andrei, this thread is about Australia becoming a republic (and the cost).  Changing the flag is an entirely different topic that has nothing to do with whether Australia becomes a republic (or the cost).

(I would have thought a Mod should know better).

Lets face it..only traitors to this country would defend being subservient to a foreign monarchy while saluting a flag with the UK flag flying in the corner.
The English flag doesn't have the union jack anywhere on it so why does the Australian flag pay homage to our invaders and oppressors?

So thats a second one on this thread from another country who wants a different model forAustralia.

Its understandable to some extent given they have no buy in to tradition or history of their new country but a tad boisterous or rude to turn up and demand the system changed?!

I disagree Adel,

Many of the monarchists want to hold on to  our heritage of our historical connection to the UK.   I can understand that and its why I have no problem with the union jack being part of our flag.  It is part of our history and nothing will change that.

However, while our heritage wont change, what has changed is the make up of the current demographic.

I am pleased, proud and embrace the multiculturalism we have achieved in Australia.  Australia will need to eventually establish its identity in the world.  It needs to be a place that all the people from around the world that have made Australia home feel welcome ...   not just the $20 tourists we got from the UK 50 years ago.

Ok.  Thanks for that.  I understand how for some in your predicament, changing from android to Apple is like going from living in North Korea to South Korea.  For the rest of us, there's a reason they have stopped providing instruction manuals with phones. :).  And I agree, it's exactly how the transition will go from some old bag with some jewellery , who truly offers no benefit and simply lives off the tit of the taxpayer, as head of state.  The perfect welfare bludger.

So thats a second one on this thread from another country who wants a different model forAustralia.

Its understandable to some extent given they have no buy in to tradition or history of their new country but a tad boisterous or rude to turn up and demand the system changed?!

You disagree with political debate Andrei - you dont allow difference of opinion?

No i dont have a problem with debate.

However on the subject of changing tradition and our system i dont believe people born in another country should get a say.

Thats my view on this subject.

People from countries not linked to our tradition and Commonwealth etc will have little appreciation of it because they have no Australian heritage in the first place.

Hence i am not surprised to see non-Australian born people on here not in favour of the Monarchy.

It isnt a surprise to see Victoria - with such a large non-traditional Aussie background population - most in favour of a Republic last time whereas WA and QLD was so against.

It's hardly tradition?  Tradition would see all the wealth centered completely around the crown and the incestual lords.  If you want tradition go back to that model.  But a democratic monarchy, what an absolute waste of time.  "Let's celebrate the people responsible for torture, hardship and death of millions for the sake of tradition". What a great use of public funds.

Its not anything personal against posters here or whatever but has always been my view on this.

Why for example would an Australian citizen born in say Vietnam have a loyalty to our system.

You need to have buy in and tradition to understand it and appreciate it.

So - much like you have to be born in the United States to be President, i think you should have to be born in Australia to vote in a referendum on a Republic change.

Just my take on it.

Ah no wonder you wish to celebrate the aristocracies of the past.  Your mindset is set in the 1700s, which to me only demonstrates that had you actually been born in that time, no doubt you would've fallen victim to the slave trade.  But keep celebrating your wonderful monarchy.

It all depends...do u want to stay subservient to a foreign power or do you want to be a part of a totally independent country?
Ask the Americans if the war of independence was worth the cost.

do u want to stay subservient to a foreign power

I strongly suspect the Queen would welcome the chance to forget about this place and the wankers who whinge on about a republic. Australia's loss, remove the Crown off everything, remove the flag and replace it with whatever you like, but make sure you ask the men and women who serve, and the men and women who have served. Chisel out all reference to the Crown on the memorials to the brave men and women who have given their lives under that flag.

Go for it Australia.........loose what connection you have to a place of great significance. Remove it from your history books, remove it from your history lessons........

Oh yes, ya need to forget the Ashes as well, maybe Indonesia and China can replace that tournament with something else?

Losing the crown doesn't lose out connection to anything.  History doesn't all of a sudden get re-written, and the British heritage will always be there.  But you need to get over this crazy thinking that somehow this country can remain "British" during the great Asian century.  Keep the crown all you want, but face the fact that this country is changing and will continue to change.  Embrace it.

As for soldiers, soldiers fight for the people and the country, and not for the flag.  Nor for the crown.  The people and the country will always remain and will always remain grateful to the soldiers.

Every country has it's human rights violations and I would love nothing more than for my leaders to take a stand against human rights violations.

They can begin by standing up for west Papuans against the Indonesians.  Then they can by all means go up against China's record.  But in doing so id hope they also disassociate themselves immediately from the crown.

I have explained why.
How can someone who has just arrived with no attachment to our country or its traditions be expected to appreciate and defend them.

They wont.

An Australian from Vietnam or Italy is not going to be as loyal to the Queen as those of us born in Australia with families and heritage back over decades.
Its obvious.

They can begin by standing up for west Papuans against the Indonesians.  Then they can by all means go up against China's record.  But in doing so id hope they also disassociate themselves immediately from the crown.

Unfortunately none of that will happen given in actual fact because of people with your "money means everything" mindset.

afterall, look how long it took sth africa to change their ways.

South Africa was more dangerous after apartheid than during actually.

Phucked if I can understand why an Australian Citizen no matter where or when they were born should not have the same say on the matter as every other Australian Citizen no matter where or when they were born.

Loyal to the queen ;D ;D ;D. Says it all really.

Why should one be "loyal to the queen".

And your point is completely whacked.  Having lived my entire life bar 5 years here, and having gone to school here, and having worked here, I can intrinsically say I have a much better understanding of Australia than you.  For one, i don't drink Starbucks when I'm in Melbourne.

To become an Australian citizen, did you have to get a certificate?

Your answer to that (which i dont need) should tell you how much tradition and heritage you have to the country.

Actually no.  :). Check what happens when you're a child and you're parents get the citizenship.  A true Australian knows our laws.

So andrei, why should one be loyal to the queen?  Or soon loyal to some new king?  Please do tell us.

Will they chop my head off for not being loyal?  Deny me food?  Torture me?  Leave me up on public display as punishment?

Or perhaps use me as a slave because I'm deemed a second class citizen because my skin isn't of the right shade?

Perhaps ship me off to a colony for stealing a loaf of bread?

What a tradition to honour!!

One should honour Britain for its literature, music, art, food.  For its discoveries.

But not the country's old aristocracy that basically brought about nothing but pure greed and pain.

Im not making this personal but im sorry if you came to Australia then you just dont have heritage.

I mean how can you possibly have a loyalty to a system and tradition when you dont even have a single parent or grandparent from our country?

Its just impossible.

Look at the demographics of say the Asian parts of Melbourne and see the polling on republic there.
Then compare to say my wifes hometown of Townsville with huge percentage as 4th generation Aussies and look how they feel.

The stats back up my argument.

New Australians want to change what they dont appreciate.

No Aussie you are born an Australian, your birth certificate comes after.

Those who come to Australia as immigrants get a certificate to be Australian.

That is in essence my point. They dont have the heritage to be voting on our heritage.
I dont class them as second class or anything like that, i just think they weaken the voting base on this one issue.

They should be allowed to vote in all other issues.

I didnt say that.
But if she was born in Asia then my opinion is she shouldnt be allowed to vote on a referendum no.

But again its not about personal here. Its a blanket view.

My youngest daughter is born in Canada, she shouldn't either when she is 18 despite the fact she is an Australian citizen.

My capacity to do anything as an Australian depends on that Birth Certificate.  The Indian Bride's capacity to do anything as an Australian depends on that Naturalisation Certificate I saw her get about 30+ years ago.  She is an Indian, born in Kenya, and raised mostly as a bloody Pom.  She is more 'Aussiefied' than you are Andrei.  Your claim seems to rely very heavily on the fact you were born here, but in fact, you really do not identify as 'Aussie.'  There is evidence for that all over this Forum.

You on the Electoral Roll here, Andrei?

Nuclear bombs annoy progressives.  You want to see them exploded?

Chemical weapons annoy progressives.  Let's release them?

Price rises annoy progressives,  rise rise rise?

Wages decreases annoy progressives,  decrease them?

It seems progressives are the only ones who whinge about those things.  Conservatives tend to not care unless it happens within the physical line of sight.  Only then it becomes bad or an important issue.

Peter Cosgrove has been cited as a future GG for a decade or more.

John Howard has stated that he does NOT want the job.

As far as Australia becoming a Republic is concerned, we got to vote on that, way back in a Referendum, that failed.  I actually voted YES to becoming a Republic, but I think that IF we do become a Republic, we Aussies want to vote for our President, not have the position filled by some pollie. We either have a President or a Prime Minister ... NOT both. What would be the point? Howard's idea was dead wrong and the reason he did that was because he doesn't want Australia to ditch the Monarchy.  I think the Monarchy is a Pom thing and we don't need it here.  ;)

Why not just replace the Queen and the GG with a President (or any other name you want to call them), appointed by parliament.

We've never voted for our monarch or GG.

Because becoming a REPUBLIC is just not changing the names and titles in Australia's Constitution.

We don't actually vote for the Prime Minister, either, remember?

We do NOT need a Prime Minister and a President ... i.e. calling the GG a President, won't work. If we ever become a Republic, the entire system has to change.

How does throwing away a stable sysrtem of government for an unknown system of government, benefit us, exactly.

And please don'ta say it is just a name change, because only a total moron would believe that, but then again if that is your argument, I suppose that is all you have.

Aussie obviously has no respect for men who went to War.  Cosgrove would be a good GG. Other military persons have done the job previously.  The position needs someone with decorum and the ability to have a stiff upper lip while shaking hands with all sorts and still looking like you are enjoying it.  It is NOT a fashion post. ;)

So you would just, say, change the name Parliament to Congress? Use as bit of whiteout on the Australian Constitution and hope for the best?  It's a LEGAL DOCUMENT, you can't just change the bloody name of stuff.

The American Republican "system" is basically the same as what we already have, sure, but ........... there are intricate parts that would need "amending". LEGALLY!

Although I agree that Australia should bag the Queen, it is not that easy and there are legalities that have to be addressed.  Besides, it would need yet another REFERENDUM as it would affect ALL Australians and the track record of referendums is around - Fail.

America needed a Civil War to become a Republic. Unless we are overtaken by the Muslims, I can't see Aussies taking up arms to defend themselves in their own country because we no longer want the Monarch in England. In 50 years? Maybe. I won't be around.

Is that it, Neferti.  Is that the 'legal ramification?'  We'd need a 'referendum?'  Wot?  You are shittin' me, aren't you?

Surely Abbott can just wave his magic wand, and voila........we are a Republic!

:D

For you and the rest of the lazy geniuses here.

Section 62 of the Constitution states the Queen as our head of state; to change the Constitution you must put it to a referendum and it must pass.

So yes there are legal issues and no voila and a magic wand won't cut it in the real world where we adults live.

Jeez, try using friggen google at some point; save everyone's intellegence being insulted by such cretinous remark as yours.

Sorry Aussie.  There is absolutely NO POINT in carrying on a conversation with a guy who has had way too many VBs.  Talk to you another day.  ;)

A Referendum!  One which must actually pass!  Wot!  Amazing we can't just go 'Open Sesame,' and a republic is born.  I can't believe it. :D

Actually that usually results in one heck of a conversation.  And there is NOTHING wrong with having too many VBs.

Nothing at all.  I do prefer VB as a beer, so shoot me.  But, the silly old twat prefers random personal abuse (to which I respond occasionally) and such rubbish vacuous posts.....so phucking stupid, I weaken and make the mistake of engaging with the idiot......and that's it for 2013.

Andrei thinks that as long as one says "it's not personal" then it's not personal abuse.  It's like we're back in year 7.

I don't think the republic debate is currently active in Australia, not many people really care.

We have enough real problems.

Which is pretty much my view.
On the list of issues and problems facing the country it really just isn't a priority or necessity.

Not when it is 100% correct.  The stupid bint is a silly old twat.

Are the provocative VB references okay Andrei?  You have read the stupid bints posts which (all over this Forum) have preceded mine, haven't you?  Have a look at its posting record.  Surely, I'm allowed a jab back occasionally?

Well - Pere Cosgrove is my kind of grunt - I remember when Wee Johnnie was trotting to keep up with him on an inspection of the troops..

Johnnie said :-

"Fine body of men, Peter!"

Now Pete's a bit deaf, as all grunts are, so you can understand when his response was:-

"Hunh?  Oh.. yes.. they are!"

Now I see why they invented velcro shoes, for people like you to go outside unassisted..

You didn't seem to understand that basics of constitutional and now you want everyone to beleieve you are an expert of some description.

You must be looking to another year at "special school". You are a child, with childish ways and childish beliefs. Now go away while the adults speak.
