Federal Labor has called on Immigration Minister Scott Morrison to reconsider a decision to deny a Somali woman a short-term visa that would allow her to undergo surgery for gunshot wounds.

Ayaan Mohamed, 25, had her face shattered by a bullet as her family tried to flee violence in Somalia's brutal civil war. She was two years old at the time.

Because the complicated facial reconstruction surgery she requires is not available in her homeland, Brisbane's Wesley Hospital and Rotary had offered to bring her to Australia.

But the government has refused to grant Ayaan a short-term medical visa.

Opposition immigration spokesman Richard Marles said the Australian identity was one characterised by compassion.

'Mr Morrison, this decision makes no sense,' he said.

'It appears profoundly unfair and needs to be reconsidered.'

Why would you refuse a short-term medical visa for this woman Mr Morrison....All it will cost is a bit of compassion???

I agree. I can't see why Morrison would deny this, but I am hoping there is a very good, legitimate reason for it.

Adel, on the face of it, this decision seems to have no justification and appears mean-hearted. But the article is short on details and even the Labor Immigration spokesman seems to not know the full story. I suggest we all wait for the full details to be revealed before passing judgement.

'It appears profoundly unfair and needs to be reconsidered.'

This statement leads me to think that there is more to this story than meets the eye.

performing surgery on 23 year old bullet wounds isn't exactly crucial.

besides, aren't you lot always bitching about the state of our hospitals?  make up your mind.

So you'd begrudge this woman treatment for this disfigurement?

We CAN help, and we SHOULD.

What if it was someone YOU knew?

How would you like to be shot in the face, and have to walk around
like this, when someone COULD help but WON'T?

You are correct when you say she is not the only one suffering and in need of help.....However help has been offered for this woman who has no other chance of ever getting treatment.....The only thing stopping her from getting treatment is a short term medical visa.....This is about compassion for a young woman who has been offered help but had it denied and I would like to know why???

There is no reason at all that woman can’t have surgery!

If the fascists insist—they can declare the Somali woman’s hospital as excised from the Australian Migration Zone, or some such nonsense.

A Somali woman denied needed surgery today, tomorrow—just who will be denied what medical care?

If she wasn't possibly a Muslim and a Somalian then many people on this thread wouldn't care. If it was some white Christian from Europe being flown over here for an operation many people who are crying on this thread would be screaming "why?"

*Her problems are old. This is not an emergency.
*There is nothing special about this case. This hospital is not like one of three in the world that can do a special form of brain surgery, and only a hand full of people need the operation each year. This is not a special case.
*There are thousands of hospitals in Europe that are only hours away that could do this. Why does she need to fly half way around the world to get help?
*There are people in Australia waiting for more pressing operations, especially in QLD, that now has a waiting list that could probably stretch to Somalia in size 10 font. Why the hell should Australians have to wait to get access to an Australian hospital because a foreigner on the other side of the world wants surgery to look normal?

On the surface this may seem cruel, but all those other Australians are not just numbers. They to are real people in need. Why should these real people in real need be pushed aside to make way for someone on the other side of the world?

The issue isn't that she isn't important because she is from Somalia. The issue is what makes her more important than the people here?

Yes, she needs attention but why 23 years later?

Why NOT?

Help was offered, and this maggot-ridden government refused, for no justifiable reason.

So what's your beef with helping her?

Is it because she's Muslim?

Or because she's Somalian?

Or do you have some warped idea that somehow YOU are paying?

Miss this???

"Brisbane's Wesley Hospital and Rotary had offered to bring her to Australia."

No-one is 'pushing-in' or 'queue-jumping.

Sorry, but I don't accept your reasoning at all.

So there is constantly a surgery room free at this hospital that is not used for anyone else? What do you think waiting list are for? If it is being used for her that means that it is not being used for someone else.

We are seriously loosing our way when there are people like you in this country who think that an Australian has no more right to an Australian hospital than someone living on the other side of the world. FFS.

Maybe she was denied a visa due to something other than the purpose of the visit.  But nah - no 25 year old somalian female gunshot victim could have ever done anything bad.  Angels, every last one of them.  That's why somalia is world renowned for it's laid back, friendly pacifistic lifestyle.

What sort of response are they expecting, that I'd say 'Oh, it's Labor, no worries'?

Phil, you are correct, the decision is wrong no matter who made it.

I'd be calling Labor out on this the same as the Libs.

Wonder what the Right will make of that?

Can't be bothered. But he is an idiot who is caving into illogical external pressure. Our hospitals have massive waiting lists. We have people waiting at times years for operations because there is simply too much to be done. Now we are shipping in patients from the other side of the world who are a few hours flight from 1000's hospitals that could do the same thing.

I stand by what I said before;

Personally helping a lady with a destroyed face is a great thing. I'm just interested in why Labor knocked her back. Is she a security risk? Is she seeking a visa? Do we foot the bill for surgery and end up supporting her and her family as well while they move out here. I can sense some hemorrhaging hearts behind all this and other facts.
