When I said bigots, I meant religious bigots - and that's from experience. Most major religions are bigoted against other major religions to some extent. I find that polytheists are probably the least religiously bigoted.
As far as racial bigotry is concerned, it's everywhere. That doesn't make it right. No. I'm not a Freediver sock ::) (Give me strength.) I actually know a lot of Muslims from various parts of the world. They are mostly the salt of the earth, but they generally have an attitude against non-believers. People go on about socks, but socks are endangered species, as anybody who has tried to evade a ban by using a sock will tell you. They end up being banned twice as long. I believe in Life, and love. Is that God? Maybe it is if If I choose to define it as such. |

Difficult to judge based upon one encounter don't you think? When I worked in the USA I met quite a few non native American citizens and I must say that I left the country with a very ordinary feeling. Not impressed at all. Ironically the best two people I met through work were both Jewish Americans (and best I just mean I got along with them well, and they were politically along the same lines of thought as I was - so I suppose that may have been a reason) |

Actually I know one woman in Florida who has visited Israel, and she said that they treated her as an honorary Jew. She has also been to a number of Arabic speaking countries and speaks fluent Arabic. Her ancestry is German.

Well as I said, I am only going from experience. I've never actually met any real Ancient Romans, so I can't comment on their attitude. I know that the gladiatorii spectaculi were arranged by corrupt Roman Emperors, and I know that the Christians of the time were treated as subversives. (For example - the monks in Alexandria at the time of Hypatia.) As far as the crowd was concerned, they probably just enjoyed the show, regardless of the religious persuasion of the convicted ones. Don't forget that the Roman empire included many different cultures, and that not all Roman Emperors were actually from Rome or even Italy. For example, Claudius, Stilicho, Caracalla, Septimius Severus, Elagabalus etc. As far as Indians are concerned, my experience has been with educated Indians in Australia. Generally I have found that "belief" is not the subject of decent conversation. It's more about cultural tradition. I haven't heard many problems with the Bahaii. |

Not bad - for a moderator. Maybe the trope of bloodthirsty-Roman proles is just that. Perhaps the Circus Maximus was an elaborate spectacle to demonstrate Caesar’s power - the way the Chinese drive those to be executed in trucks through the city. The way the Amerikans show protesters - and supporters - outside jails on CNN and Fox. Execution as spectacle. After all, why else let blood? Maybe the circus wasn’t a sport at all. Or - maybe sporting events themselves started as a way to express the emperor’s power over life. You’ve piqued my curiousity, Muso. What have you been reading? |

Ancient history is probably my major leisure pastime. I actually re-live it with re-enactments and even in Italy I have been called on to advise on details. (That sound like a wank LOL). I'll PM you some time.
