Title: Ahmed Takes Heroic Stand Against Alcohol Sponsors Post by True Colours on Sep 3rd, 2013 at 3:31pm
Muslim spinner given leave to keep a sponsor off his back
Fawad Ahmed will raise a hard-earned thirst in the one-day cricket series against England this week, but he will not promote the product his teammates will as a way to quench it. Ahmed, one of two Australian Muslims to play on the ''VB Tour of England'', was picked for the five-game limited overs series after he made his debut in the Twenty20 series last week. The spin bowler...''expressed discomfort'' about wearing the logo of one of Cricket Australia's two major sponsors because, on religious grounds, he does not associate with alcohol. Mike McKenna, CA's executive general manager operations, said the parties were ''respectful of Fawad's personal beliefs'' and agreed to his request to wear an unbranded shirt. ''Cricket Australia would have weighed this up seriously,'' Australian Cricketers' Association chief executive Paul Marsh said. ''They would have thought about the precedent it could set. But I commend them and Carlton United for taking an approach that allowed the player to not contravene his personal beliefs.'' There are no provisions in cricketers' contracts for objections to sponsors' logos. However, Marsh said, ''If a player has reasonable personal or professional objection … they would allow the player to be exempt. That's what has been extended to Fawad. They came to a very reasonable agreement."... ....English Premier League footballer, Papiss Cisse, a Muslim, recently refused on religious grounds to wear his Newcastle team shirt featuring a sponsor, whose business is to offer short-term loans. South African cricketer Hashim Amla, also a Muslim, was exempted from wearing a beer brand logo on his shirt. http://www.theage.com.au/sport/cricket/muslim-spinner-given-leave-to-keep-a-sponsor-off-his-back-20130902-2t13m.html |

since when do you have to 'associate' with a sponsors products to be sponsored by them? Sponsors pay money to provide you with equipment etc, and in exchange they get to display their logo's etc on uniforms .....
what a load of croc. If he can't wear the VB logo he should go and play for someone else. |

The Quran allows alcohol, perhaps this muslim prefers a nice warm glass of camel urine.

If there is a verse in the Quran that prohibits alcohol would that contradict 16/67? Quote:
Muslims prefer Camel urine to a cold beer, anytime they raise the issue of alcohol we should remind them that Mohammad prescribed drinking camel urine. Here is an Islamic preacher explaining the health benefits of drinking camel urine,he says it will even cure baldness. www.islamqa.com/en/83423 |

thank God. I was wondering what he would do about it - given the precedent set by Hashim Amla.
Was disappointed with Usman Kawaja wearing it during the tests. Perhaps this should be the catalyst for opening a debate on the merits of having a product that is so detrimental to health and society as an effective mascot for a sporting team, who are roll models for millions of young impressionable Australians. |

You don't think wearing a sponsor's badge on the shirt you play sport in - in front of millions of fans - is not associating with that sponsor? Strange logic you have JS Baronvonrort wrote on Sep 3rd, 2013 at 4:12pm:
Is there any point me disproving this for the fourth time? |

Perhaps that’s what the Australian selectors are worried about. Maybe he’ll go and play for Pakistan. We must respect individual freedom of belief, friends. After all, an Aussie may refuse to wear a curry logo if he played for India or Sri Lanka. It’s in the Constitution. Isn’t it. |

You should google urine therapy and see the medical benefits of drinking urine. I persoannally wouldn't drink it but there are a lot of health benefits to the practise of drinking and using urine. I don't drink alcohol and I wouldn't promote it aswell. |

Let us drink in moderation, yes? |

do you think every sportsman that wears a logo uses that companies products? They are just a sponsor who is using your shirt as a billboard. They pay for advertising, you get equipment at no charge to you .... everybody wins. If he doesn't like it he should go and play for pakistan |

A sponsorship is a two-way deal. The sponsor pays money for an endorsement. Fawad has refused to endorse killer alcoholic products. Quote:

This is true, my friend. In Pakistan you can buy many billboards. Burqa is very good - many products you can sell. Andrei Hicks sahib buys ladies by the dozen. We are planning joint-venture with Pakistani camel urine company. Watch this space, friends, and drink in moderation. |

Of course not, but thats not the same as associating yourself with the product. If you wear a beer brand on an international arena for the specific purpose of promoting it, then obviously you are associating yourself with that brand. And any self-respecting muslim would have a huge problem with associating and promoting an alcohol brand. John Smith wrote on Sep 4th, 2013 at 9:53am:
Or - he could work out some sort of arrangement with the sponsors and cricket Australia. I'm not sure what arrangement they reached - but I know in Hashim Amla's case he pays a "fee" out of his own pocket to compensate the sponsors for not wearing the brand. Either way, clearly CA and VB are ok with this - the only people who matter in this case. |
