Title: Whatever happened to humanitarian Kev? Post by bogarde73 on Jul 20th, 2013 at 1:44pm
Isn't this the guy who wasn't going to get into a race to the bottom on boat people? (I'm talking of course about a time after his period as a "turn them back" proponent - it's hard to keep up with Kev's positions)
It must be difficult for you people on the left, but not green, not to feel just a teensy-weensy bit hypocritical about having to support the new, tough guy Kev. But don't worry. It's only till the election. That's why we have 3000 going to PNG. Just about see us through to the election . . .but not after. No, not after. Because they'll keep coming whatever happens, unless of course someone has the guts to go for my solution. What I want to know is how much this election gimmick is going to cost us, including the interest, because it will be borrowed. |

Kevin learnt a lot from his time in the wilderness...nice guys finish last.
I really dont care what he says and does as long as it ends Tony Abbott's political career |

If he uses the heads of desperate, displaced people to get a lift up that's ok with you Adel?
You've been hanging out with Asians for too long... |

Its either Labor or Liberal that's gonna do it and I would prefer that this issue sunk Abbotts political career so some good can come of it. |

"Whoever would have thought a Prime Minister who said we would lurch to the Right under Julia Gillard would lurch so far he finds himself to the Right of Tony Abbott??
A rich nation such as Australia dumping thousands of vulnerable people onto an impoverished country for the sake of electioneering? It's disgusting and its immoral. Australians should be ashamed." Christine Milne |

andrei, in today's climate a disendorsement by the greens will be seen by Rudd as a badge of honour.
I can welcome this paltry, ever-so-temporary diversion by Rudd because I don't have a humanitarian gene, but what about the Labor supporters here. Surely they must be in tears. |

I agree with Christine, but the reality is that this policy doesn't reduce the number of refugees we will continue to accept into Australia. What she should be arguing for is an increase in the total number of refugees that we accept into Australia each year. We are one of the richest countries in the world yet we accept relatively few refugees. The Greens have yet to convince me that Rudd's PNG solution is a bad thing. |

Desperate, displaced people? Gee, you’ve had a big rethink on this issue, Andrei. What happened to rubbish people, shoeshiners, dolebludgers, goatherders, rapists, terrorists and not our own kind? |

yes, he has improved. There is a LOT of unspoken details of the PNG deal. It's not a solution. towing them back is. |

How is it a solution when Indonesia has made it clear they won't accept it. I think you're forgetting we need Indonesia's support to stop these boats leaving Indonesia in the first place. |

You heard it here first, folks. Towing fishing boats being scuttled and set on fire back to Indonesia is a better idea than a regional solution that gives community resettlement to all refugees who make it to Australia - at a fraction of the cost of detention centres. Only Mr Abbott can STOP THE BOATS. |

The Coalition seem to think that its such a good idea that they are adopting the same plan so towing back boats is off their agenda now there is better policy being implimented |

Yep. Ditto, me too. That's all I care about. The rest will sort itself out, for the best interests of Australia, all that matters is Abbott is beaten. It's so funny. The conga line don't give a bugger about the refugees, if they did they would support this, all they care about is Kevvy has removed another phoney Tony wedge, too funny. ;D ;D :D |

The other side to the issue is Humanitarian Kev's intercession with Indonesia to get Iranians denied visas. Not that this will happen except as to lip service.
What has Rudd done here? 1. As I understand it, most of the Iranians on boats are of the Baha'i faith. People we want here, peaceful people persecuted by the muslim dragoons. So he stops them getting here, but muslims from everywhere else . . .come on down! 2. He interferes with Indonesia's booming tourist business from the middle east - which is why it's not going to happen - demonstrating yet again that he only has the capacity to be destructive rather than constructive. |

the whole point of the policy is that refugees WONT be going to PNG because they wont be coming at all. Im okay with refugees but I'd like them to join the queue and have visas like everyone else. |

if this is them TRYING to stop the boats then it is an epic fail. And logically, if they were REALLY trying to stop the boats they wouldn't mind Australia returning them to port. But they aren't interested in stopping the boats at all. That has to be exceptionally obvious. |

It was never a 'high ideal' of mine that people, including kids, drown at sea after paying Achmed the Smuggler to undertake a voyage on the high seas in leaky and unseaworthy vessels. Was that something you wanted? Did you want to see people die? Huh? When you reply, tell me exactly what is wrong with this Rudd solution to the problem of people smugglers. |

six years ago we had a working solution until Rudd dismantled it. In those 6 years a couple thousand have drowned until now Rudd finally comes up with a solution that is materially similar to the working solution that was in place before. ON what planet does he deserve praise for the deaths of thousands due to his arrogant stupidity and intransigence to reverse it when it became obvious it was a fiasco. So labor STOPS killing refugees. why are we suppose to applaud? |

it is in keeping with the actions of laborites over the past few weeks. After three years of hating Rudd, now they 'love' him. After three years of shouting 'come one, come all' to every country shopper and terrorist-in-hiding, they now want to applaud the exact opposite. Labourites have no principles. Power is their only goal. |

Rudd's plan is to increase the number of refugees we accept into Australia, but remove the incentive to come by boat. I'm sure many Australians, including Labor supporters can see the merit in it. It's also a more humane solution than Labor's untried Malaysian solution. I believe, at the end of the day, very few asylum seekers will decide to get on a boat to end up in PNG. |

that's a pretty hefty assumption seeing sa Rudd ended the pacific solution and invited the boats back ina and even now it could be easily argued that he has only acted out of a sense of securing votes rather than principle. In fact, it would be difficult to argue otherwise. |
