Australian politician sorry for 'liking' Facebook photo of teenager's genitals.

Peter Collier admits to making silly mistake in 'liking' image of 16-year-old exposing himself in 'sneaky nuts' prank

An Australian politician says he has learned a valuable lesson in social networking after he "liked" a Facebook photo without realising that it showed a teenage prankster exposing himself.

Western Australia's minister for education, Peter Collier, said he clicked the "like" button under what he thought was an innocent photo of the then 16-year-old in late 2011.

Collier apologised on Thursday and said he had no idea that the teenager, who was otherwise fully clothed and posing alongside an older man, was playing a prank commonly known as "sneaky nuts".

"At first glance it appeared to be a harmless picture," Collier said in a statement. "It was a silly mistake on my part. I only became aware of the actual content of the photo when shown by a journalist today. This obviously highlights the pitfalls of social media. I apologise if I caused any offence."

The stunt was popularised by Australian comedian Chris Lilley's TV show Angry Boys, in which a character revels in ruining group photos by secretly exposing himself. The prank has been a headache for some educators: last year, administrators at a Catholic school in Canada scrambled to place stickers over a photo printed in 1,300 class yearbooks of a student subtly exposing his genitals.

The Australian incident did not attract attention until late last month, when the teenager bragged on Twitter about fooling Collier, with whom he was friends on Facebook.

I see that you can't comment on it.

So do you think that it is all right for a grown man to like child photography because that is what he done the boy was only 16 years old.

How many other times has Collier done it and hasn't been caught?

He is the Minister of Education and he likes child photography of 16 year old boy

He is setting a good example for the education department.

If he was a labor politician you would want him hang out to dry.

a boy of 16 exposing himself is not PORNOGRAPHY.

he did it for a joke... [hum boys will be boys]
the boy was fully dressed the minister knows the young man....get your head out of the gutter..what a sleaze you are turning out to be.

it was not an offence of any kind whatsoever. not at all. nothing. nada. he fell for a practical joke, nothing more. and at the time of saying so I was unaware he was a liberal because I dont care. it was NOT an offence. it wasnt even really bad judgement.

it was a photo of a 16yo teenage (ie not a boy) with and adult man. Hardly the stuff of questionable content.

Whilst I don't think liking a photo on facebook is a sackable offense, I just love how the righties on here can't help but hurl abuse at anything that even looks like criticism of a lib. minister ... if he was a labor minister you would all be baying for blood. Hypocrites.

I don't think he should be sacked but I do think someone needs to keep an eye on him ... maybe he liked it without realising what it was, or maybe he saw what it was and liked it .... either way, when it comes to the kids, better safe than sorry.

Theoretically and under law this is distribution and viewing of underage nudity.

But I agree that realistically its nonsense mistake and can happen to anyone.

So the WA Education Minister doesn't recognise a pair of testicles when the sees them.

Just as well he didn't go in for medicine.

no. it is better the be RIGHT than wrong. your concept is how we excuse presumptions of guilt, suspensions and sackings without cause or due process or the destruction of reputation without reason.

and the kids are not any safer as a result anyhow.

I haven't called anyone guilty, or called for any sacking or suspension .... In fact I say the exact opposite. If I thought he was guilty, I would recommend castrating him with a pair of blunt scissors. Do you think I might refrain from saying so because I am concerned about what you may think of it?

Why is it that you can never take anything that is written at face value? Everything anyone writes you have to twist it to mean something else .. are you dyslexic?
