Gillard quizzed over big budget items
Date March 13, 2013 The Age. Paul Osborne, AAP Senior Political Writer The Gillard government is under pressure to explain how it can fund big budget items such as immigration detention and balance the demands of the domestic welfare sector. The opposition on Wednesday turned its focus in parliament to the cost of offshore processing of asylum seekers, as Prime Minister Julia Gillard declined to speculate on the size of the budget deficit. Labor also announced a new spending package - a national cultural policy with a $235 million price tag over four years - as it faced welfare sector calls backed by some Labor MPs for higher benefits payments for struggling job seekers and single mums. ;) As a Barclays analyst forecast the 2012/13 budget deficit could top $20 billion, Ms Gillard declined to reflect on the implications for next year's books. "I don't want to disappoint you, but you will see the updated budget in two months' time," she told reporters in Canberra. During question time, Opposition Leader Tony Abbott quizzed the prime minister over the cost of offshore processing, which budget papers suggest will fall over the next four years as arrivals slow down. Labor's counting on the cost of one key element - offshore asylum seeker management - to drop from $1.7 billion in 2012/13 to $137 million in 2015/16. Mr Abbott said the figures weren't credible because more people had arrived by boat in the past nine months than during the entire period of the Howard coalition government. Ms Gillard said Mr Abbott's "reckless negativity" meant there would be more boat arrivals because he could have eased the pressure by backing the Houston expert panel's reforms last year. :( Immigration Minister Brendan O'Connor said the opposition had sensationalised the issue of boat arrivals, saying 98 per cent of people had come through "regular" migration pathways. He said he was hopeful a meeting in April of nations involved in the Bali process - a regional scheme to tackle people-smuggling - would make progress. The minister was also questioned on whether transfers to the Manus Island detention facility had been suspended. Opposition immigration spokesman Scott Morrison said there had been no transfers since February 9 and Papua New Guinea officials had advised him of an indefinite suspension. Mr O'Connor said there had been no such suspension and the two governments were still committed to transfers. Labor backbenchers are also getting behind the Australian Council of Social Service's push for the Newstart unemployment payment for singles to be raised by $50-a-week. [smiley=thumbsup.gif] NSW senator Doug Cameron says it can be paid for with the expansion of the mining tax, a Medicare style levy and a crackdown on the tax treatment of trust funds. "That's a debate that Labor people should be having," Senator Cameron said. Arts Minister Simon Crean said a new national cultural policy would be paid for by savings in government departments. © 2013 AAP |

What our incompetent PM conveniently left out was the undeniable fact that prior to Rudd becoming PM, the problem of illegal immigrants had been solved via the Pacific Solution. It was a non-issue for everyone except the bleeding-heart brigade. In came Rudd and his "compassionate" solution for a problem that ceased to exist long ago and he completely stuffed it up. Since then, more than 30,000 people have arrived and more than 1,000 have perished at sea thanks to Rudd's "compassionate" solution. Labor could and should have fixed this mess years ago by reinstating the Pacific Solution. Instead, Gillard has had more positions on this issue than one of Craig Thomson's prostitutes has ever been in and the people smugglers know this government isn't serious or even competent enough to stop them. Labor made this mess, so it's time Gillard stopped blaming others for her and her party's own incompetence.

During the Pacific Solution, arrivals were counted in the hundreds or less per year. Under the ALP, arrivals are counted in the tens of thousands per year. If ever there was a perfect example of a government changing a policy and making things far, far worse this is it. Labor screwed up big time and is absolutely desperate to shift the blame elsewhere. Pity for them that tactic is as much a failure as their policy change.

To quote my uncle (who lives in the UAE)
"I find those idiots who say 'this is the best country in the world' have never experienced living anywhere fking else." He was referring to idiot cousins on mine in England but the principle is the same. I happen to find many countries many things. For overall lifestyle for me, the United States is the best on average. It has some social issues sure, but they don't affect me. Australia, as nice as it is, is far too expensive, too highly taxed, too socialist in its mindset on education and welfare and the people are just a bit insular for my liking. Nonetheless though it is the country of my birth and I do consider myself an Australian, even though the passport is expired. I did promise Immigration next time I'll have it re-newed before I arrive again. So don't give me this "orrrrrrrstraaaaaaya is the best place in the world" bollocks. |

Australia is very nice.
I don't happen to think it is the best place in the world for the various things I mention - it is extortionately expensive to live there. However - what is not in dispute - is that I am an Australian and I have every right to criticise it for wanting it to be better than it is. That is not the act of a traitor. Even my current passport (GBR) says "Place of Birth - Melbourne, Australia" |

$4,500 per month + additional tax on bonus equated to about $66,000 in tax paid. The PAYE I paid before any adjustments was over $65,000. Fact. I paid my way through the year. |

Technically I did.
The PAYE I paid was $65k. The Trust Holding entity in Guernsey was a separate lodgement and had a net tax position in Australia of -$54k. They are 2 different returns. Overall the bank outlay was $11k which was 5.8% but the tax of me as a person was $65k. Boom. Lesson ended. |

I had reason to go to Strathfield not long ago, I was walking down the street of the main shopping centre when I saw this line of people in the street, pretty much all middle eastern with a sprinkling of Chinese.
I thought, "what's going on are they giving away money in that building?" Then I looked up and saw it was Centrelink and yes, they were giving money -ours A TRUE STORY |
