Title: Media needs mumediagenic
Post by Peter Freedman on Mar 12th, 2013 at 11:42pm
Labor is already starting to back off meaningful regulation of the media. Bad move. The press will never regulate itself effectively. It is like a rabid dog and needs to be muzzled from time to time.

This really stokes my anger that JULIAR will find new lows in attacking freedom of speech across the press, ALL BECAUSE SHE IS ON THE RECIEVING END OF IT BECAUSE OF HER LIES, HER BLUNDERS, HER DISASTERS, so find other ways to restrict the freedom of press,

I hope to high hell, that come september 14 that Juliar and this stupid labor party will get a such  A HUUUUUGE KICK FROM THE ELECTORATE THAT THE SHOCKWAVES FROM IT WILL CONTINUE FOR YEARS TO COME.

Not sure where mumadiagenic came from, think my computer made it up.

Yes I was a journo for 25 years that is why I don't trust the bastards, I know them too well.

Of course the media is screaming about press freedom. That shows how scared they are. Regulation doesn't have to be a threat to press freedom. All it requires is that they adhere to ethical standards and can be caned if they do not.

Self regulation is the cave into which any industry retreats when threatened. If the media believes in self reg why weren't they doing it already?

Gary Morgan says:

“Today’s Morgan Poll shows the L-NP (57.5%, up 3%) increasing their lead over the ALP (42.5%, down 3%) on a two-party preferred basis despite Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s week-long stay in Western Sydney — a key battleground for this September’s election.

“The continuing leadership speculation about Prime Minister Gillard, and a possible return to the leadership of former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, continues to provide a massive distraction for the Government as it tries to improve its standing in the electorate.

“In addition, on the weekend the L-NP won a resounding victory in the WA State Election with an approximate two-party preferred result of L-NP (58%) cf. ALP (42%). During the campaign WA Opposition Labor Party Leader Mark McGowan was keen to distance the State Labor Party from the Federal Government. This is not surprising as this week’s Morgan Poll shows the Federal L-NP (69%) cf. ALP (31%) has an even stronger two-party preferred lead in WA

You can lead a horse to water Kat, but the horse will drink or not.

Does a member of the Press stand over an Australian when he is in the election booth voting?

If people are led by the Press, then what does that say for your faith in the people?

I like to think the citizens decide on their own who they will vote for.
I know I do.

many on her doubt your claim to be an ex-journo and I ahve to say that your OP adds weight to that disbelief.

Conroys media legislation is aimed squarely at a media that they think isnt treating them fairly. it is just a typical ALP-style punishment for a media that isnt praising them. it is pititful. As one CEO said, where is the example of an event that shows the media cant be trusted or speaks wrongly? Appointing what is essentially a government censor is death to press freedom.

If you were indeed a journo it was probably for the local rag. it is hard to imagine any real journo supporting govt censorship.

If that was the case then all the press would be expressing the same opinion.

They dont, so therefore they cannot be reflecting public opinion.

I started as a cadet reporter on the Napier Daily Telegraph in 1965. I was then headhunted by The Dominion and worked with that paper first in Hawke's 's Bay, then in Wellington where I served as regional editor and then industrial reporter.I served two terms as National President of the NZJU in the late 70s.

Anyone who doubts my credentials only has to Google around,  I'll be there.

This is not about government censorship, that is just media spin. It is about newspapers acting ethically and many papers here don't do that and they know it. They are pissing their pants and it serves them right.

You can wrap it in pretty packaging, any way you like but censorship is censorship. And there are going to be faceless goons out there who will decide what is and is not O.K. for public consumption.

It is straight out of the book 1984.

It this sh.t gets through we are f....d!

And Peter you should hang your head in shame as a former journalist, I can't believe your stance, incredible!

If this were censorship I would oppose it.

The media thinks everyone should be accountable to them while they are accountable to nobody.

A quarter of a century in the industry taught me to smell out the truth and separate it from the lies.

I won't be influenced by political spin or media hysteria. I make up my own mind based on considerable experience.

Can I ask if a respected ethical journalist in the 1970s in NZ, what the politics of the Republic of South Africa has to do with you?

I can see you were critical of the Republic.

Surely a respected journalist stays out of matters that have nothing to do with him?

Your own history weakens your argument here.

As well as being a respected journalist (thank you for the compliment) I am also a human being. It is in this latter role than I hated apartheid South Africa.

In my role as a journo I did not take part in any of the demonstrations against the Springboks in 1981 and reported on them factually and impartially.

Without wanting to drag your subject off-topic here, you realise that those demonstrations merely hardened Afrikaner opinion of the outside world meddling in its affairs?

Much like Sea Shepherd actually enforce Japanese public opinion with their actions.

Anyway, thats just as an aside from someone who speaks from the 'inside' on how that was all viewed.

In short, on the subject, I hate all forms of censorship of the media but believe Journalists have a duty to behave ethically and responsibly.

The front page of the Daily telegraph was an absolute disgrace. Ironically it actually weakened their case by its shear bias and stupidity.

For example, I don't agree with Pauline Hansens politics but I was appalled by the publication of those fake nude photos just before the Queensland election by News ltd. That destroyed her campaign and was an attack on democracy (and thats just one example).

Why cant the News Ltd rags just report the facts instead of always having an agenda and telling its readers which side they should be on. The Murdoch press is an absolute disgrace.

Yes! I do realise that, but for the more intelligent Afrikaners they realised they could not go on bucking world opinion forever.

Finally it was the sporting boycotts that destroyed apartheid, along with the guts of some very courageous politicians.

Andrei, the people you call imbeciles could have turned on the whites and wiped them out. Instead they chose forgiveness and burying the past. That is the act of intelligent, civilised human beings.

Ignoring the fact I don't call people imbeciles based on colour or creed  - you'll find they filled the Government posts with black Africans.

Would you care to tell me what prominent Government Minister is white now?

By the way - South Africa then had a leader who declared that there "isn't an AIDS problem in this country" when the infection rate in some townships ran at 50%....
