- and this is typical of the rash of media stories that came out after the French study. Of course the study itself made no claims of cause. It's the usual association fallacy. A large proportion of people who consume diet drinks are overweight or obese (and they drink them in an effort to be less overweight). Being overweight or obese in itself increases the risk of diabetes. The fact that they also imbibe diet drinks (or comb their hair in a certain way) is irrelevant, because no causative effect has been demonstrated. (speculated perhaps) Of course, the French study made no such claims, but hey, let's not let the facts get in the way of a good story! |

tricking the body into beliveing it's had sweet stuff, without the calories to back it up is bound to play havoc with the bodys satiety signals and corresponding insulin response, but it's just as likely to reduce the risk of diabetes as to increase it. But in the end, it doesn't matter - I wouldn't drink the stuff anyway.

All that may very well be correct, but it's not backed up by any study. In fact there are many studies that show that they have no adverse effect, whereas it's plainly obvious that sugar has many deleterious effects with strong causative links to well established mechanisms.

Its difficult to buy any drink without it being loaded with sugar or artificial sweeteners.
That's if you object to buying water. I drink coffee white with no sugar, try buying that on a hot day when you want a cold drink. Oh yes this thread is about people getting the cause and effect about arse, that to. Or is it affect? |

The media doesnt misunderstand anything they just misrepresent according to whatever agenda they are dictated by their bias.
That being said you never hear about the actual effects of that aspartame on ppl. Its a poison. I have never drank soft drink except very very occasionally in alcoholic drinks back in my 20s and i dont ever drink those diet drinks so i am not going to be giving any first hand information about them. I have read studies though about the aspartame and how it effects you. Both activist sites. How many people have died from Aspartame poisoning?
OK. Phenylalanine, (which is the component in question) will affect people with PKU (phenylketonuria), but this genetic disorder will manifest itself quite early in life, because phenylalanine is naturally found in breastmilk. PKU sufferers will have to avoid diet drinks etc, just as gluten intolerant people avoid gluten. It's not going to kill them though. How many people have died from the over consumption of sugar? Now that's the elephant in the room. By comparison, nutrisweet is the gnat in the room. |

What do you mean "activist sites"? If you look in google there are 100s and 1000s of them.
