Title: Koala - back!!
Post by Emma Peel on Dec 27th, 2012 at 1:35am
Just heard the first Koala call, that I've heard in at least 4 yrs. !!!

WOW  RAPT!!~
Thought I heard one earlier this yr....but not sure

TONIGHT. No doubt.!!

I am so pleased, because I used to hear them regularly, in mating season. 10 yrs ago.!!

I'd seen one about 2 yrs ago, a klm or two away... but this is so good.!!
Koalas around here in SEQ have been decimated  ...through habitat destruction... in the name of developing mini-cities... >:( >:(

I'm so glad. !!  I'm a Land for WildLife participant... and I'll now contact my local Council's environment people, and ask for rescued wild life..... ie Koalas.  blue-tongues   .... to be re-homed here..

:) :) :) :) :)

THE BEST XMAS pressie ever.!!!

Your best bet is to demolish your home, plant trees on every square inch of your property and go live in a cave that has been naturally carved out by nature.

Otherwise, you are one of those people who have destroyed the habitat of the koala. How dare you.

yes!! I've sent to the environment  group,, and there is a workshop coming up mid-Jan for people like myself.
The creek that runs in and then out again, on my lower boundary, is a tributary to the Logan river,  which has just failed in eco health, mainly due to turbidity.  The small bend on my property is as good as possible... the water is clear, the banks are covered with maidenhair, lomandra, rushes  etc.  Sadly, my neighbours aren't as conscious of the results of their actions,  and some significant tree-felling, close to the creek, has resulted in opening up the canopy that used to shade all of the creek..

still it is beautiful, and the trees and lower canopy, mid-level and smaller brush and ground-covers are holding their own.
It is a mapped and registered habitat ,, considered rare and at risk,  and  I will do all I can to maintain this land for our native species, as long as I am able.
What do I do for that land?  I do my very best to see that invasive weeds and feral animals are not given succour.   :)
I WEED  ... basically. I use no chemicals...  just sweat and work..and fire... but as I get older, I am finding this more difficult.. so I may have to resort to glysophate or something soon.

I am very happy to be able to say that I see things here, nearly everyday, that are entrancing and soul-affirming.
I have creatures here I can't find in reference books... and I am going to get a survey done in 2013 , of the diversity here. One can arrange to have motion-sensor cameras set up to capture the fauna passing.
Then there are the creatures of the trees and skies/ micro-bats, gliders, owls.... oooh I am looking forward to it.
See.  much of my property, is fenced off from my activities, and my dogs...
NO CATS,  so  I have a place that is full of diversity.

Something WORTH living for.... unlike money, jobs, possessions   :) :) :) :P

From what I have read, resort to glysophate is an honorable retreat, as it only affects green leaves and is neutralised once it hits the soil. We've been using it for some years in our inner-Sydney property together with minimum soil cultivation. We have lots of skinks, golden orb spiders and honey-eating birds. Over the years glysophate application has steadily diminished as germinating residual weed seeds diminish.

There's always a few seeds carried by the wind, but we are getting close to zero weeds, from a property that was once infested with them.

Hmmm yeah...  I know glysophate has a good rep...
and am glad to hear you have taken such care of your own piece of Earth.

And I also find if you keep on pulling out and burning the weeds, over years, you do definitely impact on the available seed load.... e'g' I managed to get rid of an infestation of 'Mother of Millions', pretty hard here in SEQ and Asparagus fern (well very nearly) by doggedly pulling them whenever I could. It is a simple task, and pleasing,  ..to watch as some things disappear.

I'm also in a war with smart weed, cobbler's pegs, Khaki weed,  Palms, Pines, Torelliana's , Easter Acacia's ..and the list goes on..
but am definitely on the run from Bindi -I . ::)
So probably within a yr or so I'll bring the chemicals to bear.
I've just been very stubborn,  and wish to do my best, while I can.  But certainly the heavier rainfall in the couple of yrs here, after over a decade of drought ,.  is now making that just a pipedream.
I hav all the stuff... the sprayers the chems...  I just have so much micro-life...and frogs and skinks and bugs and stuff, that I'm reluctant to use it because I cannot guarantee that no wee critters are harmed.. altho I know its said Glysophate doesn't harm ... I'm not sure I believe it.
Just a personal and no doubt ridiculous view.... and I'll be too old soon to do the maual work anyway. That's one of the reasons I can see myself using chems soon... I can't keep up with it efficiently, anymore.
Cheers :)

I cant believe you are one of those humans who destroy the koala habitiat and you use CO2 more than you breath. How do you live with yourself.

Me on the other hand, I am just the person you hypocrits like to blame.

you don't know what you are talking about proglol//////  ???

what do you understand from my posts.???
Beats me.....
But FYI.......
almost unbridled urbanisation is occurring in sensitive environmental areas in SEQ.
There are THREE  (3)  cities, currently being developed in my area.
Out of Bush, Koala Habitat ..rich and productive farmland and more Bush.      There are also several other smaller developments  as well,  in high -diversity areas.
It is criminal...
and down to, as I said, voracious appetites to urbanise rural areas
and rake in the big $$$$$$$$$. State and Local Govt, together with MAJOR developers, are throwing out the measures necessary to protect this ecology, ...and nobody wins except the moneyhungry immoral greedy pricks, who couldn't give a stuff.

It's out of control here, and has worsened considerably since Newman became Premier.

Do you understand what I'm saying??  3 major cities to house approx 40.000  people each, in the next <30 yrs.???

You understand??

You cant expect to house 40,000 new arrivals on already allotted land and you cant expect to complain when you have a house and land of your own.

When you live in a cave already carved out by nature, then I expect you to complain.

When you complain about the new arrivals need to devistate some animal like the koala to be housed, then I expect you to complain.

Apart from then, you are just being an environmentalist hypocrit or close to it.

When you complain about the new arrivals need to devistate some animal like the koala to be housed, then I expect you to complain........  PROGLOL

SOME RESPECT...!!!
You can think after all.

AND,.....   'NEED'  is indeed the issue .....   there IS NO need to do so, NOW.  ..just want, whatever money can buy.!!

There is no reason really to take the develop-at-all-costs philosophy ..here..now.  There are other options,  for urban dwelling.  The growing ugly sprawl is not necessary...  not  now. And hopefully NEVER...
but it keeps on devouring and  the machine keeps on churning....

..No.... there IS GREED.

Your slant is clear.... and   I find your opinion uninformed.
'the new arrivals '.... ::) ::) ::)
Don't tell me??!! ::) ::) :P
REFUGEES... Right???

:P ::) ::) ::)

Whats in a name when they have to be housed. The more population you have, the more sprawl you will get.

You may have an agenda 21 idea, but that is not everyones idea of living and certainly not yours if you dont live in one of these mini cities. You must have already sprawled on your own.

See,  that is your assumption,   and that is the failure of urbanisation of rural areas. It isn't the way to go. This is the 21st century after all.

And your ref to agenda 21??  not familiar ...  but I'm sure I really don't want/need to know   ;D ;D ;D ;D
