That's too obvious !! The idea is to spend as much as you can on everything that DOESN'T improve a child's education such as handing money oever to crooked builders to make unusable tuck shops. The Australian Medical System is just the same with the Private Health Providers (the ones you don't see on TV) are ripping you off just as much! They give you nice food, carpet, paintings on walls - but really poor Medical Care ...especially if you are too 'difficult' an operation then you are shipped back to the Public where BETTER Medical care can be given.

Private schools in Australia exist because the public system is crap - not the other way around. If you hate private schools so much then lobby to have the public syetem adopt the Finish model. Within 10 years there would be little demand for private schools here and you can get your wish. But remember that the Finns already spend LESS per head on theier education system than we do in our publci system so the problem isnt money - its how it is done that is the problem.

You could increase public school funding by 50% and nothing would change because funding isnt the problem. Finland has a 23% VAT (GST) and a top marginal tax rate of 29% and a company tax rate of 26%.

With a 23% GST Aust could maybe afford to pump extra cash into education, hospitals etc.

The Fins employ the top brass teachers which are better paid than lawyers and doctors. That's the first thing that needs to change is the calibre of the teachers.

that's bullshit. It has got nothing to do with genetics. It has more to do with culture and what value we put on a decent education  which is f.ckall in this country when aussie rules is the top news headlines each night and you have people of the likes of lindsay fox getting on tv and telling everyone how he made it in the big time with a grade 5 education.

actually it isnt. the FIRST thing (and something you conveniently forget) is the finnish schools have autonomy. They have the right to hire and fire and spend their govt funds the way THEY see fit - just like private schools. IN fact blunt-nail the Finnihs system that you aore so much is pretty much EXACTLY like our private system where teachers are paid more, respected more and the schools have autonomy. IN your typica lfashion, you have actually PRAISED the school system you are opposing.

The Finnish government doesn't have to pay extra to a private school to build swimming pools or indoor hockey courts etc nor are the students forced to wear stupid uniforms so the the Finnish education system is poles apart from the private education system here.

The Finnish teachers usually have masters degrees and are paid more than lawyers and doctors. That means their course is a lot more involved than the watered down bullshit that we have here and that's why they have autonomy because the teachers are high up the ladder to start with and can run a school responsibly without outside intervention.

And that means your daughter wouldn't even get into the starting gate at a Finnish school !! Her resume would be thrown straight into the rubbish bin as it should be !!

MOST of the religious organisations are no more corrupt than the governments....

If they were held back, there would be an overwhelming number of eight, nine and ten year old's in grade one. That wouldn't work either.

There must be more time spent on the basics in the lower years, a lot more time, even if it means no religion, Auskick or science.

Even an extra two lessons per day would improve the outcomes.

Less waste of time, more reading, writing and arithmetic. Lift our game now, before we have a whole generation of illiterates.

I was working in the classroom earlier this year, and I was gobsmacked by the standard of education. Grade3, and some kids not being able to write simple three letter words, other kids trying to read books with three one syllable words. The red truck.....couldn't do it, way, way, way behind the eight ball.

I was born 12 years after you (1963)...and when I was at school, if you didn't make the 'cut' , you didn't go up a grade...we ALL learned to read, write and count in kindergarten or Grade 1...

It was extremely sad nail. What chance will those kids have of getting a job when they drop out at age 14? They are totally let down by the system, there just isn't enough staff to give them the extra time they need to become literate. They will follow in their parents footsteps and lead a life on benefits. Now is the time to break the cycle of dependence, but we don't do it.

Our little one is just finishing prep and can read a write above the standard you describe here.

She’s in public school and has read over 60 books (home work) AT HOME this year.

Parents MUST take a lot of responsibility to ensure their kid’s educations are nurtured AT HOME as well as at school.

.....with miles of beautiful sandy beaches and wild life to die for, and not a mine in sight. It's every retirees dream home. Also suitable for long term unemployment recipients, although the rent's a bit hexy, they'd need to share.

No one rushes in my neck of the woods, it's a lay back and enjoy lifestyle. It will be even better when Can-do Campbell gets the flick.

The wall is a good idea, to keep the mining companies out.  This town survives on benefits because there's no work, but there's plenty of entertainment and water sports. Great for the outdoorsy type. It depends what you want, stress or peace and quiet.

I said I've been to Townsville, you're not all upper caste, so you're fooling nobody. Your town survives on mining, which incidentally is going from boom to bust and military, and we all know how they behave when they've had a few sherries under their belts.

The entire town talks up the strand, it's the most nothing place I've been to.

Umm ::), I know I was edu-ma-kated in Mt Druitt,
but the answer is 'of course'.
The point is that those who wanted to become Tradespeople had to 'drop out' of an Education System along with all the 'drop-outs' who just dropped out of life altogether or just to pump out heaps of kids at an early age ...which I shouldn't be too harsh on because its very hard to raise kids in Oz - just look at our pathetic population growth falling off balconies in the Gold Coast.  ::)

So the kids wanting to be Tradies not only had a 'drop-out' tag tied to their name, they didn't really have a universal education system in place until night Tech became TAFE and then TAFE was eventually taken seriously only around the year 2000.

I remember going to TAFE as a MAS, and all the younger teenagers straight out of High School deemed themselves 'losers' for going to TAFE and not Uni. I had to tell them, that they are CLEVER rather than SMART and both are equal in their worth.
I found that the TAFE 'Art' course I was doing was far better than what I knew of any Uni Course on off - mostly because 80% of the time you actually got to DO some Art rather than just research, read, write about Art and Artists, etc.

Huge jump in South Australia's unemployment rate

SOUTH Australia recorded the worst increase in unemployment in the nation in June, climbing 1.2 percentage points to 6.4 per cent, seasonally adjusted.

Quite often I'm the only person on the beach on week days. The unemployed surfers stay up the other end, blessed they are.

But a question would be "can you put together an opinion or post that isnt referring back to for or holden or the church or 'libbos'? ' evidence suggest that you dont actually have any opinions of your own other that 'hate this or hate that'. it makes you a very ugly person to evryone except booby.

teachers are increasingly getting in with terrible marks (OP 17 in some colledges in qld) that puts some teachers in the bottom 1/2 of their own school rankings.

i'm smart enough to teach my kids a bit of extra physics chemistry and maths B.

same as sport, if you had a really great sporting kid, you wouldnt just leave it all up to the phys ed teacher.

another great opportunity to get ahead.

the top schools in brisbane (academically) are both strict lutheran, have school on saturdays, full of asians with lap tops,  then again, they do have a higher suicide rate.

i'd rather put the kids in a slightly less aggressive school but still surrounded by quality kids and then grill em in the car and the boat with endless rounds of "who wants to be a millionaire'

kids are like dogs and horse.
get the environment right and they LOVE to learn.

smack it up and you end up with a useless dog or a bucking biting horse  ;)

I think he means so that the rich kids get to go to school, and the poor kids get to stay home. Much like privatising the electricity, where only the wealthy can afford to have it. Sort of like India and Africa.

Finland wouldn't agree probably because they know that private schools are run by scammers who take tax payers money and build swimming pools instead of educating people properly.

quite the contrary, neggo-nail. Finland actually took the PRIVATE model of education and applied it to their public sector. THAT's why it works. take a look... everything that makes a Finiish public school successful are the same elements that private schools operate on.

So isnt it amazing how what you said was 100% wrong and the complete reverse was actually true.
