Title: Police - Death in Custody - Alice Springs NT Post by RedRoses on Nov 7th, 2012 at 6:12pm
Hi all, another recent death in custody in the Northern Territory has occurred recently and has sparked a debate.
In the recent online addition of the NT news, you are able to view the Coroners report unfortunately, I am unable to provide a link. Would love to hear your opinions if you have the time to read the coroners report. You will have to manually search NT News. Story published Police slammed over Briscoe death AAP | September 17th, 2012 If only I could link. Threads useless without! |

Pansi,
Thankyou for posting that. Yes indeed that is the report I was refering to. There is also a link that shows CCTV footage in the watch house. Was starting to think this thread would be a disaster without it. Thanks again for taking the time to look for it and hopefully for having a good read. Should make for an interesting discussion. |

alcohol, alcohol, alcohol
that is the problem. this guy had 31 previous admissions to the watch house for public drunkeness and drinking related offenses. i was at wooribinda , an aboriginal reserve in central qld when premier wayne goss proudly opened the canteen there (previously it had been a dry community). better to have a bit of paternalism and just ban grog, just ban it. they would be better off smoking weed. not fair to blame the police for looking after someone with a blood alcohol of .31 who really should be in hospital, but then i'm sure they couldnt build enough hospitals to house all the drunks. currently the biggest hospital in the southern hemisphere (royal brisbane) has 4 acute beds for drying out alcoholics. drunks have fits, vomit aspirate. it is a very toxic drug. BAN, BAN, BAN if they dont want to ban then dont scapegoat the cops who are not doctors and nurses. |

We should ban deaths in custody. But why stop there - lets' ban death altogether.

That's ok. I saw the footage before, clearly unnecessary police brutality. I can't see the need for excessive force when the person is that drunk, it's not like he had the ability to hurt the cops in any way. He didn't commit any offences; he was taken to the watch house for protection. It seems "protective custody" isn't very protective. Would it be too difficult to erect a purpose built establishment for 'drying out'? Say a 20-30 bed unit that would be managed and staffed by both white and Aboriginal people. Maybe some nursing staff and some carers. What I'm saying is there should be other options so that inebriated people are not left to die in a police cell. I think they already have these places, so why wasn't he taken there? |

When does a person stop and think about modifying their behaviour? Is it after the 10th arrest? Maybe the 12th arrest? When are people going to accept responsibility for their lifestyle? And the big question is - following the blitz on fags - when will the government stop the heavy promotion of alcohol? If one drug is bad why not the other drug? Why not darken the windows of all the Dan Murphy and BWS stores so people can't see the product? I have never been arrested. Am I doing something wrong? |

Not sure about them being inevitable. Standard operating procedures are put in place as a safe guard. Obviously this could have been avoided if they were followed. Have a read of the coroners report. Tell me if you still believe this case was inevitable. It really is a good read. Also the petition has gained momentum. |

coroners are great at gazing down the retrospect o scope. they love analysing real time situations where there are enormous ammounts of chaos going on and instant decisions are neccessary. usually they recommend protocols involving lots of forms with boxes that need to be ticked to keep everyone safe. this of course is complete BS as the last thing you want is cops or other people in charge of acute crisis concentrating on getting the paperwork right. no good telling that to the legal sh#t heads who have never faced a crisis bigger than a slightly tepid capucino or a scratch in their merc. >:( >:( |
