Title: Even experts don't know
Post by Maqqa on Nov 3rd, 2012 at 8:21am
http://au.news.yahoo.com/latest/a/-/latest/15289155/sandy-worsened-by-climate-change-report/

Australia's Climate Commission says superstorm Sandy was made worse by climate change.

The death toll in the United States has passed 90 in 10 states, bringing to more than 150 the number killed by Sandy since it swept across the Caribbean, including Haiti and Cuba.

"The evidence suggests that climate change exacerbated the severity of Hurricane Sandy," the chairman of the Climate Commission's science advisory panel, Professor Matthew England, said in a new report.

"The shifts in climate towards higher temperatures and more moisture in the air are becoming the new normal, which is influencing the nature and intensity of weather patterns around the world."

Prof England said storm surges had a particularly devastating impact on areas of the US coast and a warmer world, with higher sea levels, would make such surges worse.

Before reaching land, Sandy was feeding off exceptionally warm surface waters in the Atlantic Ocean.

The temperature of the surface waters from which Sandy was drawing energy was three to five degrees warmer than average, the commission reported.

Also, the base sea level had risen by about 20cm over the past century.

"A rise of 20cm may seem modest, but even small rises like this lead to a large increase in the probability of damaging floods," the commission reported.

"The primary reason for rising sea levels around the world is climate change, which warms and thus expands the oceans and adds more water to the ocean by melting glaciers and ice caps."

The commission brings together internationally renowned climate scientists with policy and business leaders.

at the end of the day America ever since I can remember has had the worst of the worst weather.

tornadoes come to mind.. and they have had them since records were kept well before the industrial era..

I am sure it couldnt possibly have anything to do with Mother Nature..

how do we define the WORST... is it the amount of houses destroyed or people lost..cant be cost because who could judge that?

maybe they are just looking for something to blame... we like doing that now.

I am disappointed our Climate Commission didnt say that gillards CARBON TAX will stop all that happening again..its time to take credit for that dont you think?

Labor and the Coalition all have policies to bring our CO2 emissions down to the same levels in the same time frame and around the same cost.
Complain as much as you like but Australia and the world are moving towards real action on CO2 pollution and the recent catastrophic weather events have only proved that we have no time to lose.

The US two 200 year weather events inside 7 years, Qld two 100 year floods in 2 years.

We should be OK for a few centuries now, wanna bet?

I dont think so. Earth has been cooling all the time. The "ice age" was only in 1 part of the world and warmed when the axis changed and the poles shifted. it wasnt a worldwide cooling.

I WILL LEAVE THAT FOR YOU AND ALL THOSE SC IENTISTS THAT BELIEVE not the ones that dont of course..will you be around in a century or two dna???...LOL.. good luck with that...

wont be long before gillard is making policies for the next century,... hilarious.

so when can we expect gillard CARBON TAX to stop these hurricanes  and tornadoes.????? have the scientists you believe in given you a time zone yet dna.???... it helps those that think the world will come to an end...real soon...

do you know what dna... even that ipad you are using will well and truly be obsolete in the near future..goes along with cars as we know them and planes.and trains....all obsolete...factories will be long gone..yes I can see into the future..

all the things you claim are destroying the planet will be gone through plain old fashioned advancement by good old human beings.

.sorry to disappoint you I know you worry so much about .....what was it..200 years hence?

A lot of which ,like NY,has never had storms like it. You make sh it up as you go, you choose to ignore the overwhelming majority of scientists to believe a couple of retards, that's your prerogative, what's not your prerogative is to expect the rest of us to sit by and let our kids suffer a future where they will see unmentionable catastrophes as a result of ignorant morons ignoring reality.

Title: Re: Even experts don't know
Post by adelcrow on Nov 3rd, 2012 at 10:04am
The deniers are also ignoring the fact that much of the USA was crippled by record drought this year on top of increasing hurricanes and violent and more frequent catastrophic weather events.
The choice is ours, do something now to slow down and stop climate change or do nothing and watch the planet ruined for the next generation and beyond.
Ive of the opinion that this is much more important than political games and Tony Abbotts or Julia Gillards future job prospects.

Why would you ask me to prove something I didn't say?

I think that when we are seeing 100 year weather events every few months it is telling us something about climate change?

Funny that many seem to suggest that the science which well over 90% of the scientists agree with is invalid and similtaniously dismiss the fact that most of the're there their  weather predictions are being fulfilled in terms of extreme variations and frequency of events.

Ahh the call to 'concensus', it's like some type of new Paganism.

Please tell more about these 100 year 'weather' events occurring every few months.

Yeah and funny enough that the world of academia where lots of these scientists learnt there knowledge is CONSIDERABLY AND POLITICALLY PRO LEFT WORLDWIDE, And so because of this there is considerable cause to be skepitical on how science, the politicians and the media have turned and twisted what is just a theory to an unfounded paranoia which is served by ridiculous government policies over it

I was referring to the fact that the planet is cooling - you know over millions of years - magma in the middle . . .. not recent climate change.

However i still dont see how you got your assumption.
