You can buy your way to Rhodes ... you can never buy a VC (unless its as a collectable)

Military honors are a contradiction in terms, people should never be honored for participating in war and contributing to the economy of war, Killing and death...I condemn war, aggression and violence and all who resort to it... 8-) 8-)

It isn't about honouring participation in a war - it's about honouring brave, courageous acts during the war because once involved (whether the participant wants to be there or not) they do their best to survive and the latest VC recipient went well beyond just surviving. He made himself a target to take attention away from a fallen comrade. That's brave beyond words. |

Is being a chess Grand Master the equivalent of being the world heavyweight boxing champion? Or vice versa?

VC's are becoming like the word 'hero', we are lowering our standards and increasing the propaganda, all for the glory of the war machine.
Next they'll be giving them out just for signing on. I wonder who will be the first Al Qaeda soldier to get an American bravery award. Thousands of our men went to Vietnam, how many VC's were given? Hundreds in Afghanistan and they've already toppled the Vietnam record. The prospect of a VC could get the boys to sign up, after all, being used as fodder by your government should be worth something. If you survive it you get a medal, if you don't , you get a state funeral, win win. If you're a soldier that fought in Vietnam, you'd be lucky to get a pension. O how times change. |

One thing we do know for a fact, being a rhodes scholar still doesn't enable a person to be able to read electricity bills, or more accurately, be able to interpret those pesky tricky bar graphs.

As soon as the publicity from this one dies down, the next one gets awarded. There will be more, watch this space. Ok, so a small number of skirmishes in Afghanistan for a high number of VC's, compared to a large number of battles in Vietnam for few VC's. So, let's say the government has learnt from Vietnam, this time they are making heroes of the soldiers, rather than the indifference they showed to the Viet soldiers, but most were conscripts so the government didn't have to suck up to them. |

You manage to become more ignorant and willing post the most moronic statements with each passing week. You make the world a little more stupid with each passing comment. Your first post was totally wrong or a lie and you see fit to post a second, equally as wrong, so well done there. ;D Keith Payne comment on this only this week and he, both a VN Vet and a VC recipient, stated the exact opposite to your stupid remarks. Read a friggen newspaper every now and again. |

Isn't freedom of speech great, it gives people the chance to express a different opinion, one without hidden agenda's. He's right, the standards have been lowered, but then again the standards to get into the ADF has been lowered.
...................................................................... Jeff Kennett slammed for questioning Victoria Cross standards FORMER Victorian premier Jeff Kennett has been accused of peddling "nonsense" for questioning whether the standards of the Victoria Cross were slipping after a third VC was awarded in the Afghanistan campaign. Mr Kennett said before yesterday's announcement of Corporal Daniel Keighran's VC that he could not be sure that the VC was still being awarded for the very highest acts of bravery, given only four VCs were awarded in the much larger Vietnam War. All anyone needs to get a Rhodes Scholarship are the right recommendations by the right people.
In fact someone like Abbott who came from a wealthy family that could easily afford to pay for his university fees at Oxford is a disgrace for taking a scholarship from much a needier student. Its just another reason why not to vote for the wife bashing scumbag. |

A rhodes scholar just got a free education. Basically.
Of course a rhodes scholar is NOT better than a poor african kid who wasnt educated @ all. Nothing makes them actually "better. Just more educated. SOB |
