The Greens have backed Labor for another four-year term in the Australian Capital Territory.

Labor will govern for another four years in the Australian Capital Territory, after Greens MLA Shane Rattenbury announced his support for Katy Gallagher's government.

Labor and the Canberra Liberals won eight seats each in the October 20 election, with Mr Rattenbury holding the only other seat in the 17-seat assembly.

Both parties won 38.9 per cent of the primary vote, but on numbers, the Liberals were 41 votes ahead of Labor out of more than 221,000 formal ballots cast.

Mr Rattenbury said he had conducted negotiations with both leaders with "goodwill".

"My decision about who to form government with was based on good policy and the capacity to deliver stable government in the ACT over the next four years," he told reporters in Canberra on Friday.

"I have decided to support Katy Gallagher and the Labor party into government in the ACT for the next four years."

He said a 100-item agreement would be signed, including support for a light rail project for Canberra.

The ACT assembly will meet on Tuesday for the first time since the election.

Mr Rattenbury was left shouldering the Greens agenda on his own after the party, which previously held four seats and supported the Labor government, suffered a 4.9 per cent swing against it.

Mr Rattenbury said the light rail project would transform Canberra, cut greenhouse emissions and ease traffic congestion.

He said Labor had agreed to legislate for gay marriage in the ACT, following the failure of the federal parliament to pass such laws.

Mr Rattenbury has also agreed to accept a cabinet post in the government.

"I believe it is time after 17 years of the ACT Greens being represented in the legislative assembly and on the crossbench for the ACT Greens to play a role in government," he said.

"I want this to be the most progressive and green government in Australia.

"Having the responsibility of a minister I believe I can help achieve that."

even the Greens admitting it was a terrible result.

I think the election was great for two reasons. The first is that the Greens lost 3 out of 4 seats which is a good indicator nation wide of their vote going down the toilet. The second is that it shows people once again that a vote for the Greens is a vote for Labor. The Green had made up his mind on election night but wanted to make it seem like he was actually considering the Libs but it was all a going through the motions farce. He was always going to go Labor.

This poll has labor and the Greens worried. Despite polls suggesting that there is a lift in labor's vote, this election was the worst EVER result for labor and greens. This has given them pause to think that perhaps the federal polls are very soft and that the actual result is nowhere near as close.

Better than Abbott for sure. I still can't shake the uneasy feeling that Abbott is going to get in. The Libs will likely stick with him now, imagine the field day Labor and the media would have if they didn't. And recent polls like the ACT don't give much hope. If Labor are getting just as much vote as the Libs there, in the most left-wing state or territory, it isn't helpful, especially when polls suggested a comfortable Labor win. You've conflated three different positions. Compassion does not automatically equal grass-roots democracy, and neither of those positions equate to equality.
Grass-roots democracy could produce any number of ideas, even ones that may not be based in compassion or equality. To presuppose that it would lead to compassion or equality is to dictate ahead what people ought to think and believe in.
Democracy is the last thing on the Greens' mind.

Compassion does not automatically equal grass-roots democracy, and neither of those positions equate to equality. Grass-roots democracy could produce any number of ideas, even ones that may not be based in compassion or equality. To presuppose that it would lead to compassion or equality is to dictate ahead what people ought to think and believe in. Democracy is the last thing on the Greens' mind.

They're three separate, independent entities.

I can see the facts. I just hope that they're not replicated at the federal election. Hopefully Adam Bandt will retain his seat and we will see more Green senators. The best outcome for Australia is a continuation of a minority Labor-Green government. As someone said earlier though, the most important thing is that Abbott doesn't get into the Lodge.
