Title: SBS SAT NIGHTS-Boardwalk Empire/Prohibition
Post by Emma Peel on Oct 13th, 2012 at 10:15pm
Been watching SBS  Sat Nights , 'cos, don't know about you, but I can't afford to go out at the mo.!!

They have put together a really gripping  double/triple, presentation...... ...with  'Prohibition....  '  an excellent documentary on the whole Prohibition era of history...
-  followed by two episodes of this incredibly well- executed   IMO   period drama,' Boardwalk Empire'   ...  set in the same prohibition era.
What makes it particularly interesting is having had a look at the reality , in the previous Doc...
what could be seen by many to be purely fictitious takes on an awful authority.. !!, in this addictive 'Boardwalk Empire'.

There are  some luminaries in the cast, who play it to the hilt.

We are re-living it today...  fascinating ! and informative.

Highly recommended. :)

Try watching Jack Irish, tonight on ABC1
Based on excellent novels by Australia's Peter Temple.... well worth reading,  and  with Guy Pierce in the lead roll, should be good viewing.
Hope so....anyway.

And I've really been enjoying  Ahn Does Vietnam...

Funny and fascinating..!!
Last week he checked out the legendary tunnels.....and the Mekong , and the people who live on it... and lots more. Well worth a try... :)

The Battle Castle series is also  v good...

BUT I THINK the episode on 'The Crac Du Chevaliers '  would have to be the best ever doc I've seen about ancient history, particularly in respect of the period of the Crusades and the war  between Christians and Muslims.........with this  massive structure as the central focus..!

the story of this mighty fortress is just mindblowing.

A MUST SEE...!

IMO  :)

well - I thought Jack Irish was excellent...
look forward to the next episode.

Guy Pierce  does a credible portrayal of Jack Irish.... a believable characterisation of a difficult and complex personality. It would have been good to know more about his  past, but this is television, after all.

Sadly, the visual media never quite reaches the depths that the written word achieves... very much is left to the individual viewers interpretation, whereas the written work usually fills in the nuances that film never can... at least, not without a disembodied narrator, or a brilliant director and a very perceptive audience..

Good books,..by Peter Temple...   and this ABC presentation does do some justice to the works of the author.
