Title: Got my first leccy bill since the Carbon Tax
Post by Upton Sinclair on Sep 21st, 2012 at 3:00pm
Barely noticeable among the normal fluctuations (seasonal use differences, number of people in the house etc) of the yearly bill cycle. The last test of the dreaded Carbon tax Apocalypse, the point where the doom was to finally be brought home has fizzled out again. No wonder the people are turning against Abbott; the boy who cried wolf..

And the Reserve Bank agrees, the carbon tax has had ZERO infaltionary effect on the economy!

Quote:
The federal government says the minutes of the latest Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) board meeting have exposed Opposition Leader Tony Abbott's deceptive scare campaign against Labor's carbon tax.

The RBA on Tuesday released the minutes from its September 4 board meeting on monetary policy.

"The introduction of the carbon price had not yet had a significant effect on downstream price pressures," the minutes state.

"There was no evidence the carbon price had raised medium-term inflation expectations."

Climate Change Minister Greg Combet said the minutes proved the opposition leader had been trying to mislead the public.

"Mr Abbott said the carbon price would lead to 'unimaginable' increases in the cost of living, but now the carbon price is in the RBA says there is no evidence of any significant inflationary impact," Mr Combet told AAP in a statement.

"Mr Abbott has no credible policy to tackle climate change and has been exposed for running a destructive and deceptive scare campaign."

The climate change minister insisted Labor was taking economically responsible action to tackle climate change.

Householders were being looked after with tax cuts, pension increases and higher family benefits, Mr Combet said.

Labor made further gains on the coalition in two opinion polls out this week as anger over the carbon tax waned and Liberal state budget cuts have rebound on Mr Abbott.

Why doesn't the content of the post ever match the heading of the post with you people?

Exactly. These leftards are dumb, Bigol64. How can they not notice the phenomenal rise in their bills?

And it's not just electricity bills, it's everything. I heard on Alan that prices are going to rise 180% - across the board.

It's clear: The economy just can't sustain the carbon tax. Mr Abbott will have to try to do something about it.

The heading is about his electricity bill. The post is about his electricity bill. Seems a pretty close match to me. Should there have been more? Less?

My first electricity bill post carbon tax was way down on last years for the same period. I'm sure it was misread, but I'm not complaining.

Bigole's prossie could be called leccy.

I know cods, and pumpkin $4 a kilo, frekkin pumpkin, throw some seeds in the ground and they'll grow like weeds.

It's inflation and the prices will keep going up and up. The rising cost of living. I don't actually see many people buying those expensive veges though, they must be learning to live without them. We're lucky in that we have a wide range so we can still get some cheap fruit and veges, even if they're not our preferred variety.

'Unfair' power price rises under review

Date
    September 22, 2012

MANY households are being overcharged for electricity, the consumer watchdog suspects.     :(

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission is investigating the legality of contracts some households have signed with their power supplier.

It wants to know whether consumers are enduring unjustified price rises.

Under contracts many households have signed, there is a clause allowing the company to raise prices whenever it wishes.     :(

Sometimes price rises may be justified but the ACCC has received a rising number of complaints about unjustified rises.

''We are investigating the issue,'' its chairman, Rod Sims, said. ''We will take note of how companies are passing through higher costs.''

Referring to the need to pass on changes in network charges - which rise as part of a regular government review, and which are automatically passed on to all customers - Mr Sims said: ''We have no problem with contracts allowing retailers to vary their price.

''There are some contracts which give the right to increase prices for any reason. We are looking to see if this can be an 'unfair contract' which is not allowed under the law.     :o

''Much depends on how this clause is used. If it is used to recoup the original discounted offer, we would be concerned. It has been brought to our attention, with a number of complaints.''

As part of the investigation, the watchdog is also looking at the lack of transparency with some price rises.

With more and more families on individual contracts, they often have no way of knowing whether a decision by their electricity company to raise charges midway through a contract is valid or not.     :(

This could result in electricity companies having to advertise planned price rises.

For the consumer group Choice, the way households have become locked into electricity contracts with their supplier free to raise prices is similar to banks blocking customers on variable mortgages from moving to cheaper lenders, which has now been banned.

''How meaningful is the contract if the retailer has the discretion to raise prices at any time?'' Matt Levey from Choice said.

''You sign up to get 10 per cent off, yet they can raise the prices at any time - and charge you a fee if you move.''     :(

Electricity companies point to the record number of households changing supplier as proof of increasing competition.

''Switching doesn't necessarily have positive outcomes for consumers,'' Mr Levey said. Following recent steep power price rises, Choice has launched a campaign, Take the Power Back, urging consumers to write to their state and federal energy minister seeking reform.

We might have to go frozen with the veges cods. I've heard that NZ get the veg from China then package them, so country of origin could be wrong, not sure. I'm over trying to find out where foodstuffs originate. I haven't got food poisoning yet, so I'm not all that worried now.

Aldi are still cheapest supermarket in town, far cheaper than the big two. They've had 250g punnets of strawberries, big dark red, delicious strawbs for $1 for weeks now. The next cheapest I have seen was $1.50, that doesn't look like much, but it's a 50% mark up.

Remember when we could eat the cheapest mince meat? now it's only fit for animal food. You'd have to cook it for a week to get the fat out before it could be used for human consumption.

As for fruit and vegies what we dont grow ourselves we buy from the organic markets..Its been many years since we've bought fruit and veg from a supermarket
As for meat there is an organic ethical butcher on Magill Rd not far from Chris Pynes office thats well worth a look.

FOOD AND NON-ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES GROUP (+0.6%)

The food and non-alcoholic beverages group rose in the June quarter 2012. The main contributors to the rise were vegetables (+5.2%), fruit (+3.8%), snacks and confectionery (+3.2%) and take away and fast foods (+1.0%). The rise in vegetable and fruit prices was mainly due to cooler weather conditions with rain and flooding affecting crops in the eastern states. This rise was partially offset by falls in cakes and biscuits (-2.8%), bread (-3.1%) and other food products n.e.c. (-2.6%).

Over the twelve months to the June quarter 2012, the food and non-alcoholic beverages group fell 3.2%

The SMART shopper ONLY buys fruit & veg in season

"Spuds" at fifty cents a kilo - can't be beaten

The SMART shopper ONLY buys meat when it is marked down between 25 to 40% - and then takes the WHOLE LOT home to put in the freezer

sounds wonderful and lucky you.. that has all gone by the wayside on this side of the continent..we have whats called markets in ACT but in fact they are just shops.. and in most cases their fruit and veggies are dearer than anywhere else..why would you bother? but people still do thinking is fresher than anywhere else... ha,ha..

organic again costs the earth here..sad really because its the only thing that has any flavor as far as I am concerned..however as I say I dont even look...its too depressing..

as pansi says half the frozen doesnt come from where they claim it does.. dont know about anyone else but the thought of veggies being grown in sewage farms.. is a proper turn off for me..and thats where they grow in China..

Don't do it cods, fast food has no food value, it's full of trans fats, it will shorten your life. It's ok for an occasional treat???? but don't make a habit of it.

Buy a loaf of grain bread, vegemite and a block of cheese, that's lunch for a week and much better for you and probably cheaper than seven happy meals.

... but this NEVER occurs to DIM-WITTED WHINGERS

I do a mental costing of each meal as I am cooking
It usually comes out at around $2 for a gourmet grade, "all you can eat" sized serve

( ... the same serve of junk food is THREE to FOUR TIMES the cost)

Don't be silly, John Smith. Clearly there is one thing and one thing only that can cause price inflation; the dreaded CARBON TAX!

Compared to how much for the same quarter last year? I'm guessing no less than $640. I'm sure an extra $0.75 out of the daily budget is really breaking the proverbial camels back for your poor tenants, huh?  ::)

No, it's absurd. Either you're telling porkies or your tenants need to learn how to better manage their gas consumption. Either way, the issue isn't the total amount but rather the difference for what they would have paid for the same gas during the same quarter in the previous year. The fact of the matter is that, at most, the carbon tax might have added $70 or so to their quarterly bill (probably much less seeing as we're talking about gas rather than electricity). And if they are people who are earning enough to not warrant compensation (as I'm assuming that's what you are insinuating with your following post) then I hardly think an additional $0.75 on top of their daily budget is exactly breaking the bank. Do you?

They're probably silver spooners, I've seen them leave the sprinkler on 24/7, no matter that we're in a drought. They waste valuable resources because they can.

All the building work we are having done on our place on the south coast is costing no more after the carbon tax so I cant see the issue.
In fact the housing slowdown means we have tradies lining up to do the work where as this time last year it was the opposite..good for consumers and good for employers.

Yup. The impost of the carbon price to consumers is so small as to be well within the range of normal price fluctuations, hence why it has had ZERO inflationary pressure on the economy thusfar :)

Compared to how much for the same quarter last year? I'm guessing no less than $640. I'm sure an extra $0.75 out of the daily budget is really breaking the proverbial camels back for your poor tenants, huh?  ::)

$710 for one quarter of gas.

Its not meant to affect ordinary ppls energy use. It is meant to stop the big guys from making too much pollution. Of course this is not going to work because everyone was compensated and they passed on the costs. Whole thing cancelled out.

but it does make a difference .. energy suppliers have already announced record investments in renewable energies, numbers they wouldn't have considered before the carbon tax was announced .... and that number would be even higher if they didn't think Abbott would repeal the carbon tax once he won office ...

Hopefully a bit of everything .. we aren't going to develop any of them until you put money into them .. sure, some aren't perfect , but put money into them, develop them, change them and the end product will be vastly different to todays options.... look at the first pc? what if someone decided it was cheaper to pay 5 accountants than it was to build a computer that was the size of a room with very limited processing power ... where would we be today?

good point. but there would be a lot more money to invest if people weren't compensated but were made to be mindful of their non-renewable energy use.
it's like if there is a $100 fine for speeding but everyone who is speeding gets compensated but car manufacturers have to pay extra tax for making faster cars. it's a bit silly.

It's not supposed to change consumer behaviour, that's why consumers don't pay the tax, it is designed to change the behaviour of the 500 highest polluting companies who DO pay the tax.

I'll take evidence over common-sense assumptions any day of the week.

As a business you've always got an incentive to cut costs, if you can make a saving on your tax by investing in ways to reduce the impost. And it's not as easy as just passing on the cost, you can only pass on so much before you consumer goes to your competitor who has a vested interest in passing on as little of the cost as possible

i don't get it. the government is paying coal fired power stations compensation. but la trobe uni, which generates its own power, is taxed as a polluter.

Quote:
The program was meant to shut down about 2000 megawatts of highly emissions-intensive generation capacity by 2020.

Negotiations involved Hazelwood, Yallourn and Energy Brix power stations in Victoria, as well as Playford in South Australia and Collinsville in Queensland.

The Australian Conservation Foundation said it was a ‘‘central plank’’ of Labor’s carbon price regime.
‘‘If these dirty old clunkers are not shut down the companies that own them certainly don’t deserve $5.5 billion in handouts from the taxpayer for nothing,’’ foundation spokesman Tony Mohr said in a statement.

Four stations in Victoria’s Latrobe Valley mid-year received the lion’s share of $1 billion to help coal-fired generators cope with the carbon tax.

Hazelwood received $266 million and Yallourn pocketed $257 million in the first tranche of assistance from the $5.5 billion energy security fund.

Opposition climate action spokesman Greg Hunt says the government had ‘‘contradictory funds’’ - one to shut down power stations and another to help them remain viable.

‘‘It is no wonder the scheme collapsed,’’ he said in a statement.

the big coal-based power stations get compensation, a university using natural gas to produce its own power gets taxed as a 'a big polluter'.

does this make sense? not to me.

Of course you do Spot. If you reduce your costs, the money saved goes to PROFIT. Which is what you're in business for. So they have a very big incentive to find ways to cut their tax bill. Every big business is always looking for ways to reduce their expenses for this very reason.

When companies change to renewable energy they can sell the surplus carbon credits.....Until they reduce emissions they continue paying for their carbon output.....It makes economic sense to reduce emissions reduce costs and sell the credits!!!

No, the baseless fearmongering campaign you engaged in was a farce. The carbon tax has had zero inflationary impact in the economy so far. Less like a wrecking ball, more like a conker.

Correct. Except that in a competitive market they can increase their market share by passing on the savings. If they could pick up say an extra $2 worth of net sales by passing on a $1 saving then they are still ahead. (These are numbers plucked out of thin air for the purpose of example)

Compensation is justly paid to those who to struggle meeting the cost of life's necessities

It is NOT there to subsidise LUXURIES of those who DON'T

Hence, compensation is fairly means tested

It's inflation and the prices will keep going up and up. The rising cost of living. I don't actually see many people buying those expensive veges though, they must be learning to live without them. We're lucky in that we have a wide range so we can still get some cheap fruit and veges, even if they're not our preferred variety.

WakeUp2TheLies.com? sounds like a reputable and balanced source of information  ::)

can you not see that the link carries a letter by prof manne of la trobe to the editor of the australian? maybe you can't. here is the letter at that link:

USING Gerard Henderson as its source, Cut & Paste (12-13/5) suggests I should be ashamed that I am employed at a university that was 131st of the nation’s top 500 carbon polluters.

La Trobe is on the list for the carbon tax because it produces its own energy from natural gas, a cleaner energy source than other fossil fuels. Our co-generation plant, which has operated since 1993, is twice as efficient as the brown coal generators that supply the rest of Victoria.

Although I had no role in the decision, the fact that we are powered by the cleanest burning fossil fuel is one reason that I am not ashamed, but proud to be a member of La Trobe University.

Robert Manne, La Trobe University, Vic

it is one thing to be passionate. it is not the same as being blinkered. you have passed the test for the former with flying colours and you are now within a toucher of the latter. a big disservice to your cause.

So you're telling me that LaTrobe has it's own commercial co-generation plant but that you think it should be exempt from paying the carbon price?

LA TROBE UNIVERSITY AND THE CARBON TAX

24 May 2012

La Trobe University has calculated it is about quarter of a million dollars better off under the new carbon tax regime because it produces energy for its Melbourne campus from its own gas-fired cogeneration plant.

‘More importantly, our carbon emissions would be much higher if we were to rely on brown coal generators that supply most of the rest of Victoria,’ says Pro Vice-Chancellor (Sustainability) Professor Carol Adams.

‘So the Carbon Pricing Mechanism highlights our efforts in acting responsibly and looking after the interests of today’s students and those of future generations.’

La Trobe University’s co-generation plant produces electricity along with hot water and heating from the one natural gas energy source. It has operated for nearly two decades and is twice as carbon efficient as brown coal power generation.

With some 25,000 staff and students on the Melbourne campus, the plant serves a population the size of a small city.

‘La Trobe is the only university on the carbon tax list because we produce so much of our own energy, sometimes even selling it back into the State grid. But it’s much cleaner and less polluting energy than that produced by other fossil fuels,’ says Professor Adams.

Continuous monitoring

La Trobe continually monitors its sustainability performance, a process which involves contributions from more than 100 people from all areas of the University.

‘We publish this data annually and are one of the few universities in the world to prepare such a thorough report,’ she says. ‘Our report is verified by external assurers and uses the Global Reporting Initiative at A+ application level.’

The report outlines La Trobe’s environmental, social and economic impact as well as the work it is doing through education, research and community engagement.

‘While we have plans in place to achieve long-term targets, our performance in energy and water consumption, as well as emissions resulting from staff business travel, leave room for improvement.’

To help achieve its energy use target by 2020, La Trobe has joined Victoria’s ‘Greener Government Building Program.

The latest annual report, ‘Creating Futures’ is available for here: www.latrobe.edu.au/sustainability/report

LIAR, LIAR, LIAR !

6 hours 26 minutes ago

Question Time in Federal Parliament today returned to the more regular themes of the carbon tax and the economy, after yesterday's extraordinary move to try to force Peter Slipper out of the Speaker's role.

But Labor says Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has been caught out in his use of a "pensioner's" electricity bill as part of his anti-carbon tax campaign.

In questioning the Prime Minister about Hetty Verolme's bill, Mr Abbott said the customer "nearly had a heart attack" when she got her most recent power bill.

It had more than doubled since her previous bill to $1,563 for the months of June and July, and Mr Abbott wanted to know what advice Julia Gillard had for the Perth pensioner.

He followed up with a supplementary question: "With an $800 increase in just one bill of which 70 per cent is due to the carbon tax, how can the Prime Minister possibly claim that Hetty Verolme's compensation is in any way adequate?"

Labor challenged Mr Abbott to table the bill in Parliament so it could verify Mr Abbott's claims, meaning it has now been made publicly available.

An electricity consumption graph on the side of the bill shows that most of the increase was due to a dramatic increase in power usage at Mrs Verolme's home.

It also includes a note saying that electricity prices had increased on July 1 by 2.255 cents per unit because of the carbon tax, which "represents an estimated increase of 9.13 per cent for an average daily usage of 15.89 units".

That is less than the Treasury forecast of a 10 per cent increase in electricity costs because of the carbon tax.

"Once again, the Leader of the Opposition caught out just like he was on Whyalla, caught out just like he was on the coal industry, caught out just like he was on lamb roasts, peddling fear (and) peddling reckless negativity," Ms Gillard told Parliament.

"The one thing you'll never hear from the Leader of the Opposition is anything that sounds like the truth about carbon pricing.

"The Opposition knows that the increase around the country has been what was predicted - 10 per cent or less."
