What successes do you think the libs will have if they win next term?

The word 'success' is a subjective one sprint.
I'm sure the Labor/Greens lot will use a very different assessment tool to the rest of us. :)

Australian economy leads the world
Jessica Wright
April 18, 2012 .

Australia has the strongest economy in the developed world and it is expected to outperform all comers for at least the next two years, according to the International Monetary Fund.

The IMF - which issued its World Economic Outlook in Washington overnight - said it expected the Australian economy to expand by 3 per cent this year as fiscal tensions from Europe and the United States continue to ease.

The body stated that after a major setback last year with the Eurozone crisis, the global prospect of far more stable financial conditions was gradually improving.

The update said that it expects the Australian economy will outstrip growth over all other advanced economies over the next two years, noting we live in a region where exposure to troubled European banks was less than for other parts of the world.

But it also warned that Australia was exposed to risk if economic conditions in the Middle East caused another oil price spike.

The organisation revised up its global growth forecasts, with the global economy expected to grow by 3.5 per cent in 2012, up from 3.3 per cent in the January update.

A forecast of global growth of 4.1 per cent in 2013 has also been revised up from 3.9 per cent.

Global growth continues to be underpinned by solid growth in Asia, the report said.

China's economy was expected to grow 8.2 per cent in 2012 and 8.8 per cent in 2013, while India was expected to grow 6.9 per cent in 2012 and 7.3 per cent in 2013. These forecasts were broadly unchanged from the IMF's January update.

The IMF also forecasts Australia's unemployment rate to remain low at 5.2 per cent in both 2012 and 2013.

"With solid growth, low unemployment, contained inflation, strong public finances and a record pipeline of business investment, the Australian economy is the standout performer of the developed world"

The government has hit out at Opposition leader Tony Abbott for ''getting it wrong'' on the IMF growth forecasts.

During a morning doorstop, Mr Abbott said the IMF report showed the local economy was ''underperforming'', as they had downgraded the economic growth forecast.

''It forecasts 3 per cent for the current financial year and it looks like we are going to get 2 per cent,'' Mr Abbott said.

''This is an underperforming economy and it's underperforming because of the poor economic management of the current government.''

But Mr Abbott's assertion was not correct, according to a spokesman for the Treasurer, who said the growth forecast of 3 per cent in 2012 had been the same since the start of the year.

OECD praise for Canberra's stimulus package
Tim Colebatch
September 17, 2009.

THE Federal Government has won glowing support for its controversial economic stimulus, with the Western world's leading think tank saying the strategy will save up to 200,000 jobs.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development's annual employment outlook says Australia will be one of the Western countries to suffer least in the global financial crisis. And it says the Government's stimulus has already had a strong effect in cushioning the downturn, undermining Opposition attacks on the size of the program.

Its data shows Australia spends just 0.01 per cent of GDP on training its unemployed - the equal lowest in the OECD along with Mexico and the Czech and Slovak republics.

They show the Howard government cut spending on active labour market programs in its last two years as the skills shortage became more acute.

By contrast, the OECD report singles out the Rudd Government's stimulus measures for praise.

It estimates Australia's stimulus has been the third largest in the Western world at 5.4 per cent of GDP, exceeded only by Korea (6.1) and the US (5.7).

''Even though many countries moved quickly to enact large fiscal stimulus packages, these packages generally have not had a strong effect in cushioning the initial decline in employment caused by the crisis, although Australia is a notable exception,'' it says.

unemployment was 3.9%. current it is 5.4% economic growth was also higher than it is currently. And I will give you the inflation one because fast growing economies often have to deal with inflation. and interest rates are only lower now because the economy is sluggish - not exactly something to crow about.

try again - this time with facts.

actually not true. and by the way, there is no premiership table for economies that you can call upon. They are dubbed this by fairly debatably consensus or opinion among some organisations.

if abbott removes carbon and mining taxes, and still plans to keep all his spending promises,  how does he plan on paying for them? cut services? he can't just cut services he will have to eliminate services altogether .... governments job is to set this country up for the future ... you can't do that without infrastructure spending or long term plans .. abbott just has a plan for the election ..... he supports the same reductions in CO2 gasses as lab, but his plan will cost 3 to 4 times as much with that money coming out of other services. Abbott gets in and we're heading for recession ... you can guarantee it

I thought Ojay went "bust" because they couldn't pay their "carbon tax" ?iVeteran fashion retailer Ojay collapses
04 September 2012
Cara Waters

Fashion retailer Ojay has collapsed, with David Coyne and Gideon Rathner of Lowe Lippmann appointed as administrators.

Ojay's administration is yet another blow to the fashion industry and follows the recent liquidation of Frat House and the collapse last year of Brown Sugar, Grab Jeans, Belinda International and Bettina Liano.

The fashion retailer was founded in 1976 and has stores in Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia, as well as being sold in David Jones.

Coyne said it was too early to reveal details of the administration.

Ojay reduced its prices by 40% last year but the move was not enough to address the fashion retailer's problems.

A spokesperson for Ojay had no comment.

David Gordon, retail specialist at WHK, said the collapse was "very sad news" for the retail sector.

"Ojay were veterans of the apparel game in Australia, with a very good reputation," says Gordon.

"I suppose you would say this is probably quite a telling indication of the impact of the quick-fashion low-price entrants into the market because their product is mostly after-five wear."

Gordon says Ojay did not have a presence with stockists such as Myer or wholesale, which would have made the business "extremely vulnerable".

DNA has correctly pointed out that Longy 's statement was incorrect.

However, the OZ unemployment rate did hit a low of 3.9% in early 2008, shortly after Labor took office and that has since been the low point of Unemployment. Being within a couple of months of the Liberals exiting office, I would still attribute them with the 3.9% low, as insufficient time had passed, for the set trend to change.

Unemployment then started to rise, as the GFC took off & it Peaked around 5.8% in July 2009, before declining to 4.9% in January 2011.

Since January 2011 the Unemployment rate has "traded" between 4.9-5.3%, which is a relatively small range and still low by historical figures over the last 30 years or so, which can also be viewed at the following site. The figure, immediately prior to the recent announce, was at 5.2% and it has now gone down to 5.1%.

As I have said previously, Baby Boomer retirements are playing a substantial part in both the "Unemployment rate" & the "Participation rate" and that will continue for several decades.

With the Boomer generation going into retirement, it can be expected that the Participation rate will be likely to Decline AND IF the Economy stays in the "status quo" bandwidth, then the Unemployment rate will decline to historic & dangerously low rates. That would apply, unless immigration is increased & increased substantially.

However, that course of action is also fraught with difficulties, as Energy, Water & Food run into Supply problems, due to an expanding Population, Climate Change & Peak Energy.

That said, IF the Local & Global Economy does go into "Recession", then the shedding of jobs which inevitably arises as an Economy slows, may continue to balance out the Unemployment rate?

Btw, notwithstanding numerous comments to the contrary, the OZ Debt to GDP ratio is actually quite LOW, given historical Local & Global standards!

These planners see things in broad ideological paradigms - the decision on who to allow to work, eat, live is something they believe the planners and social engineers should determine as though they were God... :) :)

of course govt is on a grander scale but at the end of the day.. its all budgets and preparing for the future rainy days..

if we all live on maxed out credit cards.. dont you think the govt would be concerned????????

as it is we have one of the highest credit card debts in the world.. thats nothing to be proud of..

and I am certainly not proud of a govt that thinks its ok to have a credit card of $300billion.

that is costing something like $100m a day in interest.

Could you please quote for us the Section of the Constitution that gives citizen's the right to control their food and water security?

Or did you just make that up?

The clauses of the 1297 Magna Carta which are still on statute are

Clause 9 (clause 13 in the 1215 charter), the "ancient liberties" of the City of London.
Clause 29 (clause 39 in the 1215 charter), a right to due process.

        1. FIRST, We have granted to God, and by this our present Charter have confirmed, for Us and our Heirs for ever, that the Church of England shall be free, and shall have all her whole Rights and Liberties inviolable. We have granted also, and given to all the Freemen of our Realm, for Us and our Heirs for ever, these Liberties under-written, to have and to hold to them and their Heirs, of Us and our Heirs for ever.

        9. THE City of London shall have all the old Liberties and Customs which it hath been used to have. Moreover We will and grant, that all other Cities, Boroughs, Towns, and the Barons of the Five Ports, as with all other Ports, shall have all their Liberties and free Customs.

Not the Magna Carta.

I see.  And our genetic material is inherited from single-celled life forms.  Placed in that context your posts start to make more sense!

Except even if the Magna Carta were in any way relevant to Australian Law in the way you seem to think - it still doesn't grant citizen's the right to control their food and water security, does it.  The word "citizen" is meaningless in the context of the Magna Carta.

Don't you think you should stop making things up?

Are you sure that the Head of State of a foreign Government can't take that from us?  Our Constitution gives quite a bit of power to the Head of State of a foreign government.

no. the ALP said they would try to buy them out in order to close them down, but there was a limit as to what they would pay for them .....

the power station refusal to sell out just means that they will die slowly for zero compensation rather then ending it quickly with some money in their pockets ...

many years ago the NSW Labor govt offered a friend of mine a price for his land.. they wanted it for roads...it was about half the going rate and he refused...they came back and upped the price nowhere near what he could have got but was again offered the usual take it or leave it..he never forgave the Labor party..

govt have all the power I mean who else is going to buy these almost obsolete.places???...

didnt gillard say..like she always seems to say no one will miss out..

you're rambling again. ... your example has absolutely no bearing on what we were talking about ... this was never going to be a compulsory buyout .. there are strict guidelines governing compulsory buyouts and I doubt this would meet those guidelines ... I think you'll find the companies are trying to force the govt. to pay ridiculous amounts, and they went to far .... the fact that they are almost obsolete is their problem not the governments.
