Title: Labor - flushing Australia down the sewer
Post by Shane B on Aug 15th, 2012 at 5:40pm
International companies have warned the Gillard government that they may scale back investment plans in Australia due to carbon pricing, surging labour costs, the high dollar and political uncertainty.

Leading executives of multinational corporations claim that Australia’s business-friendly reputation is at risk and parent companies could shift resources to Asian nations.

Thats actually what andrei was saying in his ugly profits-first way. Like it or not, some of labors industrial relations laws are prehistoric and actually wind back some of Keatings reforms.

It would be good to see a lot of WorkChoices back in place. Wont happen tho. Unlike labor, Libs tend to uphold their big-ticket election promises.

SYDNEY--Getting Australian consumers to feel good about anything is proving to be next to impossible, as a key measure of confidence issued Wednesday showed a sharp fall in August even as positive economic signs emerged.

The Westpac-Melbourne Institute index of consumer sentiment fell 2.5% in August from July, down to 96.6 points in seasonally adjusted terms from 99.1 points.

The weakening comes despite recent aggressive interest rate cuts, encouraging news on the future stability of Europe, hefty one-off payments to families by the government and an economy showing near full employment.

Australian economy leads the world
Jessica Wright
April 18, 2012 .

Australia has the strongest economy in the developed world and it is expected to outperform all comers for at least the next two years, according to the International Monetary Fund.

The IMF - which issued its World Economic Outlook in Washington overnight - said it expected the Australian economy to expand by 3 per cent this year as fiscal tensions from Europe and the United States continue to ease.

The body stated that after a major setback last year with the Eurozone crisis, the global prospect of far more stable financial conditions was gradually improving.

The update said that it expects the Australian economy will outstrip growth over all other advanced economies over the next two years, noting we live in a region where exposure to troubled European banks was less than for other parts of the world.

But it also warned that Australia was exposed to risk if economic conditions in the Middle East caused another oil price spike.

The organisation revised up its global growth forecasts, with the global economy expected to grow by 3.5 per cent in 2012, up from 3.3 per cent in the January update.

A forecast of global growth of 4.1 per cent in 2013 has also been revised up from 3.9 per cent.

Global growth continues to be underpinned by solid growth in Asia, the report said.

China's economy was expected to grow 8.2 per cent in 2012 and 8.8 per cent in 2013, while India was expected to grow 6.9 per cent in 2012 and 7.3 per cent in 2013. These forecasts were broadly unchanged from the IMF's January update.

The IMF also forecasts Australia's unemployment rate to remain low at 5.2 per cent in both 2012 and 2013.

"With solid growth, low unemployment, contained inflation, strong public finances and a record pipeline of business investment, the Australian economy is the standout performer of the developed world"

The government has hit out at Opposition leader Tony Abbott for ''getting it wrong'' on the IMF growth forecasts.

During a morning doorstop, Mr Abbott said the IMF report showed the local economy was ''underperforming'', as they had downgraded the economic growth forecast.

''It forecasts 3 per cent for the current financial year and it looks like we are going to get 2 per cent,'' Mr Abbott said.

''This is an underperforming economy and it's underperforming because of the poor economic management of the current government.''

But Mr Abbott's assertion was not correct, according to a spokesman for the Treasurer, who said the growth forecast of 3 per cent in 2012 had been the same since the start of the year.

We are doing ok mainly because Australians are now net savers unlike in Howards time when Australian households were crippled under a mountain of growing debt.
Aussies are far better off than they were under Howard because now we are living within our means and saving for what we buy.
Debt debt and more personal debt was the catch cry of the Howard years

Sorry, but Australia's household savings ratio was declining since the 1970s.

It started to rise in the early 2000s and has been rising since then - partly due to the mining boom.

The Nanny State.....

In WA the Liberal Government is planning stop and search laws that gives police the legal right to stop and search anyone regardless of weather or not they have committed a crime...Despite the fact current laws allow police the right to stop and search anyone if they have probable cause or a suspicion a crime has been committed however police are held accountable for their actions under current laws.....New laws cannot be challenged by the public and officers no longer will have to explain their actions!!!

The Howard Government introduced legislation that gives police the right to detain anyone for several weeks without charge or explanation and even if the person is innocent that have no way to appeal (ala Dr Mohammad Haneef)!!!

The NSW LNP are planning to introduce legislation that bans shooters after midnight and bans glasses from all Kings Cross venues!!!

The WA Liberal party are planning to introduce legislation that will allow police to shut down parties enter private properties without a search warrant and charge residents for any damaged caused even if the people who caused the damage where not invited guests!!!

The list of freedoms and knee jerk reactions from LNP Governments is astounding and you cretins complain about the packaging of cigarettes as some sort of invasion on freedom.....WTF???

now sadly the boot is on the other foot the police are maligned and I think we are lucky people still want to join the police force.,.they are almost the enemy...

we have allowed this to erode by the attitude of some magistrates and the laws in general..

kids know they cant be touched they flaunt it..how would you feel trying to stop old ladies from being mugged and bashed just to have the perp finger salute you because thats whats happening..

times have change people are taking potshots at coppers now.. they are unafraid these days.. you are just not told how many police a day go off on stress leave or injury leave we are not told.. but I can tell you you have far more police away from the job than come out of Goulburn academy

good on the cops if they can protect themselves anyway possible whilst they go about trying to keep the rest of us safe..

More warnings:

A landmark report by the research arm of McKinsey & Company warns that stalling productivity is a threat to Australia’s run of more than 20 years of economic growth and that it has been camouflaged by China’s voracious appetite for our coal and ore.

The report finds that labour productivity has been growing at a lacklustre 0.3 per cent a year since 2005, in stark contrast to the “golden age” of the 1990s when it was growing at 3.1 per cent… And the resources sector has been hit by higher costs and delays on mammoth projects.

To turn around productivity, the McKinsey Global Institute says, it is crucial to recommit to the microeconomic reforms that drove growth in the 1990s…

Would they be LABORs reforms that they are talking about?
You know the reforms that gave us 18% interest rates, the recession we had to have?

Or are you going to try & play this off as 2005 - they are wrong because Howard was still PM they meant 2007
And the reforms of the 90's were after 96

The current mining boom continues to exceed expectations
Tuesday, 31 July 2012

The value of Australia’s resource and energy exports in 2010-11 increased by 27 per cent from a year earlier to a record $175 billion.
The Bureau of Resources and Energy Economics estimates the value of our mineral and energy commodity exports will increase by a further 21 per cent to $215 billion in 2011-12 as a result of growth in the production of iron ore, liquefied natural gas, copper, crude oil, metallurgical coal and thermal coal.

Since the Government announced details of the Minerals Resource Rent Tax and its plans to put a price on carbon, resource companies have approved billions of dollars of new spending on coal, iron ore, petroleum and other resource projects.

New capital expenditure on minerals and energy projects in 2010-11 was the highest on record and nearly four times the average annual expenditure of the past 30 years.
There is over $430 billion worth of planned or committed investment in the pipeline.
This year national exploration expenditure for minerals and energy is estimated to increase to $6.3 billion, from $5.7 billion in the previous year.

The fact he stated a tax on carbon was the easiest & simplest way to go about the issue but now he is against that idea is a back flip to me but I'm sure you'll point the error of my thinking out.

Workplace relations laws brought in by the Labor Government of Australia have not played well I know that much.

The legislation now for Fair Work Australia where we have to hand a leaflet out for every employee who starts in our ANZ entity is a timebomb.

Handing out to employees which says -

"Employees have the right to take 12 months maternity leave, with an option of 12 months beyond that, also to return to work at a timeframe suitable to their personal circumstance"

"Employee work hours must be fair and reasonable to their personal lives and not extend beyond 38 hours"

"An employer cannot discriminate within a role because of an employee's personal circumstance which may prevent them from working the specific hours mentioned"

I could go on.

Seriously, Fair Work Australia - brought in by this Government - has done nothing for the view held in Head Office that Australia is a Socialist country.

It's bad for business and bad for the country.

Another own-goal.

Scrap Fair Work Australia and replace with a more business and growth friendly set of industrial relations laws.

Exactly. Only Labor would be capable of coming up with a sick joke of a tax where they take with one hand and give it back with the other hand. Bunch of neanderthals! As for FWA, it's only "fair" if you're in a Union or representing a Union.

Scrapping the carbon tax will not require retention of any amount of compensation, as the compensation is contingent upon there being a tax. This is a Coalition policy that will directly save taxpayers and will enhance Australia's attractiveness for foreign investment, which is currently being scared off under Labor.

The mining tax is also having a negative impact on both investment and jobs, with an announcement this week that a smelter in QLD will be closing earlier than scheduled due to the carbon tax. Scrapping this tax, which is Coalition policy, will make Australia more attractive to investors both here and abroad.

Labor has, since 2007, failed to stop the boats. It has, in fact, made the problem exponentially worse. Each week our Navy transfers the same number of people to Christmas Island that arrived during the entire 5 years of the Pacific Solution. Returning to the policies of the Pacific Solution after years of Labor incompetence on this issue is overdue and has taken the former CDF to get the government to act. This is another Coalition policy.

Okay, I've answered you pretty comprehensively. I await your nonsensical, unintelligent and fault-riddled reply.

Like I said smithy - you can scrap the carbon tax and not need to keep the compensation.

Why keep a compensation to compensate something no longer there?

Loads of us didn't get it anyway did we?

Hardly a big loss.

Totally scrap FWA and re-work industrial relations to be more fluid and competitive in nature.
You can sharpen the edges on a lot of the legislation around working hours and conditions.

1000's of Australians are now not paying any tax
All Australians are paying no tax on the 1st 18K of their income
Pensions have risen.

Which is all part of the compo package, now I see & understand the argument of no tax no compo needed, they problem both you & AP are either forgetting or deliberately ignoring is that Tony has stated all benefits will remain, he won't or is too gutless to take the money back.
Which of course begs the question were will it come from once the revenue stream which funds it disappears.

If I wanted Chinese Labor laws I'd move there.

If you are going to run your country based upon the tax rates of the low wage workers, you're heading for some pretty big and jagged rocks in that ship.

The tax laws have needed updating for a fair while.

GST should be 17.5%.
Top rate of tax should be 42%.
Middle rate should be 22-23%
And a tax free of about $15k.

You can make it work I assure you.

You cut social spending, foreign aid, welfare spending.
Remove baby bonus to all.
Put in more stringent benefit rules on unemployment and disability etc.

Australia needs a complete overhaul.

I am telling you what it should be.

Drop down tax free rate.
Increase GST.
Drop top rate of tax.
Streamline middle tier to one rate.

Cut welfare benefits, cut aid.

You favour big Government and socialism.
Not something I remotely can sign up.

Why you want such interference in people's lives from Government is beyond me.

Small Government, tax incentives, people have more of their own money to decide how to spend it - thats what I am about.

People will always spend their own money better than any Government will.

The biggest enemy of the Australian economy at this time is WAYNE SWAN.

He fails to realise that whenever he opens his mouth about the Australian economy, to crow about how well we are relative to Europe, it reminds mums and dads how fragile the world economy is.

This scares the hell out of people, which prompts them to hang tight to their cash and not spend.

It's bad for business and bad for the country.

Heaven forbid they rise above their serfdom to a point where they think their personal lives and family MAYBE more important than the bottomline of a multinational conglomerate.

If it so bad why not suggest pulling out, 22 million people is hardly a major city in the northern hemisphere, your bottom linr would hardly notice it ;)

Smithy, the problem is not so much what Andrei says but rather the imperious profit-at-all-costs approach. Some of what he says is quite fair but his manner would make most people disagree with everything he said just out of principle. Despite his 'hate everything australian but love everything his mother and margaret thatcher says' approach, the  ALP have set back industrial relations 20 years as a reward for the union support. Now it's time to take back that 20 years.

Are you serious?
If Wayne just shuts up the mums and dads of OZ will suddenly forget global economic factors and go out and smash that credit card and re mortgage the equity in their home like its 2004 again.

The really sad thing is thats exactly what Tony and Shrek think will happen, WANT to happen.

With the way Wayne Swan is digging this country deeper into debt, I very much doubt that would be the case. They know the money will have to be paid back soon (more than likely by a Coalition govt, yet again) and so they're saving up their money as much as they can.

This was discussed with Shane a week or so ago.

Until told otherwise we are on target for a 1 bill surplus in 11 odd months.

Now yes I find this implausible, but having said that even 30 to 50% repayment of the 238 bill debt would be impressive considering we are talking 87 to 120 bill paid back in such a short time frame.

As was pointed out it took Costello 10 years with sales of assets to cover 96 bill.

Gillard defends govt economic policy
August 15, 20123:33PM

PRIME Minister Julia Gillard has defended her government's economic performance after a survey revealed a decline in international confidence in Australian business.

Ms Gillard used question time on Wednesday to beat down suggestions international investment in Australia was under threat because of political uncertainty and rising costs.

"We are seeing a huge investment pipeline into our country and there is more to come," she told parliament on Wednesday.

A survey of 111 firms, undertaken by CEO Forum Group, found 41 per cent of international companies surveyed were less likely to invest in Australia than they were 12 to 18 months ago.

About 60 per cent of executives said political uncertainty had worsened in that time.

"The source of that uncertainty is the opposition's plans to rip up every economic reform in this country that is contributing to our prosperity," Ms Gillard said.

The prime minister said her government had performed well economically despite difficulties during the global financial crisis.

She said $919 billion had been spent on private business investment since 2007.

New private business investment is growing at the fastest rate in a decade, while business investment as a percentage of the nation's gross domestic product had reached its highest level in 40 years during the March quarter, she said.

"And we expect it to rise further this financial year and next financial year."

Yes in fact, that investment Gillard is referring to is primarily in mining and is locked in.

The survey was referring to investment intentions.

Not anymore, thanks in part to Gillard and Bowen and their incompetent handling of border security! Besides, with so many things left out of the budget in terms of expenditure (eg NBN), the surplus only existed in Swan's wet dreams.

Australia's workplace relations legislation (FWA) changes and updated have not been well-received by the international arms of the multi-nationals.

Seriously - some of the hoops we have to jump through for Australia and New Zealand in regards to headcount management makes us shake our heads.

It does you no favors in regards to responsiveness and speed of market reaction.

If I hear one more time from local HR "Yeah but we can't do that in Australia, it's against the Fair Work Australia Act..."
