I think they're afraid that people may be realising that they were squeezing the python, not the other way around.

Because the opinion polling has not remotely moved on Labor and they have zero chance of retrieving the next election.

He's literally won the next election already so his work is pretty much done.

The media are also half doing his job for him too.

Gillard is a lame dead duck PM now and Labor have to decide whether the opinion polls are that bad that they ditch her before the next election - which has its pluses and minuses.

Put simply, Abbott doesn't need to say anymore on the subject.
The people dont like the tax, the media don't like the tax and the Labor Government are dead in the water already.

How bad have the polls been for Labor now?
This is pushing into its 3rd year of 30% levels....

Then add in the fact that the public are also very negative of Labor's inability to stop asylum boats coming to Australia and seem incapable of putting together a coherent policy.

People want leadership.

What was her latest idea?
We'll set up a committee.

In my company that is Grade A buck passing.

Hence why, Abbott is pretty much set already.

By any yardstick, this has been a terrible Government lacking in leadership and the polling reflects people's views of this.

"Boat people" has traditionally been the place the liberals go to when they have nothing else to complain about.

I suspect that is the case here. The Thompson case is old news. Slipper case is backfiring, and the carbon tax is undetectable in the public.

"Boat people" is their guaranteed fall back position.  Whenever boat people are the news, you know the liberals have run out of stuff.

My question is, if Abbott cant get any mileage now out of the carbon tax, will he ever in the future ?
Is he scared it has exposed him as a liar ?

So what if it is?

It's doing the job isn't it?

The carbon tax argument is done. People have a negative opinion about it and its not going to change anytime soon.
Boat people is Labor's achilles heel.
They are leaderless on the issue and its got great political mileage too.

Hence why, Abbott is making noises on that.

You can't say he's not done a good job. His primary polling is 48% and Labor is stuck down in the low 30s still.

He has been an excellent opposition leader - the Government have gone from crisis to crisis since the election and polled the lowest polls in history.

The carbon tax and boat people will win him the election.

For my mind, he has done his job very very well in that respect.

Gillard on the other hand, is having an absolutely shocking time. She can't get policies right on boat people and she can't connect with the people on the carbon tax.

Just wait till those utility bills start rolling in.

There's plenty of mileage left in the carbon tax for Mr Abbott.

Depends what you think his job is.

He is deliberately (along with the greens) blocking the most effective policy for reducing boats (ie send them back on a plane no questions asked), because its politically expedient for him to maximize boats and maximize deaths.

Opposition leader Tony Abbott will have difficulty repealing the carbon tax
July 02, 2012

INDEPENDENT MP Andrew Wilkie says it will become increasingly difficult for Tony Abbott to abolish the carbon tax as Australians get used to it.

It comes as a group of big businesses publicly declared their support for the controversial tax.

Mr Wilkie says the coalition is not a certainty to win the next federal election but, if it does, it will face a battle to deliver on its promise to repeal the controversial tax.

''If the coalition win the election, and that's not a certainty, (it depends) whether or not they control the Senate,'' Mr Wilkie told reporters in Hobart.

''I think (it's) a bit like the GST - highly controversial but, once people have realised the sky hasn't fallen in, they see the sense in the reform, they live with it a while, I think it becomes increasingly difficult for Tony Abbott to unwind it in the future.''

Mr Wilkie supported the carbon price and says many in his Tasmanian electorate of Denison, where he is riding high in a number of polls, are behind him.

On the first business day of the carbon tax, a a consortium of almost 300 big businesses, including Westpac, AGL, Unilever and GE, have signed a joint statement backing the tax and accused the coalition of creating uncertainty by promising to scrap it in government.

And it will NEVER pass the Senate
( ... a new upper house doesn't sit until almost a year after being elected)

How's THIS for election policy ?

STOP charging the country's BIGGEST polluters for the privilege
CUT aged, disabled and carers pensions
INCREASE income tax to the nation's poorest

... all the while trying to convince the electorate that all these "massive" price increases, on every consumable, will miraculously fall in the same week ?

if you wanted a genuinely representative opinion of the electorate of Denison you wouldnt quote the candidate who finished THIRD and who seems to be almost without a spine in his dealings with Gillard. She has shafted him twice and he still worships at her feet.

Not only that, but look at the spate of companies trying to rort the tax through increasing their prices. Just about every ALP policy that involves money gets rorted. One has to look no further than the BER, pink batts or set-top boxes. If Labor ran a company the way it runs this country, it'd have gone bankrupt ages ago or its shareholders would've staged a revolt.

Andrew Wilkie way ahead in local polling
June 29, 201212:00AM

BALANCE-OF-POWER independent Andrew Wilkie would easily win his Hobart seat if an election were held now, as he is the first choice of 40 per cent of his constituents.

The most comprehensive poll yet of his electorate of Denison, provided exclusively to The Australian yesterday, is larger than previous polls and, unlike some, clearly named him in the question, rather than referring only to "independents" or "others".

http://www.theaustralian.com.au/national-affairs/andrew-wilkie-way-ahead-in-local-polling/story-fn59niix-1226411574688

In conjunction with The Australian, ReachTEL conducted a four-question survey of 644 residents in the Tasmanian Federal electorate of Denison on the night of the 27th June 2012. The results showed that Andrew Wilkie is well clear having doubled his primary vote since the 2010 Federal Election. In the same period, Labor has halved their primary vote thus avoiding the three-way race that occured at the election.

Key findings:
•Andrew Wilkie is well clear with 40% of the primary vote thus avoiding the three-way race that occurred in 2010.
•Since the Federal Election in 2010, Labor’s primary vote has halved while Andrew Wilkie’s vote has nearly doubled.
•Nearly two-thirds of the electorate prefer Julia Gillard as Prime Minister over Tony Abbott.

His seat must be ( ... close to) the safest in Australia

The carbon tax is old news, now. Abbott has done his job. We don't want the carbon tax, we hate the carbon tax, and most of all, we hate being lied to. Labor is not the same party that I voted for in 1993 and 1998. They're not getting back my vote until they get rid of the rabble there now, and start all over again.

With you on that 100%. If labor vote with liberals to get rid of the carbon tax, I will start to consider them again to some degree. Dont know what that degree is yet as I am not in the position to consider them at all. Get rid of the carbon tax labor.

No, the opposite to who the tax is suppose to help. Instead of helping Australians stand on their own, the carbon tax does the opposite and hurts Australia especially in terms to being the opposite of a tarriff. A tarriff helps Australians exports, hurts imports, a carbon tax helps imports, hurts exports.

Hows Jail ?

I have - healthcare, services and I dont need welfare.

Tell me again why in Australia I should be penalised for not having private healthcare but expect my taxes to go to paying for free healthcare for someone who pays in nothing?

The old something-for-nothing mindset again?

I don't think so but yesterday he did say that it was the opposite of a tax.

Opposite of a tarriff. A tarriff helps us Australians. The carbon tax is the opposite to a tarriff, it hurts us while helping the importers and hurting exporters.

The carbon tax is the opposite of anything good for Australia.

Opposite of a tarriff

A tarrif is a tax, The opposite of a tax.

And you had a levy as well didn't you?

Taxes, tariffs, levies.

Remind me again why my take-home pay in the United States is so much higher than a guy earning the same as me in Australia??

Oh yeah - socialism.....

You are probably paying more for health care than I do.

I should have added:

We have: Health care.  Services.  Welfare.
You have:  Poverty, crime, crippling government debt.

Taxes, tariffs, levies.

It askes the question about the fixed carbon price.

Tnoy describes it as the opposite of a Tarriff so its not one of those, its also not a Levy or a TAX - nobody ever pays one cent of tax. So can anyone tell me why is it a tax?

Anyone know why ?

He's "rolling back" his "repeal"
He doesn't NEED it
The 2013 Federal Election is HIS - in the bag

( ... note the word "problematic" creeping into the debate)

She has shafted him twice and he still worships at her feet.

he will not be missed.

His seat must be ( ... close to) the safest in Australia

well I grant that is somewhat of a surprise but it changes nothing. it was never going to be a coalition seat and it is just one more labor seat that will not eventuate. of course, once wilkie has no power whatsoever to get bribe money from the PM his popularity will evaporate.

its called the opposite of 'screw those in trouble'. One day you may become unemployed or injured etc. you may even want a new kidney. And guess what you will do? fly baclk here so you can get it done fo $1000 instead of selling your house to pay the $200,000 for a kidney transplant even WITH insurance.

a friend of mine suffered a truamatic brain injury days after his 40th bday. Intensive care cost $350,000. IN america it would have cost $5M and since he didnt have that kind of money he woudl be dead.  THATS why we have a shared responsibility here. Because one day we might need it.
