Pathetic,
Is he an elected official? Is that what elected officials are paid? Its like me complaining about that useless unit Mirrabella getting paid that much. |

The question should be should any MP who fails to represent their electorate with distinction worthy of a salary of X.
So, if I had to list a couple each way. Oakeshott, Windsor, Katter - Yes. Thompson - No. I dont have to like Oakeshott, but I respect the man because he is at least up front and honest, and represents his electorate with distinction and gusto. Thompson has mere disgraced his own. |

Oakeshott certainly does no such thing. He supports Labor and the Greens, when he lives in one of the most conservative electorates in the country.
Now I don't support what any Polly earns, but the reason I single out Thomson is because it has Ben well noted that he is never present in his community. Why does he get payed for doing that? |

With the savings that could be made, I'd take the role on for $191,000.00. I'd even drive myself there to do it, its only 3 to 4 hours to Canberra up the Hume for me. I know it would be tough, but I think Im of strong enough conviction to be master and lord ruler. It would be nice to make them my bitch for a change. |

He either supports or doesnt support each bill on its merits, and these matters he has been upfront BEFORE the election on them. Unlike the ALP, Greens and Coalition Oakeshott is one of the few men with intelligence, because he makes up his mind AFTER hearing the case. Anyone who makes up their mind before hearing the facts and votes purely on a party line is a fool |

Oakeshott has intelligence? I stopped reading there...
And no, I am not committed to either side, as I've said before. Oakeshott is a dimwit with no career outside of politics. I wonder what he'll do when he's voted out? He won't even get a pension, hasn't been there long enough. |

now if the question is do MP's deserve such exorbitant pays, well that's a different topic |

"represent' implies represneting their views and wishes. By that measurement, Oakeshott has done the reverse. Oakeshott has represented nothing more then his OWN views to the opposition of his electorates stated views. Same applies to Windsor. Katter might be insane - but they knew that going in to the election and he has remained true to what he promised. |

That is crap, before the election both men at community forums went to them with an ETS and NBN as a major platform, and they were still elected. Suck it up mate, both electorates got EXACTLY what they voted for. |

Slow news day eh? I guess you righties can't find another boat that you can clamour to have machine gunned or someone to die on TV to give you a good belly laugh.
Meanwhile, day 4 and we still have power. It's a miracle! Maybe Abbott was praying for me? Tim Tams are completely gone though. May need to venture out to see if I can scavenge some before our energies completely run out. Damn this python strike! Or death squeeze. Or whatever it is. |

He took an ETS and NBN to his electorate BEFORE the last election and they voted for him. Abbott is anti ETS and anti NBN. Abbott hung himself mate. As for the mining tax, hook in, I have little sympathy for companies who make billions. The mining tax, the brain child of Ken Henry, is good policy in its original form and not this watered down bastardised version. |

I don't know why this turned to Oakeshott, but now that it has, could someone tell me of any job that he's ever held out of politics? As much as I don't like Gillard and About, at least they had jobs before going into politics in their mid to late 30s.

what about supporting labor over liberal? this is an electorate where labor got 8% only. after the election both electorates were polled as to who should be govt and they supported the other side. The most fundamental representation is in choosing a govt adn they failed miersably by choosing the other side. Why do you think Oakeshott is facing a 35% swing AGAINST him? and Windsor is nearly as large. You cant pick and choose what you represent. You either represent your elctorate or not. Oakeshott is going to get hammered for his choices - as he should. But like another poster you lost me the moment you said he was intelligent. That is certainly one thing he is NOT. you like the mining tax, Oakeshott likes the mining tax. That is not how you define either intelligent or being a good representative. Unless you are in his electorate (and you arent) then YOUR view means nothing. |

some would say having a position that cannot be bought is called ETHICAL. Gillard was prepared to negotiate ANYTHING for power. If the greens had demanded gay marriage for Bandts vote, we would now have gay marriage. If oakeshott had demanded a tax summit every week we would ahve one. at least we only had the one - which was a 100% waste of time. why dont you try deciding if he is a good representative by a higher standard than aggreeing with you? |

Respect what? in the BIGGEST decision he chose to ignore the whopping majority opinion of his electorate. He chose to support Labor over Coalition. how do you defend that? Why dont you demand that every MP in the house have a concsience vote over the carbon tax? it wil be defeated. What about the mining tax? also probably defeated. You cant claim he is ethical and a great representative because he votes on two issues the way you like while rejecting his MISrepresentation of the major issue. That is just nonsense. But really, calling him INTELLIGENT?? He is widely regard as a bozo by BOTH sides and if you've ever heard him tallk on and on and on... you'd call him a bozo too. |

Of course he does. If you ask me, pollies are well underpayed. They work very long hours, and are payed a pittamce to several other, less gruelling jobs in the country. On the issue of Rob Oakeshott, what a good man. He put the interests. Of the nation above his own personal interests. The people of Lyne have qn obligation to vote him in next election again. I have heard that news is grim for him Windsor, Smith, Swan and Rudd, but these voters all have a duty to reelevt these men.

Why should Ministers like Smith, Emerson, Swan and former PMs like Rudd lose their seats, when they have represented us so well over the last two terms of governments. My ex-wife lives in Griffith, and says she,s longing to vote out Rudd. Disgusting and unappreciative, that's all it is. Oakeshott has represented our nation well, as has Windsor. They put the interests of the country over their own interests. Why should they be punished for that? |

Of course it's not about her. I am just using an example to illustrate the point. Rudd and Swan have been great, and they don't deserve to lose their seats. Ministers shouls not be losing their seats. In the state election, the QLD people owed it to andrew Fraser to re-elect him, as he was wantes by the party to become leader, but instead turfed him out. |
