Not much, except that "ethnicity" is a more valid term. The term "race" is not regarded as a useful classification system.

Effectively, people who are grouped together on the basis of one or two genetic traits would have to be grouped very differently for other traits.

Maybe. It includes several ethnic groups. However not everyone in the ethnic groups are jewish. Why do they need 2 definitions anyway? They are a religion. And the ones in israel are israelites. And i give it maybe 3 hours and someone will call it a race again.

It would be if Catholics only intermarried amongst themselves (in a relatively small grouping) for long enough...

Take the Amish as an example......they share enough common heritage, culture, language and religion to qualify as a distinct ethnic group.

However not everyone in the ethnic groups are jewish. Why do they need 2 definitions anyway? They are a religion. And the ones in israel are israelites. And i give it maybe 3 hours and someone will call it a race again. Ahhh but that's my point...almost the population of the jewish religion shares enough common DNA to qualify as an ethnic group... The ones in Israel (from families that have lived there continuously) share significant DNA markers with people of the same religion, from European families... Which isn't all that unusual incidently......Italians are a recognised ethnic group, and 87% are Catholic... That makes them israelis. Or some semitic label. Judaism is their religion not a race.
