Scores of guns stolen from NSW homes

There are calls for stricter controls on weapons in homes after a wave of gun thefts across New South Wales.
In just over a fortnight, at least 50 guns and thousands of rounds of ammunition have been stolen from registered gun owners across the state.

All firearms used by permit holders in the state must be registered with the Commissioner of Police, but police insist the information is secure.

The Commander of the Firearms and Organised Crime Squad, Ken Finch, says there is no evidence the registry has been compromised.

"I'm quite confident that the processes and systems that are in place at the firearms registry are robust and their audit systems are transparent," he said.

The Greens' David Shoebridge is calling for urgent laws to limit the number of weapons people can own.
"While there are private arsenals around New South Wales, criminals will target that," he said.

"The average number of guns per licence owner is now five. That's a honey pot that criminals are targeting."
The Opposition leader John Robertson says the thefts are fuelling Sydney's wave of shootings.

"While we continue to see illegal firearms on the streets and our police numbers down, people in western and south-western Sydney are being failed by this Government," he said.

The state's Police Minister is holding talks with the Federal Government and counterparts across the country to try to nationalise gun laws.

Cars are parked where they can be seen. Guns are kept locked up in a safe (or they are supposed to be) the only way to know who has them is to know who has them somehow.

Uhhh. Okay then. You are right sorry. Nobody knew where the guns were they just guessed which ppl to watch and watched until they took a gun out. 50 times. Pretty good guessing.

Sorry swag but that is a police job for sure

My father is a licenced shooter and owns about 5 or 6 hand guns, by law he has to use each gun a curtain number of times a year or he will not be allowed to keep them. Police have access to the firearm registry as they have to do inspections on firearm storage, and if you are caught with a gun not in the safe when police turn up for inspection one puts them self at risk of police confiscating all your firearms. The Big problem in NSW is the high number of Arabs. Most Licenced Arab shooters do not join the gun clubs to participate in club activities. in fact most just show up for minimum shoots just so they can own a gun licence that enables them to provide relatives who own illegal firearms ammunition.

It's no different to people having any valuables, jewelry, coin collections, art, memorabilia,  stolen from a safe or a lock up in the house.

It's no guess.  Gun owners aren't secret societies.  People talk at pubs, they go to gun clubs, sports shooting contests, etc etc.

Crims that want to steal guns will simply do their home work and case places that shooters go.
