The Queen has awarded former prime minister John Howard the prestigious Order of Merit at a ceremony at Buckingham Palace.

Janette Howard and the couple's youngest son Richard were at the palace to witness the ceremony.

"I am touched by the personal compliment, but I also see it very much as a mark of the Queen's great affection and esteem for Australia," Mr Howard said.

The Order of Merit is limited to just 24 living recipients, including distinguished scientists, writers, musicians and artists.

On Sunday the Howards will board one of the 1,000 boats in the jubilee flotilla which will sail down the Thames to celebrate the Queen's 60 years on the throne.

The award bestowed upon former PM John Howard today by the Queen is a very exclusive one indeed. There can be only 24 living recipients at any one time and each recipient is hand-picked by Her Majesty. That doesn't sound to me like an award handed out willy-nilly. He was one of the best PM's ever to grace the halls of Parliament House and one of the most successful and longest serving as well. Labor just has a string of failures - Whitlam, Hawke, Keating, Rudd and now Gillard. I can't seem any of them being given any awards by the Queen or President of the United States in the near or distant future!

Queen Elizabeth isn't a "foreign monarch". She is our Head of State. Granted, not to the extent that she was 50 years ago. I think it is entirely appropriate that, while we are still a constitutional monarchy, Australians may receive awards from Her Majesty. How is it any different from Howard's Presidential Medal of Freedom? We are not America's 51st state, are we?

like I said, she rewarded Howard for sabotaging the referendum on a republic ... not sure why you think its so important .. i think being voted by your peers as the best in the world is a much better reward ... (worlds best treasurer) . Some old biddy dishing out medals means sweat FA to most people these days. Although it might have some resale value down the track ...

Well Gough Whitlam did receive the Royal boot up the Jacksie and told to be on his way in 1975.

The same way that you proudly claim and acknowledge your heritage - Howard is doing the same thing. He's claiming and acknowledging Australia's heritage.

Australia whether people like it or not, is a proud British heritage country.

A unique country if you like.

A western democracy surrounded by Asian nations.

Now obviously with the influx in recent times of Asians, Wogs, even Africans - but also other Europeans not British like the Irish - there will be a dilution of views on our monarchy but the heritage remains the same, and the system is proved to work.
