Newman is closing down an agency designed to help the public navigate their workplace rights.

Was this demanded from Clive Palmer?

Office of Workplace Rights was just an ALP state government-funded Union body in reality. What a waste of taxpayer funds that was!

Doesnt look like he did much damage but we will see. The climate change one and the workplace rights one will prolly have to be restarted or delegated somewhere else @ some point.

Great stuff, 'can do.'

Next stop, the Humanities departments and other trendy academic departments.

Most federal and state public service departments across the country could be closed or slashed without to many issues so I have no problem with Queensland or any other state getting rid of waste. It is taxpayers money after all and every cent should be spent wisely.

We have Fairwork for a reason, no need for state duplication on workplace relations.

Good call.

At 50 workers on public service wages, thats $2.5m plus back in the state coffers.

The Office of Climate Change, headed by former premier Anna Bligh's bureaucrat husband Greg Withers, was created by the previous government in 2007 to oversee climate policy and programs.

Well. Now he got rid of those departments what to do with the money? Oh I know something frivolous!

The Queensland Government plans a $2 billion master plan to revamp the government office precinct in Brisbane's CBD.

The existing Executive Building on George Street is to be demolished or sold and other buildings will also be sold.

The State Government is about to advertise for a private partner to deliver the project, which is expected to create over 18,000 jobs.

Premier Campbell Newman says the review of government buildings is long overdue.

"To allow us to rationalise a whole lot of CBD property that the State Government has and to also put public servants into proper, decent office accommodation," he said.

"Frankly many of them are working in rundown, cramped space that hasn't seen a refit for over 20 to 30 years."

Mr Newman says the $2 billion project will be built and funded by the private sector.

"That will allow the Government to move in on long-term leases and allow us to rationalise and sell-off some of the office stock we currently have, or have it refurbished, and then put onto the market," he said.

Leasing is fine, for a business without the capital to buy, and which can claim the lease payments as a full write off against tax, but for a government to sell it's buildings, then lease back space, is insanely bad economic sense.
My brothers law firm had been leasing offices in the cbd of melbourne and sydney for many, many decades, and when he became senior partner he looked at the figures, and bought a few floors in new buildings around the corner from the courts.
It has saved the company millions, and they have to pay taxes so I just do not see how they can justify this sort of short term thinking.

As opposed to the 'free' building they would just acquire out of thin air.

It is normal practice for business and governments to rent office space from Op Ex instead of buying buildings out of Cap Ex.

No massive expenditure (taxpayer funds) up front, allowing funds to be better utilised elsewhere.

No maintenance costs

Remember every day we don't have the bligh labor government in power is a beautiful day for all Queenslanders

But to commission a private company to build and pay for building a privately owned building (2bil) just so the govt can lease it @ some phenomenal rate? Comon theres a scam in there somewhere. Why the heck would the private company do that anyway?

The scam is that Queenslanders don't have to fork out $2 bil for a building that the government can just rent once it is finished.

It seems dastardly to some people but it is pretty standard these days.

Many governments rent office space from private companies, I don't really understand the conspiracy theory here.

BTW you people seem to like to use highly emotive words like astronomical and phenomenal, do you know what rent they will be paying in comparison to the normal rents paid for office space in brisbane?

Try and keep the hysterical language to a minimum if we could.

Way to not get it.

IF you were an 80 year old, and thought, blow it, I am not gonna live forever, I will sell my home, and spend the proceeds, renting some beautiful new apartment, and live like a king til I die, I would say, good move.
If you were 22, just married, and having your first kid, and had inherited a house, and said the same, I would say you are a freakin moron, because the money will run out in ten years, and you will be far worse off, and with NO assets.
