Title: First Commercial Space Cargo flight . Post by muso on May 27th, 2012 at 6:57am
Good to see the Dragon X safely docked on the International Space Station. A first for private business.
You may recall the first Dragon-X test flight a few years ago, which resulted in some "UFO" reports over Australia due to the unusual spiral effect of the final stage degassing. http://www.space.com/15885-spacex-dragon-capsule-station-astronauts.html There is quite a bright pass for the ISS on Thursday May 31. It should be as bright as Venus. If you're in Sydney, start looking at 6:30pm in the South South West. If you can see any stars, you won't miss it. In Melbourne, it will be closer to the South and will be even Brighter (mag -3.2). For Brisbane, that pass is too low on the horizon. Try the 2nd June at 6:20-6:23pm. That's almost overhead, stating in the SW and finishing to the East. For Adelaide, try the 1st June at 5:46pm until 5:49pm, about 30 minutes after sunset. That's a great overhead pass. For Perth, try the 1st June at 6:43-6:49pm. Look SW to SE. You can track the ISS or any other visible satellites yourself. Just Google Online satellite tracking. They probably paid them more too. I see they have a few jobs on offer: http://www.spacex.com/careers.php I see they have a vacancy for an EH &S Engineer. I wonder how much they pay ? ;D |

Sweet Zombie Jesus, how I hate all the BS hype SPace-X likes to heap on themselves. They're no more a pioneer of "commercial" space flight then any other aerospace contractor that's build rockets and spacecraft for NASA. NASA is still laying down design requirements, NASA still owns and operates the launch facility, and NASA is still performing all aspects of operations from final assembly to launch to docking to re-entry to recovery. All All Space-X did was bring in a lower design bid for a contract then other companies offered, that's all.

That's competition, lower and lower price. One day you may afford a space trip. Everything starts from the very first step, no one expects a company can do everything at this stage instead of NASA, otherwise it's too naive. I guess 30 years ago, first commercial Internet company may only sent several characters per seconds over a phone line as well. But it didn't stop Internet to get this big today. |
