I ride past churches very often that are far from dead, and according to all the people there, far from boring.

Christain denominations in general are waning, and I put the main cause as them selling out their principles in a vain attempt to win over the haters.
Show a bit of backbone - the haters will hate no matter what.  Appeasement just makes you look soft, and emboldens your enemies.

Certainly attendances are down on what they were, say fifty or more years ago, but this does not mean that the Christian church is dead.  There are a number of factors at play here.

With immigration from countries that are predominantly non-Christian, the proportion of Christan believers (as opposed to those who were baptised in a Christian church but do not follow the religion) is less than it was in years gone by.  There has been a rise in agnosticism and atheism, as these viewpoints are now considered respectable and mainstream.  There is no longer an attitude that it was a right and proper thing to go to church on Sunday for appearances sake only.

There may be less people attending Christian churches now, but the churches are actually stronger as a result, as the members of their congregations are now (mostly) committed believers.  At the last mass I was at (I have to admit I don't go every week - it was three or four weeks ago) the church was about half full (or half empty if you prefer) but that was a weekday evening - on Sundays there are considerably more there.  I have seen occasions (usually at special times such as Christmas or Easter) when there is standing room only.

attendances may be down in the west but everywhere else - including china - the church is booming. Chinas church is getting close to 100m. not exactly 'dead'.

Yeah. They arent dead. In UK they are getting quieter though (as it should be) and minding their own business. Here they arent too bad I guess as a generality.

One day they will be gone. Hopefully.
