There are a number of issues that dictate the optimum voltage and whether to use AC or DC. It is not a simple matter or a one size fits all response. CSIRO has analysed our electricity grid, done the maths, and figured out the best options. These are being used to guide new infrastructure choices.

Voltage: >0 to infinity
Frequency: 0 to infinity
Phase: 1 to infinity wires (this one is constrained to integers)

And these are just the 'conventional' options.
