Title: Tell China, they're dreamin' Post by BigOl64 on May 16th, 2012 at 8:34am I think China has a somewhat over inflated opinion of itself. In good times and in bad we always stick with those we can trust and those that have put in the hard yards with us in the past. By all means buy our resources and fill our $2 shops with cheap trinkets, but when it comes to security, we'll stick with the US. AUSTRALIA cannot juggle its relationships with the United States and China indefinitely and must choose a ''godfather'' to protect it, according to a prominent Chinese defence strategist. The warning by Song Xiaojun, a former senior officer of the People's Liberation Army, comes after Foreign Minister Bob Carr was told by his Chinese counterpart that Australia's close military alliance with the US was a throwback to the Cold War era. http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/world/chinese-official-its-us-or-america-20120515-1yp5f.html#ixzz1uyqfWphl |

Not in the least bit surprised. Pity the Tibetans don't share your view on living under a chinese communist dictatorship as being the preferred option. |

While both countries killed many of the occupants and none asked to be invaded only one country tends to leave after a while. When china invade your country they will stay and make your previous life extinct. BTW, it's not the Tibetans who are getting wealthy it's the chinese through exploitation. |

Not totally true. China invades your country and stay if they think they own you (think Tibet, Taiwan and islands in South China Sea). They're stuck with 19th century colonial attitudes and still think of an empire. The other time they invade you is if they think they can effect regime change and if for political reasons they like the idea, which isn't much different from what Western powers have done over the ages. A frequent claim made by Mainland Chinese is that they've never invaded a country they didn't own. That isn't true. They invaded Vietnam during the Ming Dynasty to help the Tran dynasty re-establish itself on the throne. Yeah ......... regime change. For some reason they didn't like the Ho dynasty. It sounds like the war in Iraq. A few weeks ago there was a movie on the SBS channel (don't know if you have that in Queensland) about Vietnamese boat people trying to escape the Communist regime after the Vietnam War. It was called "Journey from the Fall" (2006). A major theme in the movie was a legend about Le Loi, the leader of Vietnamese resistance forces against the Ming Dynasty. He was given a magical sword by some mythical figure and had to return it after he had defeated the Chinese. According to one of the main characters in the movie, Le Loi didn't return the sword, so there was no peace. Historically, Le Loi's dynasty went on for several generations. I thought wow, Vietnam defeated two superpowers of two different eras. The Ming Dynasty didn't succeed in taking over Vietnam and the Americans failed to defeat the Communists. The legend itself might have been trying to draw parallels between the two wars, as well as the journey the refugees took in escaping the Communist regime. |

A very lucid and valid comment, right up until you made that purile remark about Queensland and basically wiped out any respect your post generated. Very stupid indeed. If you have a valid point, just make it, don't try and use all your work just to denigrate others. |

I don't know where you get the idea I was "denigrating others" from my comment about Queensland. "Denigration of others" is what I see you doing more often on these forums, so basically your response here doesn't deserve any respect. Your hostility was unprovoked. You have to be paranoid to assume every time someone mentions Queensland it's an insult. Your post here is far more denigrating than anything I said about Queensland and what I think is "stupid" is when someone instinctively and impulsively belittles others, becomes irrationally hostile even when unprovoked and acts like everyone who crosses him is "beneath him." Whatever I said about Queensland was relatively mild (wasn't even a statement, just said if you had SBS you'd have been able to see it) and your response was simply inappropriate. It never went far enough to call for such a hostile, over-reactive response from you. Look at yourself in the mirror. Why don't you start making valid points without "denigrating" others? |

Asking if the state of Queensland had SBS, yeah nothing in that at all. >:( If you think that calling an action (not you personally I might add) 'stupid' is a hostile over reaction then you need to get out more and interact with people other than your parents. |

I just don't assume every state has the same TV channels, or even if they did, that they'd be airing exactly the same programs in the same time slots -- that there'd be some variation. I don't even assume Sydney has exactly the same programs. For example, you'd have different weather reports and you wouldn't be interested in a South Australian election campaign. BigOl64 wrote on May 17th, 2012 at 9:20am:
Just because you talk about something associated with a person, doesn't mean it can't be an attack on that person. If your boss consistently calls your business or design ideas "stupid," it might as well be an attack on you personally. If repeated often enough, I'd say your boss has to be arrogant or abusive to be speaking of you or your work in that way. You'd eventually feel worthless after being put-down so many times. If it's really ok to be saying nasty things about a "thing" that isn't a person, then I can say anything I like about Queensland because Queensland is not a person. It's an idea. It's a perimeter marking the boundaries of a piece of land. I actually didn't say anything nasty about Queensland, but even if I did, your response would be a "hostile over-reaction" by your own reasoning. >:( |

Yeah because what is it that the US did to the native Americans? They left the native Hawaians and Alaaskans to follow their own way of life? What are they doing with Puerto Rico? It only took the half a century and a Japanese invasion for the US to finally leave the Philippines. The US nuked Japan, forced them to change their religion, and still has bases their nearly 70 years later. Bases in Germany, South Korea, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, etc. are more than half a century old. The US will leave after they have contaminated your country with their uranium-depleted bombs, and left land mines and cluster bombs to keep prosthetic limb producers in business for generations. |

The US and China are like 2 bullies duking it out, and Australia is like some pathetic schoolyard geek trying to work out who it is better to suck up to. If Australia was smart, it would stay out of other people's fights. Australia's history in this regard is not very smart, always ready to fight in other people's battles in some delusional belief that they will one day reward us for our stupidity. |
